15. Danger

I gathered all my strength and kicked him in the groin. Then, while he bent over, screaming and swearing, I ran. I opened the door and started climbing up the stairs as I heard him behind me catching up. He grabbed me by my leg and pulled me down. I fell down on my face right on the staircase. Oh, that hurt. I felt liquid running down my jaw. He was pulling me towards him. I should not let him get me. I was face down on the stairs, and he crawled on top of me and held on to me. I gathered all my strength and hit him with my elbow. He tried to grab it, but I kept hitting him as hard as I could. “b***h, how dare you!” he screamed. He grabbed me by the hair, but somehow, I managed to elbow him again and then, with all my strength, kicked him with my foot and pulled myself off the staircase, continuing running up the stairs. I opened the door to the hallway, hearing the steps behind me. And faced Mr. Jules and Dr. Arthur chatting. Then Seth ran out behind me and paused in his tracks, seeing his father staring right at him. Seth’s face started to swell up. I must have got him in the eye as the left one was half-closed. “Would you care to explain what happened, Seth?" Ms. Jules asked with a voice that sent shivers down my spine. I was trying to think about how and what the chances were of making it out of this situation alive, preferably not caged. “Did you try to assault the pet slave and, worst of all, let her get out and hit you? So you failed yet again?” Mr. Jules asked. “If you do anything, you have to do it well!” “I was not attacking anyone. It was an accident,” Seth replied. “We’ll see about that,” his father was angry. He pressed his watch and asked me, “Did Seth attack you? You can tell me the truth.” My voice was back. I cleared my throat for the first time in a while. “I went up the stairs, fell, and accidentally knocked Seth down. I got scared that I would be punished and ran,” I lied. I figured if I told the truth, I would be back in a cage for attacking Master’s family. Mr. Jules looked at me inquisitively, but said nothing. I was sure he didn’t believe me, but he was just glaring at me. Dr. Arthur broke the silence. “Seth, do you want me to look at your face?” “Nah, it will heal in no time. Just need some human blood,” Seth replied. “OK, then I will take a look at Sabrina,” and Dr. Arthur took me by the shoulder, spreading the tingles all over me, making me go with him. I got his hint to get out of there. I could still feel Seth’s angry eyes on me as I was leaving. I felt a twinge as my voice was gone again. Dr. Arthur took me to his office in the mansion and sanitized the cut. His face was so close to mine while he was doing it that I felt that I could barely breathe. The tingles were getting too intense. “I will take you home,” he said, “just in case.” I thought it was strange that he would walk with me, but I didn’t mind this time. I was sure Seth would not harm me in front of Arthur. For the time being, I felt safe. I thought I could relax, but my body started to shake. I felt Arthur’s hand on mine, but when I looked down, he was not holding it. I must have been too stressed and have been imagining things. Fiona was waiting for us outside. “I was searching for Dr. Arthur, but he was talking to Mr. Jules. I could not leave thinking you might be getting in trouble, but I didn’t know who else to talk to,” Fiona told me. “I am glad you are OK.” The three of us walked to the trailer park. Dr. Arthur walked us both to the trailer park. Fiona was surprised and quiet. She left us when we reached the park. Arthur walked me all the way to Maria’s trailer. “Be safe,” he told me. I thought he was going to say something else. He leaned into me, but then almost jumped back and disappeared into the dark. I thought I saw a shadow move next to the trailer. I looked around but could see no one, and I headed inside as fast as I could. I fell on the bed and was out instantly. There were no dreams this time, just darkness, which I welcomed. In the morning, I had to head back to the mansion. I was nervous and alert at all times. However, most of the day was uneventful. I did all the tasks and didn’t see any vampires around the house. It was getting late when Seth grabbed me and pulled me into a small supply room. “I appreciate you kept your little mouth shut, little pet,” he said. “Do you know why my glamour is not working on you?” he looked into my eyes. I shook my head. “Well, don’t consider yourself safe. I will use that instead.” Then, he touched something on his wrist, and I was in agony coming from my collar. Then he pushed it again, and I could breathe without pain. “I will leave you out today since you didn’t tell my father about our encounter. But remember who your Master is.” He touched my chin and left me there. All I wanted was to get out of this place. Everyone, including Maria, had left, but Jessica made me stay two extra hours. I knew she was still mad at me. Eventually, I was done with all my chores and left the dreadful mansion. Walking into the trailer, I heard Maria talking to Leo. “Do you think I imagine this, or the new girl looks much like Bonny?” Leo didn’t reply as I barged into the kitchen. That night, I went with Fiona and her friends to hang out. It was good to be with girls and not think about lurking danger. So, we sat around the fire and chatted. Well, they talked as I still could not speak. They discussed the guys in the pack and who liked who, who found their mate, and who didn’t. The girls also talked about how grandparents told stories about the mate bond and how a collar prevented them from completing the bonding. So instead, we all had to wear a Master’s mark. I was curious what the bond completion would feel like. I used to hate hanging out with my best friend Michelle’s friends. They always treated me well, but I felt out of place and thought something would be wrong with me. I didn’t know what it was, could never figure it out. Here I was, living in the worst, most dangerous circumstances imaginable. I knew very little about werewolves’ lives. However, even though I was an outsider, they accepted me as their own, and it felt good to be there. I could not speak, but somehow thought for the first time that I belonged with them. For the last few days, I felt emotions I never thought I could. There was a tiny spark of happiness in my heart that was growing. The fire was warm; the people were friendly, and I tried to learn as much as possible from listening to them. A dark figure awaited me next to the trailer when I got home. I smelled the air, but no foul smell came into my nostrils. At least it was not Seth. The man came close, and I could see that it was Jakob. “Why were you walking with the vampire last night?” he asked bitterly. He must have seen Arthur, but I could not explain anything. I could not speak. He grabbed me and kissed me almost violently, yet his lips were so soft and warm. “You are mine,” he growled, “Only mine.” Are we mates?
