“I can smell Alpha Jakob all over you. Why are you all wet? Did he pull you out of the ditch?” she asked and looked at me suspiciously. I nodded eagerly." There are not that many in Agora. How can you be so clumsy? If I didn’t know Alpha Jakob any better, I think something must be between you two. Still, he has never shown an interest in anyone before, so I don’t know if you are that special..." she looked me up and down again. “Although Master’s behavior was the most peculiar, that is not for us to even think about,” she added.
I was trying to contain my happiness. It made me feel amazing! He only wanted me and no one else. Could that be true? Am I really special? I was trying to look very sad and shaken up so she would not figure out anything.
She gave me an extra uniform and showed me the way to the party. “Watch your step next time,” she said. I only nodded.
The disgusting smell hit me first. Everything in the mansion already stank, but the party was full of so many vampires that I had to catch my breath. The lights were pulsing like in a disco. The music was not very loud, probably allowing people to hear each other. Although I heard sporadic screams, I could not see where it was coming from. Chills were running through my body when I heard them.
Jessika took me to another girl about my age, in a uniform with a collar on her neck. “Fiona, teach this new girl the ropes.”
Fiona nodded, and Jessika walked off.
“What is your name?” she asked me.
I pointed to my collar yet again.
“Oh, you are the mute one. It’s OK. I will show you what to do,” said Fiona. “This must be hard for you. I heard you are not from around here. We should see each other. I will introduce you to others, so you don’t feel alone. You are staying with Maria, right?”
I nodded. “She is great. You are in excellent hands! Maybe a little boring,” she giggled.
“Cleaning supplies are over here. Just grab this small bag and have it on you at all times, so you can react quickly.”
“Let’s go around. Follow me.” I followed her through the room full of changing lights and fancy-dressed people. I noticed now that they looked pristine without imperfections. They must all be vampires. Even the ones that looked older had perfect posture and no wrinkles. There was just something more mature about their demeanor.
Many of them were drinking thick red liquid out of a martini glass. Servant girls wearing collars walked through the crowds with a tray full of red drinks.
Fiona pointed to different spots on the floor that we had to clean. They were all really dark red. I wiped them and realized they were bloodstains. Is that what they were drinking and not being careful?
Then I saw it. Some vampires didn’t have a drink in their hands. But they had a person standing next to them on a belt leash. They periodically pulled the leash, bringing the victim closer and sinking their teeth into their necks. The humans that were used as meals mostly calmly obliged without signs of any pain. They must have been glamoured.
I saw something looking like a bar, but it didn’t just have a bunch of alcohol bottles. Instead, many people were sitting inside the bar on the bench, and bartenders would attach devices to their necks to siphon blood into the glasses to serve the guests. I could not believe what I saw and how mundane it was for everyone around me.
Fiona caught me staring and said, “Do not stare like that. Let’s keep moving.”
While I was cleaning a spot on the floor, the woman dressed in all silver told her leashed human, “Get back to normal.” The guy next to her looked around in confusion. She grabbed him and started sucking on his neck. He began to scream until he could not anymore. When she was done, she told him, looking into his eyes. “You are just dreaming. Stand next to me until I say so. Everything is fine”.
“I like a little fear from my drink,” she told her companion.
Suddenly we heard a thump. Fiona looked around quickly and saw a girl lying on the floor beside a non-caring couple.
We rushed to pick her up and carried her through the doors to a different room.
Two girls were already lying on the mattresses thrown on the floor, and one was sitting up. Dr. Arthur was there. All the people had IVs with some liquid in them.
We placed the girl we brought on the mattress on the floor. Dr. Arthur checked her pulse and proceeded to give her an IV.
“We must rush back to clean up,” Fiona told me. We wiped the blood from the floor while the vampire women chatted and eyed us with disgust.
“Clean it first next time, before leaving a mess,” one of them told me.
We went on picking up more bodies. Luckily, everyone was alive. I was exhausted, and there seemed to be no end to the party.
“We should check the bathrooms,” said Fiona and sighed.
We were walking to the bathroom, and right outside the door, there were Mr. Jules and Seth. I remember seeing him in Rebecca’s room earlier that day. Mr. Jules seemed to be furious. He was arguing with Seth.
“I expect you to be better than that! Anyone can do what you do. It’s all about control, stopping before their last breath. I expected my son to learn control and perfection.”
“I don’t understand what the big deal is. Just send your people to find and glamour the relatives,” Seth replied.
“I want you to carry on my legacy. Learn the true power. You do not seem to understand what it requires. You have to be flawless at everything that you do, an example to the rest,” Mr. Jules replied.
I could not tell who was angrier, Seth or Mr. Jules.
Then I saw Seth glaring at Fiona and me as we walked, overhearing their conversation.
We rushed into the bathroom to find another girl lying on the floor. She looked very pale.
“Damn, I think she is gone,” Fiona said. “We still need to carry her back to the doctor.”
We picked up her cold body and carried her to the room with Dr. Arthur. The party was almost done, and it was much easier to walk without people in the way. However, I was still praying that the girl was alive.
The room was empty. They must have taken the humans somewhere else. Dr. Arthur checked the girl.
“She is gone,” he said. I wanted to scream or cry like the whole evening seemed like I was living and serving in hell itself.
“Take her to the basement,” he added. He looked upset, yet he was one of them, the vampire bloodsuckers, the killers.
Fiona signed, and we carried her down multiple flights of stairs to the basement.
We put her down there. I was crying uncontrollably.
Fiona hugged me.
“There is nothing we can do. It’s hard, but you will eventually get used to this. Just be glad they don’t suck our blood and consider us dirty animals. Lucky for us. They rarely assault or drink us,” she signed again.
“There will be another crew coming to get rid of the body. So let’s get out of here,” Fiona told me.
I could not wait to leave the basement. It brought back dreadful memories.
We were headed to the door when Seth walked right into it.
“Why did my dad make me do the lowly cleaning job?” he seemed to be talking to himself. But then he saw us, pointed to me, “You, stay and help.”
Fiona paused, uncomfortably looking at me.
“What are you looking at?” he asked her. “Go on to your other tasks.”
Fiona rushed out, leaving me behind.
Seth slowly walked toward me.
“So, what do we have here?”
I backed off, and he kept moving forward confidently, without rushing.
I walked into a wall while Seth caught up with me. I didn’t know what to do. He grabbed my neck with one hand, keeping me in place.
“Why did my daddy bring you here instead of killing you? It is very, very weird. I would love to get to the bottom of it.” He paused. “There must be something special about you,” he continued.
“I really would love to find out. They say you are dirty creatures, but I don’t mind. I think I need to taste you, just not sure in which spot yet?” he squeezed my neck more, “Here or here?” he started moving his other hand between my breasts, slowly down to my stomach. I tried to scream, but nothing came out.
