I gradually rose up on all four wolf legs. Finally, I was getting a grip on what was happening. Then, I heard Lea's voice in my head.
"Let's get rid of him once and for all!" I felt Lea's strength, her power within me. She was there now, always there.
I was still in shock. I carefully tried to walk in the wolf's body. It was not an easy task. I fell down a few times, but finally, I was able to move forward.
Then Lea must have taken over, and she jumped right next to Seth.
"You are too slow!" she griped at me.
She smelled Seth and was reaching for his neck.
I willed myself the control to stop her. I could not kill. I was not ready.
"We have to," Lea told me. "Remember the dead girl in the bathroom? That could have been you."
"Can we get back to my body?" I asked, trying to delay the decision.
"We could, but we'll be much more vulnerable," Lea said.
I was thinking, I knew Lea was right about everything. But I just could not do it.
"I am not ready to sink my teeth into him," I told her.
"It technically would be me, and I could push you so much deeper into the subconscious, you would not even know what is happening," she offered.
"But I will have to live with it afterward for the rest of my life!"
"OK, let's see if we can get out of here," she replied.
We went to the door. The door was closed. Lea grabbed the doorknob with her mouth and turned it, and we started to run up the stairs.
Suddenly, I heard Jakob's voice. "Are you alive? I can feel you! We have a connection now."
I was so glad to hear Jakob's voice. I stopped at the staircase.
"I am out of the basement, but I need to figure out how to escape," I was able to talk to Jakob through my thoughts. It was mind-blowing!
"The front door is always guarded heavily by at least three people," he said. "I can try and take them out so you can escape."
"Let me see if I can run away using the help's room exit," I replied quickly. I would not want Jakob to die trying to save me.
"You go there while I check the outside. There is another set of guards that walk around the mansion all night, so if you can leave, it has to be just at the right time, so they don't catch you.
"Harry, get me my Lea!" I heard a different voice that was similar to Jakob's but slightly harsher. That must be Luke.
We ran! Lea and I in one body of a wolf.
I reached the help's room quickly. Lea pulled on the handle for the exit door quietly and carefully, using her teeth again, but it must have been locked with the key for the night.
"I can try and break the door," she told me, "But that most likely will bring guards, and we'll have a hard time getting out alive."
I was trying to conceive some plan to escape the mansion before Seth or Mr. Jules woke up, or someone else accidentally stumbled into me.
"Are there any other doors out of here?" I heard Lea.
"There is a balcony that is the ballroom, maybe you can take a leap, but it's pretty high," Jakob said.
"We're going," I replied, and we started running through the mansion. I had to give Lea the reins because I couldn't control the wolf's body well and kept tripping. We maneuvered around the furniture, up the stairs, and through the multitude of corridors until we reached the ballroom.
Carefully opening the door, we looked inside. The ballroom was dimly lit, like the rest of the mansion at night. This was the room where I had witnessed vampires treating people like snacks without regard for their lives. However, it looked very different from the last time I was there. No tables were set up, and the chairs were all moved to the sides of the room.
We had to cross the spacious room to check if the balcony door was locked. I felt more vulnerable in the open space of the ballroom than up the stairs and through the corridors. Even though the place was dimly lit, crossing the giant room made me even more fearful.
"Let's not go straight for the door; let's walk along the walls. I have a bad feeling about this room," I suggested to Lea.
"There is no one outside the balcony for now," Jakob's voice echoed.
Despite there being no cages, the ballroom still gave me the creeps. We moved along the wall that connected to the vampire bar.
Underneath the customer's side, I heard noise and the smell of vampires nearby. We stretched on the floor and froze. There must be someone on the other side, but we couldn't see who it was. Lea and I began to argue whether we should peek or not. Lea wanted to break the balcony doors and jump off the roof, but I convinced her to take a look.
We saw that it was Rebecca sitting on the floor, drinking straight from the bottle. She was pretty wasted, sobbing and whimpering on the floor.
"Where are you?" Jakob's voice interrupted. "Do not try to come out. The guards are right under the balcony."
We waited patiently until the guards passed. I considered asking Rebecca for help, but she was in no state to do so.
"It's clear. The guards have passed," Jakob's voice reassured.
We crawled quietly until we reached the doors separating us from freedom. Lea turned the inside lock with her teeth, and we opened the balcony. The alarm started blaring, the lights turned on, and we heard voices outside yelling. It was too late to regret our decision. We ran to the balcony rails and leaped down!
