21. Connection

1019 Words
I was back in the cage with my wolf. I knew I was not in the real world, so I must have passed out from the pain. And the cage was shaking again. Ripples of the cracks were still growing through the walls. Then, eventually, I saw the light coming through the cracks and getting brighter. Everything around me was coming in and out of focus. I didn't know if it was because I was dying in the real world or because Jakob's wolf was trying to reach us, shaking the containment that Lea was in. "Concentrate and see if you can feel Jakob and Luke on the other side." I heard Lea's voice. "How do I do this?" I asked, confused, barely able to think. "Picture Jakob and imagine reaching for him. You are about to touch his hand," said Lea. I concentrated while everything around me was shaking, but nothing was changing. Instead, I felt weaker and weaker. "Take all your anger and anguish and push," Lea commanded. I was angry and scared, and I was tired. I saw myself attacking Seth and Mr. Jules, ripping their throats with Lea's teeth, yet I was still in her containment cell. I felt that the last hope was leaving me. "Think about what you love about him. Then, you should focus on those special moments you shared," Lea encouraged me. I thought about Jakob, and I remember that first moment when I saw him in the car, that someone was just there for me at the worst moment. Then I saw him, a stranger, dancing under the moon in the woods right next to me. Then I saw him pulling me out of the ocean, fighting him, embracing him, kissing him. I remember how I realized that he was there to protect me, not to harm me. Then I remembered the moment in the trailer when he shared his most hurtful memories, and we held each other on the floor. I remembered our sweetest nights together. Everything started to crash and fall around me. It must be how it feels to finally slip away. At least I experienced love and friendship before leaving this world, yet I was sad as there was so much to share that I was so close to things I wanted to achieve, and I would never know what could have been. Then, suddenly, Lea and I were standing on the glowing path in the woods. The road itself was shining as if it was covered in glitter. The wind was blowing my hair and my clothes. The trees were moving with the wind. It seemed as if the wind was singing something in my ear. I saw the giant moon shining on us from the sky, and then I saw them! Jakob and his wolf ran toward us. We ran as well to get to Jakob and Luke. When we reached each other, I embraced him. He held me tight. Our wolves were on the ground, biting each other playfully. Maybe this is what heaven looks like, I thought. Then I heard him speak. "We have broken it, your wolf is free, and I have a connection with you. You didn't show up last night, but Maria told me you were locked up again. Are you safe? Why are they holding you in there?" What should I tell him? I would be dead within the next few minutes. I didn't want him risking his life to save mine. I was sure he would die trying. I could not let him sacrifice himself for me. "I love you, I said and pulled out my hand." Then I fell, I fell hard. I was back in the real world. My neck was hurting from the bite, but every muscle was aching with a different type of ache. I felt strange power running through my body. I was still lying on the hard and cold floor. Everything seemed a bit off. It was gloomy, but now I only saw everything in brownish-gray colors. I looked around to where Seth was. The smell of him was even more disgusting than before. I could hear his every step, though. Where is he? My cage was wide open, and Seth was pacing outside the cell, talking to someone. "So, you told me she was the perfect candidate." but there was no other person in the room, just us. "Yes," he replied to himself. "For some reason, dad treats her differently, so I chose her out of all the females in the pack. I am sick and tired of hearing how I am not that perfect son I am supposed to be", he continued. I realized he was talking to himself. From what I gathered before that night, he was fairly evil and crazy, but this went beyond what I could have imagined. Did he lose his mind? Is he talking about me? I felt chills running through my body. "I want to see some bloodshed," he replied. "So, did you impregnate her yet?" he asked himself. I needed to figure something out fast, I thought, still listening. "My clothes are tight and uncomfortable," he said out of the blue. "You better hurry. What if dad decided to kill her after all?" he continued. "Well, there are other wolves here who will take her place, it might just not be as much fun, though." "Go on then, finish what you started." he kept talking to himself. "I feel so tired and not so much in the mood," he mumbled. "I need to rest," he continued while still talking to himself. "Oh, look, there is a cute doggy here. Hi puppy," he said, looking right at me, and he fell on the floor snoring loudly. I was trying to figure out if I should attack or run for the door. I decided to stand up quietly, but I felt that my feet were not there to hold me. Everything felt different: my body, my head, my eyes, my feet. Finally, I looked down at myself. I was the wolf. I was Lea.
