Third Person’s POV
After the future Luna Eva settled in, Beta Jack — still feeling very weak went home. He was in doubt about the information Smith had sent him through the mind link. But just for safety, he had sent a decoy to go through the part he was supposed to follow, and they were attacked.
He was wondering if the whole thing was planned to set Lyann up, but he had known Smith for ages and not once had he shown any sign of treachery, so he decided to have a word with him.
He remembered hearing an unfamiliar voice in his head asking if he was still within the pack territory. He affirmed that he was and asked to know who was trying to communicate with him. At that point, Smith had introduced himself and told him to listen carefully as his assignment, and possibly his life, depended on what he was about to say.
He had gone ahead to explain that Lyann was heard by someone he trusted with his life, having a conversation that involved an ambush that should see him dead.
He was stunned beyond belief, but only gave credence to what he was hearing because he had been battling with weakness. He was currently at the border of their territory, trying to figure out what was wrong with him.
After hearing that he had been fed wolf’s bane by Lyann, he had asked his wolf to go to sleep, as that would help him heal faster. After shutting his wolf off, he had carried on with the journey, making sure to go through the proposed part; but had sent a decoy and followed another route back. He had gambled that move and was thankful it paid off, as only he and two other warriors escorted Eva back to their pack.
As he was going home, he felt his wolf, Stan, stirring and telling him to deal with the b***h. But he argued that it was impossible to accuse her without evidence or motive. So, the best action would be to quietly watch her. He reassured him that he would be careful, seeing as Stan never accepted Lyann; he had put it down to the fact that he lost his fated mate and had refused to recover from that incident.
He knew he had to tell the Alpha, but he also knew that the Alpha may tell Luna Abigail. If that happens, Lyann might get to know she had been caught; that is, if she was the culprit.
But whatever happens, the Alpha needed to know, so that both Smith and Lyann could be properly investigated. Another reason Alpha Alex needed to know was that the young Alpha would be coming back in a week, and they needed to make sure there were no loopholes within their pack.
Talia’s POV
When we arrived at the house, the guards stationed themselves outside the four corners of the house. As soon as we walked into the house, the cleaner and other domestic staff went straight to the kitchen and I was left alone with Eva. She looked round and, to my surprise, disgust contoured her face.
“Which i***t decorated this house?” She spat.
I was taken aback by the venom in her voice and for a few seconds, I just stood there, lost for words.
“Hope you are not an i***t yourself, because I can’t stand them.” She said, looking at me, causing me to quickly compose myself and I replied that I am not. The next statement she made was that I shouldn’t unpack her bag, that she would prefer to stay in the pack house until this house is redecorated.
After Eva’s instructions, I summoned the head of her guards and asked him to mind link Luna Abigail and inform her that her presence was needed here.
After about fifteen minutes of awkward silence, the Luna arrived in a bit of panic, asking if everything was alright.
“Everything is fine, but I would prefer to stay at the pack house until my mate arrives.” She said in a sweet voice, and carried on as though she wasn’t the one spitting venom just a few minutes ago.
She explained that there was no way she would be able to settle in — without her mate. That the short stay at the pack house would help her acquaint herself better with pack members.
Luna Abigail saw reason with what she said and within the next hour, she was moved and settled into the top floor of the pack house. The west wing of the floor was reserved for the alpha, while the east wing is for the Beta and Gamma.
The remaining accommodation on this floor is reserved for use when they have high ranking visitors. The Alpha, Beta and Gamma have their family houses close to the woods, leaving this top floor empty. It has only been used a handful of times when the pack hosted some functions and other alphas and their betas were invited.
As soon as everyone else left, she asked me to run her bath, giving me instructions on how she liked the temperature of her water and other details of her bath rituals. When I was done fixing her bath, she stepped into the bathroom, while I proceeded to put away the clothes she took off. In this process, I noticed some sort of pebbles sewn into the inside of her gown. But what intrigued me was that they were soft to my touch.
Just as I was putting away her shoe, she came out and asked me where her clothes were.
I replied that they have been put away. Her next action surprised me. She made a move to slap me, but I was so quick to step back — thinking I can’t be slapped twice in a day.
She lost her balance but thankfully fell on the couch.
“How dare you?!” she shrieked.
I looked at her, questions written all over my face. Just then, one of the Omegas knocked on the door to inform me that Alpha Alex needed me in his office right away.
Thinking in my head that this day definitely could not get any worse, I started making my way to find out why I was being summoned yet again. I thought of how ironic it was that just a week ago, I was living an invisible life — and this week, it seemed every day, I was either at the Alpha’s or Luna’s office; for one reason or the other.
Third person’s POV
After everything seemed to have quietened down and Eva settled into the top floor of the pack house, Beta Jack gave direct instructions to the guards assigned to her. They were to make sure apart from the Alpha, Luna Abigail, and Talia, no other person should have access to this floor. Whenever the cleaners were to tidy Eva’s room, a guard was to be present until they were done. When he was satisfied with everything, he headed to the kitchen to fetch something to eat, as he wasn’t so sure about eating at home anymore.
When he was done, he went home and grabbed a quick shower, after deciding it was best to tell the Alpha what happened. He was surprised to see Lyann at the Alpha’s office when he got there. As soon as he walked in, Lyann lunged at him with fury written all over her; she was physically shaking with it.
“So, you now humiliate me before everyone, right? Haven’t I been a good enough mate for you? I may not have been your fated mate, but I have stepped up to this position when you chose me. Why will you now choose to make me an object of mockery before the whole pack?” she fired all at once.
Jack stood there looking at her, all confused, and she angrily told him not to stand there as though he didn’t know what he had done wrong, to which he replied he did not know.
“IN THAT CASE LET ME TELL YOU!” she yelled.
She proceeded to explain how she was humiliated by the guards. They have outrightly refused to allow her to go and welcome Eva — because he had given orders that restricted even her.
“Does this mean I am only the female Beta in words?” she asked, sobbing at this point.
The Alpha cleared his throat and asked if they would like to take this home and sort it out privately. But Lyann refused and asked the Alpha to overturn Jack’s orders, as she knew he was headstrong and would not bulge. Especially since she was not his fated mate — and so did not hold much sway with him.
At this request, the Alpha looked at his Beta. He knew the man standing before him since they were babies and knew he had a reason for taking such a decision. So, instead, he looked at Lyann.
“I appreciate your efforts and role as the female Beta of this pack, but I need to point out to you that Jack does nothing of his own will when it concerns my pack.”
Lyann, at this statement, looked at the Alpha incredulously, as if he just grew another head, and stated how disappointed she was. The alpha silenced her in his authoritative voice, and immediately she kept quiet and left the office.
After about a minute, the Alpha looked at Jack and he sent him a mind-link, that they needed to talk in private. So, he quickly mind-linked his guards, asking them to make sure no one was to be let anywhere close to his office until he told them otherwise. After which, he also mind-linked his mate to say he would be late and was in a meeting with Jack.
After Jack finished narrating what had happened that morning. He went on to explain how Lyann had casually asked him the route he would be taking to the dark moon pack, and how there had been an ambush waiting at the perfect spot on that route. But thankfully, it was a decoy that went through that passage.
He explained about the wolf’s bane, and when he was done, the Alpha’s look was colder than a frozen winter morning. They discussed some more, then decided to bring Smith in, to explain how he was privy to this information.
When Smith received the Alpha’s summoned, he was not surprised as he had been expecting it. He sighed and headed to the Alpha’s office, thinking in his heart that Talia’s life would never be the same again.
After explaining how he came to know about the information, he looked at Jack sympathetically and apologetically. He hated to be the one to break the news of his cheating mate to him. However, he rather to do it himself than allow his Talia to do it. Alpha Alex looked at him and asked,
“hope you know I am speaking to your daughter about this?”
To this, he nodded. The Alpha asked a guard to send for Talia, since she could not be mind-linked.
Talia’s POV
I was so relieved when a knock on the door announced that I was needed at the Alpha’s office, hurriedly leaving Eva’s room; but not without seeing the chilling look she gave me. I know what just happened between us was far from over, but I was just glad to escape it for now.
I went to the Alpha’s office with a lot of thoughts on my mind; honestly kicking myself for the millionth time for not asking permission to travel with Mimi.
As soon as I stepped in, I almost ran back out as I saw the Alpha, Beta Jack, and my papa all wearing very serious expressions. Is it possible that Eva had already mind-linked them? But that will be impossible as the rituals to integrate her into the pack had not yet been performed, or could she have special abilities as a watcher?
“Alpha you sent for me,” I said, after greeting them.
“Yes Talia, please have a seat, as what we are discussing is very serious and we need you to be very honest with us.”
Looking at my papa, he just gave me a small nod and a tiny bit of smile as if to reassure me. Then the Beta spoke up,
“Talia, I do hope you know there is no reason why you should fear anyone in this room. You should know we all here, in one way or the other way, have a duty to protect you”
To this, I answered that I was fully aware.
He went on to explain what my papa had told them and the seriousness of my accusation about Lyann. When he was done, the Alpha then asked me to explain everything I saw and head to them, as they would like to hear it directly from me.
I told them how I had gone out very early that morning to go to any of the lakes in the forest. Recounting everything that happened. From when I got to the lake, to when I got back home and went straight to my papa to tell him what I saw and heard.
After I finished, the Alpha asked me some questions. The last question threw me off guard because he asked if I made this all up just to spite Lyann, because the Luna had mentioned it to him, that I and Lyann did not see eye to eye.
I answered honestly that it was true Lyann seemed to hate me, but the feeling was not mutual. I have no reason to hate her; and just until a little over a week ago, I have never had anything to do with her — so why would I hate her?
“Talia is my daughter, and I know her like I do my other children, if not better than my other children. I know she will never make up a story like this.” My papa spoke up at this point.
Turning to my papa, I gave him a small smile, and he reached out and gave my left hand an assuring squeeze.
The Alpha looked at his Beta, then addressing everyone. He said since it was only the four of us that knew about this, he demanded we keep it that way till they were done investigating Lyann. But then an idea struck me.
“Alpha, please permit me to make a suggestion,” I said.
He gestured for me to carry on. I told them that just because just because I happened to come across what I saw, did not mean it had not been going on.
“I would suggest to have either Mark or Beta Lyann placed under watch, and when next they meet, as they would do — then they can be apprehended and questioned.”
The Alpha nodded but said, at this point, he wouldn’t trust anyone to do so. At that moment, I suggested that Nate could watch Mark, as I trust him with my life.
“It is settled. For now, we will have Nate keep a close eye on Mark and then wait.”
Beta Jack suggested, baiting the trap by telling Lyann that he was going on another assignment and would be leaving early day after. A few more things were said and ironed out, then I and my papa were dismissed.
Third Person’s POV
As Talia and her father were leaving the Alpha’s office, Lyann saw them and wondered what could be happening; she had tried getting close enough to hear them but could not. She was frustrated with not knowing any of their discussion and was thinking about if it had to do with Axel’s return. She dismissed that thought as such discussion wouldn’t have involved Smith. So, she decided to find out from the Luna. She hissed in disgust at the thought of Abigail, always playing the perfect Luna, as if she was the glue holding the pack together.
She imagined wielding the power that comes with being the Luna of this great pack and wondered if she should via off track a little and take her out, as well as Jack and then cosy up to Alex. She smiled as the thought looked more and more charming; she could make it look like a little accident and then lend a shoulder, plus another palatable part of her body, to alpha Alex.
Giving a satisfied nod, she started — making her way to the Luna’s office, to first find out what the pathetic leaders were planning next.
