Talia’s POV
After leaving the Alpha’s office with papa, I hugged him and told him that I had to go back to Eva; to check if she was up from her nap and help her get ready for the casual dinner — being held in her honour tonight. But before I could turn, he held my hands and said I should forgive him for revealing the source of the information.
Looking around to make sure no one was close enough to hear us — because wolves had a very keen sense of hearing, I told him not to worry himself as he had done the right thing, after all our duty and loyalty was to our pack. When I got back to the first floor, I went straight to Eva’s door and knocked lightly, just in case she was still sleeping. But she responded that I should come in.
Immediately I opened the door and stepped into her room. The smile on her face dropped off and she was staring at me with so much intensity — that I became uncomfortable. At this point, I knew I had to say something. She spoke before I could.
“So, you have the guts to show your disloyal face to me after causing me to fall.” She sneered.
“I’m sorry, it was an accident, and I only stepped out of your reach by reflex,” I said.
She stood up and walked towards me, stopping just a few inches before me — and asked if my reflex would be good enough to sidestep her this close.
I kept quiet, and she raised her palm, but before she’d lifted her hands, I already knew what was coming and could easily have avoided it if I wanted to. However, I felt it was best to allow her to have her way and settle this now — instead of annoying her, the Alpha, Luna, Beta, and possibly the whole pack. I closed my eyes and in the next instant, I felt a stinging slap on my left cheek and then another on my right cheek. Then I opened my eyes to look at her.
“You missed one earlier.” She said, smiling.
I coiled my toes and counted from ten to one, in a bid to control my anger, and when the rage within me subsided, I asked her if she needed anything. As a reply, she asked what time the dinner was, and I told her she still had about two hours. She grunted and gave me orders on the kind of snacks she would like before then, when I stepped out of her room to make my way to the kitchen — the guards were surprised to see my cheeks red, with fingerprints on them. Of course, she didn’t know that I do not heal like every other wolf.
Quickly putting a tray together with the requested snacks, I made to head upstairs when the Luna walked in; and with one look at my cheeks, she asked me to drop the tray and sit down.
“What happened to you?” she asked.
“I had a little accident.”
“I’m not asking again.” I am not going to ask a second time, she said with authority.
So, I explained everything that happened, and I could see she wasn’t happy about it; but probably didn’t want to make a fuss in my presence.
When I returned to Eva with the tray of snacks, she asked what had taken so long and I just told her that I needed to make sure everything was perfect. Thus, she nodded and told me to get out and be back half an hour before dinner, to help her get ready. Walking into my room, all I could do was flop down on the bed and refuse to shed a single tear.
Third person’s POV
After Smith and Talia left the Alpha’s office. He had mind-linked Nate to come to his office; when Nate walked into the Alpha’s office, he saw both the Alpha and Beta waiting for him. Very sure that it was his father’s scent he was picking up, he looked at them in confusion.
“Is everything alright with my father?” He asked, and the Beta nodded, asking him to sit down.
“We need you to carry out a task for your pack,” he said, and this made Nate sit up.
“I will do any and everything for my pack,” he replied.
The Alpha then carried on with the assignment, asking him if he was friends with Mark; the wolf who came to their pack for training. Nate replied that he knew him, but that they were not friends.
“Good, that means you can carry out this important assignment,” he continued speaking.
Explaining to Nate that, starting from that very moment, he was required to monitor every move that Mark makes. He was to mind linking the Beta, should he discover anything interesting.
“You do not need to be told the importance of this assignment, or do you?” He asked.
“No, I do not,” Nate responded.
He was told that even his mate should not be aware of this. After Nate left the office, Alpha Alex looked at his only friend and said,
“Jack, I think dark times are already upon us.”
Outside of the Alpha’s office, Nate wondered why Mark was being investigated. Sure, he did not like the guy, but he did not wish him the displeasure of being on the wrong foot with the Alpha. Could it be that his escapades have reached the Alpha? Nate wondered, remembering how he had punched the fool. After Talia complained that he was harassing her, Nate decided that he had it coming for a long time now.
While Nate was with the Alpha and Beta, Lyann was busy searching for the Luna, she was not at her office. She went to her house and was told by an Omega that she went to the park house. Furious that she has been walking around all day, and has achieved nothing, coupled with the fact that Jack was still alive, she stormed to the pack house.
Mark was sitting outside with a blonde hair girl and did not see her coming. When she was near enough, she growled at them to go make use of their rooms. Mark jumped up, looking like he was caught committing a crime.
Sneering at them both, she asked if they had seen the Luna, and the girl affirmed that she has, saying that she went towards the kitchen. With one last look at Mark, she stormed off in that direction. The blonde girl looked at Lynn’s disappearing back, and after about thirty seconds of her disappearing, she turned to Mark and just said, “what is with her?” Not giving a second glance, Mark just shrugged, but in his heart, he knew he had a lot of explaining to do.
Stepping into the kitchen, Lyann remembered they had the stupid dinner. But outwardly, she smiled and asked the Luna why she didn’t ask her to check up on the kitchen.
“I did not know it’s something to fuss about, seeing it’s an internal affair,” she said.
“That is why I did not bother you; I just came here to talk with the cook and make sure everything is fine.”
“You know you should concern yourself more with important affairs of the pack, and not just the food.” Lyann said.
That statement made the Luna raise an eyebrow at her, as though asking what she meant by that. Quickly readjusting her words, she explained that the cook had been given instructions on what to do, and she would have been able to handle the kitchen so that the Luna could have the time to deliberate on pack matters with the Alpha.
Seeing as the Luna was still looking at her, she carried on. She told her how she was banned from having access to the top floor. Saying that if she as the Luna was there, maybe she would have been able to tell the men that it wasn’t right. Especially as she was not just a high-ranking wolf, but the Beta as well.
When Abigail did not react with surprise, she concluded that they all must have come to that decision.
“You know it may be better for everyone if I just leave this pack.” Lyann said, intending to see Abigail’s reaction than actually meaning it, and that got Luna’s attention.
“Why would you want to do that?”
“It is obvious I am not needed here; I have done everything I can to serve the pack, but I still feel as if no one notices my effort and it is making me bitter.”
Thinking this must be the reason for her temper, Abigail looked at her and spoke softly, apologizing for making her feel inadequate and assuring that she had never been underrated and will never be.
Seeing this as an opportunity to find out about the Smith’s visit to the Alpha. She asked her if everything was fine, and hope Talia had not started messing up her duty so soon, to warrant the Alpha sending for both her and her father.
Abigail said she was not aware that they met with the Alpha. That she was only aware of what Eva did to Talia and then told Lyann about the whole incident.
“One must wonder what she did to provoke Eva already. I will go up at once and straighten this out.”
Abigail interjected and assured her that there would be no need for that, as she intended to handle it herself.
*********
Lyann went home angry at not obtaining the information she wanted, and as soon as she stepped into the house, she saw Jack in the sitting room, looking out the window in deep thought. Inquiring if everything was alright, she went to him and hugged him from behind. It took all the willpower Jack had to stop his wolf — Stan — from taking over and tearing her to shreds right there.
Instead, he controlled his wolf and replied that everything was fine, but that he had another assignment in three days. She inquired what it was, and he told her that he would be going to the Lycan palace to make sure Alpha Axel returns, and she inquired if that would be necessary — seeing as his mate was already here.
“Well, you know how stubborn he can be. I have been asked to plead with the king himself to send him back.”
She was a bit flustered because she knew she had just tonight and tomorrow, to notify the rogues stationed outside the night boarders. She decided to find out the route Jack would take while going and have him attacked, as coming back would be impossible because the young Alpha would be with him and everyone knew he was a killing machine.
Sitting down, she asked if she could come along, as she had always wanted to see the palace. He turned her down, telling her his trip was for pack business and the road was a bit dangerous. With this, she inquired to know the route he would be taking, and he replied through the dark moon pack, as they were now strong allies. So, she nodded her head and quietly started working out her plans in her head.
