‘Ryker?’ my voice is small, barely a whisper, as I watch him with growing worry. The firefighter flinches at the sound of his name but doesn’t look toward me. His eyes close tight as his head falls forward, his chin nearly touching his chest. ‘Ryker?’ I call out again. I shift closer to him in my seat, my hand reaching out toward his before I hesitate in mid-air. I flick my gaze to his face, but the firefighter’s eyes remain shut, his breathing harsh as he squeezes the steering wheel under his fingers until his knuckles become pale.
