The little green light in the top corner of my phone kept flashing rhythmically and catching my eye whenever I tried to look away from it. I knew why it was flashing; Pippa had responded to my message. I had seen the well-meaning but entirely unhelpful words on the screen when the message came through but I wasn’t going to reply so I didn’t see any point in opening it. Every time the light flashed I felt like the phone was taunting me.
