Long drive

Ezra's pov “I really need to take a piss” Dom groaned from the passenger seat for about the thousandth time but I ignored him, keeping my eyes steady on the road. “Are you seriously going to act like you didn't hear me?” He tilted his head forward and tried to look me in the eye but I kept my focus. “Fine then, act like I don't exist, I bet you'd pay me a little attention after I piss in your precious car” he said, throwing himself back into the seat. “Try it and see how much longer you live” I said, the coldness in my tone making him gulp. “As much as I want to see that happen, I also need to pee, real bad” Lexie said from the back seat. “Yeah, me too” Brody said, making me sigh. “Fine, we'll stop at the next gas station” I grunted, unhappy about the stop. I wasn't planning on stopping for anything, even though I also needed the bathroom break. “And oh would you look at that, there's one in about two miles” Brody said, making me wonder if they hadn't planned it. I pulled up to the gas station and quickly realised my mistake. It had a f*****g diner! “No, we're not eating” I said as I got out, leaving them to follow behind me. “Oh come on Ezra, I'm hungry, and I know for sure you are too” Lexie whined but I just ignored her. There was no way we were going to waste more time, not if I could help it. “We've been on the road for twelve hours straight, we need food!” Brody said coming to stand in front of me but I didn't break stride and he ended up getting out of my way. “I swear I'll call your mom and tell her you're starving us. Bet our loving Luna would love to hear that” Dom said smugly, and only then did I stop and turn to face him. Bastard… I grit my teeth and held back the urge to wring his little neck. “You can get food, but you eat on the road” I almost growled the words just as the rest of the team got out of their car. “Use my mother against me again and you'll find yourself another team” I said and I swear I heard him gulp. “And fill up my tank!” This time, I growled, too annoyed to hold it back. “Yes Alpha” I heard him say as I walked into the bathroom on the side of the gas station. The others followed in after me, loud as ever. “What'd my i***t brother do now?” Matt asked as soon as he entered. “Threatened to call the Luna on Ezra” Brody laughed, making Matt shake his head. “Dumb ass” Matt muttered as he washed his hands. I walked out to get a bit of air and silence, there was never a moment of peace with them around. I stood overlooking the forest I was sure led to Red Oak packlands, this was their territory after all. The vibrant colours covering the trees was a sight to behold, I was positive Rowena would have loved to see this. She always did love fall. “My sweet, sweet Rowena” I sighed as a sharp pain stabbed at my insides. ...Flashback… “I told you we were going to die tonight” Brody said, the fear in his voice clear as day. “Then we take as many as we can” I said, taking out my switchblade spear, which would have been mistaken for junk metal if it wasn't for its intricate design, given how rusty it was from overuse. And with a click, it was long, ready to take life. “Lexie, in the middle with Row, watch our backs” I said as the beasts started to advance towards us, closing the circle. “No! I want to fight” Rowena said stepping forward, but I grabbed her hand and pulled her behind me. “I plan on walking out of this, with you by my side, so do as I say” I said and swiftly drove my spear into the chest of the first one to charge at us. “Lexie, we need a wall. Rowena, you watch Lexie. Help isn't too far away, if I can get my great grandfather, we'll have reinforcements so stay alive as long as you can!” I growled out the commands. After that, it was a blur of blood, growls, and the whistle of weapons slicing through the air in their quest to taste blood. I tried to reach out to my grandfather through our familial link, since elves didn't have mind link and it was too far to link my dad. Hard as it was to concentrate with all the fighting, I finally got a glimpse of him and seconds later, felt him reach back. “Great grandfather, we're in trouble, we need help, quickly” I sent the distress signal to him, hoping it was clear enough to understand. The sheer number of these creatures was overwhelming, even with all our training and the wall we used to control their point of attack. “Ezra! They're breaking through the wall, we can't keep this up much longer?” Max linked, but there was nothing I could do. I didn't even have the time to think of something. “I can't hold the wall! They're tearing through it!” Lexie cried, sounding exhausted. We were being to forced to break formation and I didn't think we'd survive that. “Great grandfather, please hurry” I called out to him, sending a mental picture of what was happening. At least this time, he felt near. I hope he gets here on time! Somewhere during the fight, I lost sight of Rowena, which caused a wave of panic to wash over me, but I couldn't stop to look, even when every fibre of my being pushed me to make sure she was okay. We were nowhere near finishing off the beasts we'd been fighting when a new wave hits us, hard. “Are they multiplying?!” Brody growled, making me fear the worst. I don't think help will get here on time! I spotted white flashes in the trees and breathed a little better, the elves, help had arrived. But I couldn't even enjoy the moment of reprieve because just when I thought we'd get out of this alive, a sharp pain tore through my neck as if something was biting into me, making me choke on air. But something was wrong, this pain, why was it tearing at my heart? Why was it ripping my soul in half? Taking in a sharp breathe that felt like inhaling needles, I killed the beast I was fighting and turned around to see my world fall apart. “No” the whisper flew out of me before I could even react, the sight before me crippling. “Rowena!!” The distant sound of Lexie’s voice echoed in my ears, the beast I could see charging at me from the corner of my eye of little interest to me as I felt myself die. Eyes locked on me, she fell on her knees, a tiny, sad smile on her face as the light in her eyes vanished; the beast that had taken joy in snuffing out the light in her eyes still hanging onto her neck; making sure she was truly dead. I have no idea how I closed the distance between us but in the blink of an eye, the beast that had taken her life lay dead at my feet and her lifeless body in my shaking hands. “Rowena, Rowena don't leave me, please, wake up. WAKE UP!” Everything turned cold and black, the twinkle in her eyes lost to the dullness of death. Inconceivable pain wrecked every fibre of my being, silencing the world around me, leaving me yearning to hear her whimsical laugh. “No, Row, please, no. Goddess please!!” … End of flashback… “Uhm… Ez.. Alpha?” A hesitant call brought me back to the present. “What?!” My voice was low but the growl vibrated under my feet like an earthquake. “You uhm, your ice, it's uh…” Lexie couldn't even finish her sentence. I opened my eyes to find my hands fisted and frozen over; the skies dark and snowing terribly; the ground beneath me black with ice. The kind that killed everything on its path. Shit! I lost control “Are you okay?” Her voice was tender, but I could also hear her fear, which caused me to reel back my pain and anger. “Yes” I said, taking deep breaths to calm myself so the storm would stop. “Ezra…” she called, gentler than before but I just turned and walked past her, returning to the car. “Let's go” I said to my team, who stood by the cars, fear written on their faces, even though they'd never voice it. Lexie got in the passenger side but the others remained outside, which made me sigh because I knew she was about to try and talk to me. “Not now Lex, I'm fine” I said, sounding a lot calmer than I felt. “You're not, and that's okay. I'm here for you, all of us are. We understand how you feel Ezra, we miss her too” her words had the opposite effect of what she was trying to do and holding back my tongue took all the strength I had. They didn't understand anything, she was a friend to them, but to me, she was my entire world, and I failed to protect her. “I said I'm fine Lexie” I said, my tone losing all its gentleness. “Okay, letting it go, I won't push you, but just so you know, my bike's in the other car if you want to get some air and speed” she said, making me sigh. The offer was nice, especially because she never let anyone ride her Ducati, and I wasn't about to let that opportunity pass me by. “Fine, but only because I don't want to hear your ugly ass voice” I said with a smirk, watching her gasp in mock horror. “My voice is incredible thank you very much! I might even be the next Whitney Houston” she said tilting her head up and pointing her nose upwards. “Stop listening to Brody, he's stupid” I chuckled as I got out of the car. “Why the hell am I catching stray bullets?!” Brody exclaimed, throwing his hands up dramatically. “Don't listen to him babe, you know he's always grumpy” Lexie said to her mate, blowing a kiss that immediately melted him to a senseless puddle. “I swear y'all love proving him right” Max said shaking his head. “And just so you know, we're not stopping for s**t until we get there” I said, taking the bike out of the back of the SUV. “Come on man, we're still a good twenty hours away!” Brody whined. “I sure do hope you got all the food you need” I said, getting on the bike and speeding off. “Do try to keep up” I linked them, knowing that was enough to have them on my tail in no time.
