Chapter 7

“They’ve found us!” Ryoka shouted in a panic, she was really getting frustrated by the fact that the WIC always seemed to find them no matter where they are and no matter how many times they lose them. “I know, I know” Damien said as he maneuvered the car and turned away from the lane they were on, swerving to avoid a couple of oncoming cars as he changed lane. “What! The airport is that way! You’re on the wrong lane!” Ryoka piped still panicking, she was wasn’t about to lose her only chance of getting back home. “I know, I know” Damien said again, “I don’t want them to see us heading for the airport, else they’ll know we are out of the country, we have to ensure they are clueless as to our location this time around, lest they keep finding us again like they just did” he explained to her. She thought this over for a while, it was wise not to show them their direction, true, besides if they chased them into the airport, things might get worse there, but… “Are you saying they are in Japan as well and might get to us there? Or they’ll fly there if they get to know that we are there?” Ryoka asked. Damien looked at her as if she was a child that was still suckling and doesn’t know a thing about the world and how it operates. “I had explained to you that they control the world itself from the shadows didn’t I? So could they be at just one place to achieve that?” he asked her and she looked down as she realized she was being truly naïve. “Ryoka, the WIC Inc. are everywhere you can think of, their reaches goes far and wide, the only place they couldn’t truly get to, the froze up the entirety of it, think about it” Damien said. They got to an intersection and Damien stopped the car, “Get out” he said shocking her at first “find your way to the airport, I’ll lead them off our trail and meet up with you” he said. “What! no! No way, I don’t think I can survive these people on my own, don’t leave me alone, please!” Ryoka pleaded with him in fear of being forsaken again. “Hey! Hey! Ryoka, I am not gonna leave you alone, but this here is necessary, I need to lead them off our trail so they don’t know we are moving out of the country like I’ve explained, so they’d stop chasing us even into where we are going next” Damien reasoned with her. Reluctantly she agreed and got out of the car “You promise to come back?” she asked before leaving. “Most definitely, but don’t wait out, board the plane, I’ll definitely catch up with you” he answered her reassuringly with a smile even, she like the smile, it was reassuring but his words weren’t as reassuring, they didn’t sound like the words of someone who would make it back to her. Then Damien drove off, quickly she ducked through the intersections and made her way to the other side, the actual lane to the airport and stayed under the cover of a couple of overhead passes where she was able to flag down a family going to the airport as well to take her there. Getting to the airport, she made her way around to board the plane, but while on the line she kept giving others her place on the line, hoping Damien would come before they all boarded, she did this till she was finally the last person on the line and even at that she tried to engage the ticket collector in a conversation just so she could delay the whole thing, but the man was unyielding to her methods. She finally boarded the plane and found her seat beside the window, how Damien knew this was where she loved to be when she boarded planes was beyond her, well maybe it was wishful thinking on her part or a good guess on his part or just as luck or fate would have it, any way it is she was glad for it at least. She looked at the empty seat beside her, the seat was Damien’s, and it was still empty, she stood up and craned her neck to look towards the entrance, no one else was coming in, then she sat back down, disappointed. The voice over the speakers started giving instructions for take off in the next few minutes, she did as instructed with her eyes tearing up, just then, someone sat beside her on the seat. “I told you I was going to make it, didn’t I?” Damien’s voice said to her and despite herself, she threw him a very tight hug and allowed the few drops of tears in her eyes fall on his shirt. “I really thought you wouldn’t” Ryoka acknowledged, then she disengaged the hug feeling a bit red and flustered, she accepted the fact that she had been taken over by her emotions. “Aww, c’mon I’m sure you couldn’t have possibly been missing me already now, have you?” je said to her mockingly. She punched him lightly on the shoulder, “Don’t even joke with me, not with that” she said in a jovial manner as well. “I always liked flying” Ryoka said to Damien after the plane had taken off to the sky and was balanced enough for the seatbelt light to go off. “I hated moving around so much as I grew older, but one thing I loved about it was whenever we had to fly to the new place, I couldn’t describe the feeling, I just know it was oddly satisfying, exhilarating, filling even” she said as she closed her eyes and imagined she herself as the plane. “I know the feeling, I feel that way too y’know, and do you know there are Eldrians as huge as a plane itself? The old generation dragons were so indefinite in size, you couldn’t predict just how large one would be, and some even developed the ability to change their size even while transformed, it was magnificent” Damien said dreamily. Ryoka opened her eyes as he said this, she looked at him and saw that he as well had closed his eyes, probably reminiscing about his past? “You talk as if you have had experience with actual Eldrians, the old generation dragons, have you met any?” Ryoka asked curiously. He open his eyes as well and caught himself, he cleared his throat as well, he had been going too far, “Oh yes, I have met a few while still in the WIC, I have heard stories from them about how it was in the continent, before you know, before WIC” he answered. “Tell me, what really happened to you Damien, what did the WIC do to you?” Ryoka asked subtly, she had been beyond curious all these while. Damien remained silent for a short few seconds “They devastated me” he finally said in reply, and then he relaxed back in his seat, showing he had no more interest in the conversation. Ryoka got the message quite well and so she herself decided to rest back as well, she was really hungry, but then she had known herself to be really resilient especially when it comes to hunger. But then all she has had for about two days now was just the fruits in the jungle and then the protein bars in the backpack Damien had given her. She would have to wait for the trolley before she could get anything though so why not rest at least that solves quite a bit as well. Not knowing how tired she was, she closed her eyes to rest, and then the fatigue took over and brought the lull of sleep, in a short while, she feel asleep. While flying above the plane, mirroring the plane’s shape, was a dragon drifting in and out of the clouds.
