Chapter 6

The feeling was all too familiar for Ryoka, sitting in a car and being on the road after the rush of packing and the feel of being chased, the only difference this time around was the fact that it was a good looking stranger that drove rather than her father. Deep down, all those years of moving, Ryoka had always suspected that there was more to it than just the simplicity of the nature of her father’s job requiring him to move about. Deep down, she had always felt as if they were being chased. Now though, she knows for sure, and she knows who the chasers are, and for the reason they were chasing them, her father had been right when he had told her all those years ago that it was all because of her. Ryoka felt a bit bitter at the fact that she had almost screwed up all the valiant effort of her father to keep her safe from the WIC all these nineteen years of her life. “Your father is a diamond-back dragon, the strongest category of new generation dragons, and from your description of the dragon he fought with, it was a bronze-back dragon the second strongest category” Damien continued his explanation on the dragons, he had stopped using the actual terms like Dn gene or Dn mutant and started using dragons (old generation, new generation and special generation) Ryoka commended his efforts for trying to clarify things for her, but her mind wasn’t really there with him, and she kept looking at the rearview mirror should in case they were being followed again this time. Last time she had her father, as a dragon to help her escape, at the moment she had Damien, and she had no idea what he was yet, although she was sure he had to be something, especially considering the reptilian eyes he had which he now hid behind sunglasses. “New generation dragons have no fire or any other special effects to them like the old generation or special generation, what they have is their size and durability, they can get really huge and they are tougher than all other generations” Damien continued not really bothered to check if Ryoka was following his explanation. “But then within them as well there is the hierarchy in which they are strong and tough, and like I said the top two are the diamond-back followed by the bronze-back, next is the platinum-back, then the wysterns and lastly the brownians” he said and this time he paused for a while. “My dad’s scales were glistening like obsidian laid in the sun, now that I think about it, it is one of the beautiful I have ever laid my eyes on” Ryoka said in the silence. “I know you miss him, but don’t you worry, your father is one of the best out there, it wasn’t just luck that got him to be a diamond-back, he had the Dn gene in abundance, hence the conversion was a glorious thing, he made captain within the ranks within a very few couple of years, he will meet up with us as he had said, rest assured” Damien said reassuringly. “You talk as if you really know him” Ryoka said, her curiosity started to get the best of her now, and she wanted to know about, well, everything, but especially Damien. “Oh I do, he save my life y’know, I am an unprecedented outcome as well, a failed experiment if you will, and I was to be written off, but he had compassion on me and helped me escape rather than kill me, and from there I and him set up the network of helping people escape and setting up a life for them” Damien explained. “I still can’t believe my father worked for the WIC, the very people responsible for so much wrong, and the disruption of so many families, the very people that are after us now” Ryoka complained. “Trust me when I tell you that the WIC are as well responsible for so much good and right in the world, which is why some people like your father had to stay there for long, playing along with them just so the good can continue and the bad stopped whenever it can, although the good side can’t be enough excuse for the bad side” Damien enlightened. “So there is no one working to stop the WIC once and for all? All they are doing is managing them?” Ryoka asked getting irritated. “Stopping the WIC is in no way a possible task as of yet, but then, who know who will rise up to take up such a challenge” Damien said with an underlay of humor to his words. Ryoka on the other hand though saw nothing funny in it, deep down, she made a decision, after meeting up with her father, no more running, at least by now, all those he had helped out should be a good number already, it was high time someone took the fight back to the WIC. Before then though, she needed to know a whole lot, now she was really ready to learn so she asked Damien for a more detailed explanation on the activities of the WIC. “The WIC are into everything, politics, forces, manufacturing, consumables, tech most especially, they really prioritized tech, the are controlling the world from the shadows and are directly responsible for any fall or rise of any economy or even nation” Damien explained in earnest. “It was a huge slap to their face when they discovered the Edrian race, on their very own continent as it had been for ages, without them knowing a thing, quickly they discovered that the Eldrians posed a huge threat to not just them but then the world as a whole, hence why they took the step to eradicate them which turned into another thing entirely” Damien said. “Wickedness, plain and simple” Ryoka accused “A race that had been around for so long, living in peace, minding their own, and all of a sudden you notice them and decide to wipe them all out?” she said unbelievably, shaking her head. “Well they hadn’t entirely been on their own, some chose to mingle with humans rather than stay on their continent, living a live of secrecy and hidden identity, and also amongst those was the one who had caused the great London fire and some other disasters that had been thought natural, so they aren’t all without blemish” Damien corrected. Ryoka looked at Damien for a few seconds then piped “Who are you really supporting? Us or them?!” Damien chuckled at that “Well it is not really a thing of supporting one side or the other, it is just a thing of what is right and just” he said in response to her. “Ok fine, but then, if they wanted to eradicate dragons, why create the new generation which ultimately led to the creation of the special generation as well?” Ryoka asked. “What does any leader want? Control, and how does he get it? Power, and how does the power flow? Soldiers, warriors, armies. For the WIC it was as simply as weaponizing the dragon race and turning them into their own personal army” Damien answered. Ryoka found reason with what he said “So you were saying something about the hierarchy of the bew generation dragons then? How are they structured?” Ryoka asked. “The diamond-backs being the most powerful are the generals and captains, team or squad leaders at worse, then the bronze-backs are your everyday soldiers, the body of the force, the platinum-backs are smaller in size compared to the first two, so they are more into the tactical aspects, the wysterns are even smaller, more agile, faster, more precise and even deadlier, they are used mainly as assassins, then there are the brownians, as dragons they are pretty much useless, they have smaller wings and can hardly fly, few ever does, their bodies are usually disproportioned, so they are just bulky, but because of their huge size as well, as big as bronze-backs, they are useful for workloads, grunt works, heavy lifting and so on, they are mainly just used as workers” he explained. Ryoka nodded slowly, she was thinking of her father, he must have definitely been able to take that one soldier, so why wasn’t he with them yet? Or was he trying to get some things done against the WIC instead? Or trying to just get them off their trail? Her thoughts kept swirling about and about on the many possibilities that could be delaying her father. “Uhm, Damien, are we almost there?” She suddenly asked and her voice showed a bit of panic. “We’ll soon be, why though? Damien asked wondering what was suddenly getting her worked up. Then she pointed to the rearview mirror and at first he didn’t see anything but then he saw a whit van not unlike the one Ryoka had razed weaving in and out if the traffic. “We are being followed” Ryoka said. “No, no, they do not know, I know of the maneuver they just did, all they have is our general direction, they are still searching for us, don’t worry, we’ll lose them in the next intersection” Damien saud reassuringly to her. Like he said, he took the next intersection and rested the car under a bridge for a while. “Ok where are we actually going?” Ryoka asked in a whisper. “Check your pack” Damien answered her and as she did, she found passports and cash and a plane ticket to none other than… “Japan?!” Ryoka gasped aloud, the last time she was there was a very little girl of about five years old, Japan is her home, she grew up there as well (till she was five at least). She could almost cry at the joy of going back to her home country and hometown. “We are headed to the airport ma’am, we are too hot here and leaving the country is the best bet for us right now, so I thought going back home would be a breath of something good” he said considerably.
