Seemingly sympathetic, Axel reached across the table and patted Ainsley’s shoulder. “Count your blessings, Ains,” he said. “At least you can say you have a boyfriend.”
“Hear, hear,” Haya said with pretend bitterness.
That earned them a joking frown of disgust from Remi. “Is that really what’s most important right now?”
Axel replied loftily, “Well, what else can be more important?”
Remi laughed and shook her head. “You guys are hopeless.”
While her friends continued to banter, Ainsley fell silent in thought. She knew Axel was mostly joking, but she couldn’t help but feel he was making as much sense as Remi did.
