Chapter 8

1753 Words
“Mom, that was unnecessary. Jake is my friend, and he is the only friend I have made in school. You didn’t have to be severe on him. He is a good guy, Mom.” Abby said as soon as her mom fastened her seatbelt. Emma stared at her daughter for a few seconds, shook her head, and started the ignition. “When I look at you, I see a very innocent girl. Let me talk to you like a mother, and not just a mother, but a grown-up. Men will never change, and they start from a tender age. Just like Jake and the other hooligan, you came home the other day. And I am not being judgmental, but I want you to be careful about who you hang out with.” She spoke with finality, and Abby shrugged. “Okay, Mom. I just wanted you to know that Jake is a good boy and the only friend I have in school.” “I know but until you are done with your detention and, once, I am sure you have learned your lesson, I will let you go for that dinner. But I wanted to ask you something. I hope you will not be offended.” She asked as she started the car and slowly drove out of the school’s compound. “Okay, I hope it is not something offensive.” “No, not really. You have been here for only four days, and you are already building trust with male friends, and you are ready to go over for dinner?” Emma asked, and Abby nodded several times. She knew it was a tricky question, and she needed to think about it before she responded. “Mom, I don’t understand your question.” “The question was simple, Abby. I have taught you countless times that trust is a five-letter word but paramount. You don’t trust anyone in a matter of days. Be cautious, and be careful. Don’t fall for any traps. I believe I have taught you better than that. I expect you to be conversant with what I taught you. Don’t let me down.” She said as she drove at a moderate speed. Abby knew what her mom meant. She didn't trust anyone from her school, not yet, but she had to make friends to gain their trust and probably see if it was mutual. When they got home, They were busy preparing dinner and doing house chores around the house. “Mom, can I at least use my phone for research? I have a lot of homework that needs research.” Abby asked her mom later. “No, I know the game you are playing. You can use my work laptop, and don’t do anything stupid because I will find out. You have thirty minutes.” She said, handing her work laptop to her. Abby mumbled a thank you before she took it and dived into her homework. Elsewhere, Lucas was having a hard time concentrating on his food. His father noticed his mood and decided to ask him what the problem was. “You have been staring at your food for almost twenty minutes. Are you sure you are, okay?” Max asked. “Yes Dad, just a little distracted but I am okay. You were saying something?” “No. I just wanted to know if you are okay because you have barely touched your food. I will be at my studies in case you need anything, and don’t stay out too late.” “Okay, Dad. Can I ask for a favor?” “Yes, sure. What is it?” “My car. I know you said I should service it with my allowance, but I got in a mini-accident and scratched the car. I went to the mechanic to see if it could be repainted but it was too expensive. So, can I please use the other car while I get some money to repair my car?” “Okay. Is that the reason you didn’t touch your food?” he asked, rather surprised. “Yes, Dad. It kept bothering me.” “You don’t have to worry about that. I will ask David to make sure your car is in service before next week, and you can always ask me anything. I am your father, and you are my only child. You are the reason I work so hard to give you a better life. I just wish your mom stayed longer with me. We will be a family right now.” “It is okay, Dad. Thank you, and don’t worry about Mom. She chose to walk away and left us; I don’t want to talk about her.” “Okay, you know where the keys are. Just make sure you don’t stay out too late.” “Okay, goodnight, Dad.” Lucas and his father had been by each other’s side ever since his mom left them and got married to Max’s boss. His efforts to win her back were futile as she had already filed for divorce, and planned a wedding with his body. Max was devastated and heartbroken. He was a single father for that part of Lucas’ life and that is why, when he got the chance to change his life for the better, he took it with both arms and swore to protect his son and give him nothing but the best life. After Lucas was done with his dinner, he walked to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of wine before he walked back to the living room and plopped himself on the couch. He watched for a few minutes before Gina walked in to say goodnight. She was the closest thing to a mother for Lucas, as she had been taking care of him ever since his mom left. She had been with his family for almost eight years and had been Lucas’ nanny. When his father got a multimillion-dollar deal in North Carolina, he didn’t want to change any of his nannies, so, he asked Gina if she could go with them and, of course, she agreed. Max paid for his child’s school fees until they both graduated from high school and went to college. Her daughter was working as a nurse in the UK while her son enlisted in the army. She chose to stay with Max and his son since her kids were all grown up and didn’t depend on her anymore. “You should go to bed, Lucas.” Gina urged Lucas, who was already dozing off on the couch. “Yeah, thank you, Gina. Today’s practice was so intense. We have our semifinals coming up and the couch is training us vigorously.” Lucas explained, standing up from the couch, he stretched and yawned. “I understand, you should get some sleep then. I will take it from here.” She said, referring to the dishes in the sink. Lucas nodded and said goodnight, then walked to his room. Immediately, he slumped himself on the bed, sleep caught up with him and he was snoring a few minutes later. The following morning, he was woken up by his alarm ringing. He snoozed it and went back to sleep, but when it rang again, he was forced to wake up. School for Lucas was not necessary, but his father thought otherwise. For him to run his father’s companies and businesses. He had to at least have a college degree and background information on what he had to do. “Your father went to work early. He won’t be back until Monday. But he left me something for you, the keys to the other car, and a warning; no parties until he comes back.” Gina said and Lucas chuckled. He knew he had the house to himself for the whole weekend because his father was not around and Gina was traveling to see her daughter. “We both know that fell on deaf ears. I will see you in the evening, Gina,” he said as he took the car keys from her and picked up her backpack. “I won’t be there, that is why I wanted to say goodbye to you. My plane leaves at 3.” She said excitedly. “You seem happy. How long since you saw her?” he asked. “It has been eight months, and she just gave birth to a baby girl last week. I am a grandmother now.” She added, and Lucas smiled. Reached for his pockets and retrieved six hundred dollars. “I know it is not much, but get her something for the baby. I knew I would get you something when I got back from school.” He offered and Gina shook her head. “No, I can’t take this from you, I will have to respectfully decline your offer, but I will pass my regards to her.” “You know this is nothing. Jessy took care of me sometimes when you. She is family, and you are family. Just take it and get her something.” He spoke. “Okay, but your father already gave me something.” “That is from him and this is from me. Take care Gina, and have a safe flight. Just don’t tell Dad, I hosted a party here. He will cut down on my allowances.” He said, and she laughed. “You go to school and drive safely. I will remember to pass your reputes to Jessy.” She said, and Lucas nodded and then left the house. He walked to the Ranger rover and beamed before he got in, “Now this is what we call a car. Dad is going to be pissed when he learns I lied to him about my car, but he will be over it soon.” He muffled as he turned on the ignition and the engine revved, just as he drove out of the compound. As he was about to get to school, he got a call from his father. “Hey, Dad. What’s up?” “Nothing, I just got a call from David, there was nothing wrong with the car.” “Maybe they didn’t check well.” “I know you just wanted to drive the new car but I will deal with that when I come back from my business trip. You and I have to talk.” He said and hung up.
