The students of Parkhurst High School were chitchatting, resting on the benches and some in small clusters cracking jokes and telling stories about their weekend plans.
Abby was chatting with Jake next to his car. Her mom went to work early, so she was forced to go to school early.
A few meters away from them, there was a group of boys. The basketball team was cracking and making jokes, loudly as usual.
A few minutes later, Lucas pulled up in his new, sleek Range Rover. Everyone from his group of friends cheered him up as he parked the car, and got out flashing the inside of the car, boasting about his new ride.
“Man, when did this get in?” Ryan asked as he got in, and the rest sprung into the car, trying to fit in.
“Get out of the car. Class is about to start and I don’t have money to repaint the car.” He said playfully and his teammates laughed it off.
Lucas was always the centre of attention. As the captain of his basketball team, he was a popular guy in both senior and junior high classes. As a student from a rich family and a father as an investor in the school, he had nothing much to lose. Everything came easy for him; he was made the captain of the basketball team and he was one of the members of the student council.
With girls always hanging around him, and being the centre of attention, he had a catch, and he was always rooted and sandwiched between girls. Attention from the cheerleaders, and he had dated at least half of the hottest girls in his class. The whole school knew him as a playboy, with numerous short strings of relationships, but he was still being compared to other boys around him. Most of the girls wanted a perfect boyfriend, like Lucas, who was rich, had good looks, and was popular.
When the bell rang for class, students dispersed, heading back to class, and chatting in small groups while they headed to class. Lucas was in high spirits, he wanted to hold a party later in the day, so when he spotted Abby in the hallway, he quickly walked up to her.
“Are you trying to dodge me?” he asked in a low husky voice, and Abby stopped in her tracks. She was surprised to see him next to her.
“No, I just got here and the bell rang. Why would I avoid you?” She asked obliviously.
“For starters, you returned the phone I gave you, and you haven’t been answering my texts.”
“That is because I am still grounded and in detention. I don’t have my phone with me. That is the reason I didn’t reply to any of your messages.” She said without budging, and Lucas sighed.
“Okay, I know I will be sort of busy later in the day. I have swimming practice, and basketball training later in the day. So, I wanted to invite you to a party at my house.”
“I have never been to a party before and as much as I would love to come to your party and see how all that goes, I am still grounded and in detention. I don’t want to cause more problems for myself. I hope you understand that.” She said dismissively.
“Okay, I thought about it before I even asked you. I know you are grounded, but high school is no drama unless you break some rules. I will pick you up at twelve, and take you home before your mom wakes up.” He said daringly.
“You are a troublemaker, and I don’t want to be in that ship when it sinks, thanks to the thought though.”
“Okay, I know you are afraid of what your mom would do to you, but what is the worst that could happen? She won’t kill you, and I have a way of sneaking you out and back into the house. Just be ready by twelve, and keep your window open. Scratch that, take this burner phone, I will text you once I am at your place, and don’t let me down. I don’t like that,” he said as he stuffed the phone in her hand and walked away.
The rest of the day was uneasy for Abby. She didn’t know if she was to accept the invitation to Lucas’ house or not. And, he knew it was a tough decision to make, he didn’t want to involve Jake because he knew he would be against it.
The burner phone was on silent, just to make sure her mom didn’t rummage through her backpack and find it. At games, Jake left to go to his tennis club. Abby hadn’t signed up for any games and was still reconsidering her choices.
She went over to the swimming pool to see how Lucas was doing. He was the only one around since he was practising for his finals at the championship.
“Hey, glad you made it here. I am still here. How are you? You are up for tonight?”
“That is what I wanted to talk to you about. I haven’t signed up for extracurricular activities, but I want to meet the games teacher next week for advice on what fits me. But I wanted to humbly decline your offer to your party. I know I have never been out to a party and I don’t want my first time to be when I am grounded or in detention. It will only worsen the situation.” She replied and Lucas chuckled.
He walked out of the water, his hair dripping wet, glistening skin, and a confident aura that made the other girls passing by turn their heads. He got those tiny and shiny droplets of water dripping down his chiselled chest, making his muckles look even more defined. Abby was staring at him, admiring his abs, but was cut short by his cough.
“Eyes on me, Abigail. I know I look good, but you don’t have to eat me out like that. You were saying?” He asked with a contagious smile, his sparkling with a sense of adventure. He picked up the towel, wiped himself dry, and sat next to Abby on the bench.
The other girls snorted and others giggled while describing Abby, while others disregarded her presence with him. “What does he even see in her?” one of the jealous girls asked.
“Oh sorry, I couldn’t cover my eyes. I said I can’t come to your party tonight.” She said, rather embarrassed that she was caught checking him out.
“I understand, but don’t worry, I might have been reckless the first time, but I won’t let anything happen to you. Don’t think so hard about what might happen, just throw caution to the wind, and think about the fun you will have. Just keep the phone on in case you change your mind, and about your game, try cricket. I think it suits you.” He suggested.
A few minutes after Lucas walked away, a group of cheerleaders appeared. They were just from their practice, and their leader, Stephanie, thought it would be fun if they tried making fun of her before they went back to class.
“So, what were you two talking about? You know Lucas is not your class. You are just new here and already making enemies,” Stephanie the leader asked, as the rest laughed at her.
“Okay, and what makes you think I have anything I can hold him with? He approached me in the first place, and if you were so up to terms with him, you wouldn’t be here attacking me, but you would be on his lap massaging his abs, don’t you think?” Abby asked confidently, and some of the girls giggled.
“You guys shut the f**k up. Abby, this is my last warning to you. Stay away from Lucas.”
“Or else what, Steph? You are pretty, you have a killer body, you are the leader of the cheerleading group and you feel threatened by someone like me? Someone with no bravery, no killer body, and no friends. You need help.” She said with a smirk.
“You have a brave mouth, I see, but I am not yet done with you. Stay the hell away from him or you will have to deal with me, Abby!”
“Just get a life, ask him out on a date, or kiss him. I promise he loves sluts who throw themselves at him, and I am sure he will give you the chance to use you and dump you, but if you don’t mind, I would like to go back to class.” She said, feeling herself.
Stepanie was more than embarrassed but she wore a brave face, “I guess I won’t have to deal with you since you won’t be at the party.” She said boastfully.
“I think you are over yourself, Steph. He invited me personally, and you know what? He will pick me up from my place. I hope to see you there so I can see the look on your face when we walk in together. I will see you at the party, Stephanie.” She said and walked away, leaving her mouth agape.
The challenge posed by Stephanie made Abby change her mind about going to Lucas’ party. At the end of the day, she had made up her mind to go to the party, so, she met up with Lucas. He was walking to the changing rooms.
“Hey Lucas, I hope I am not bothering you. I just wanted you to know that I changed my mind and I am coming to the party. Are you still picking me up?” She asked, fidgeting and biting on her lips, hoping he wouldn’t change his mind.
“Oh yeah, glad to know you changed your mind. I can’t wait to walk you through this new phase, I will hit you up when I am on my way to pick you up.” He said excitedly and ran up to meet his friends who were up ahead.
“What was that about?” Jake asked as he walked up to her.
“Nothing, just catching up, I will see you on Monday, I have to go,” Abby said dismissively and quickly walked away.
