Granny froze, and I could see her formulating a reply, while still being respectful.
Some would see that question as being a surprise at how the day had gone so far. But he was pointing out the obvious.
He was a retired cop who spent his career seeing and dealing with the worst of humanity. He sees certain behaviors and attributes them to his knowledge of what to look out for, be wary of.
His daughters and grandchildren are now his main priority, so he needs to make sure they will be safe, cared for, protected, especially Annie because of what she has been through.
