Chapter 20 I parked the Jetta a few doors down from Lei’s place and turned the engine off. In the passenger seat, Lei was silent, and for the first time since we’d met, his silence weighted on me. He was shutting me out again and my patience was wearing thin, but tonight wasn’t the night to lose control of my emotions. He needed my understanding more than ever. Still, I’d been so conciliatory with him, dedicated and present, and all I wanted from him were a few words of reassurance. Once again, Lei was shut away in his tomb of hurt, blind and deaf to my desires. I unfastened my seat belt and opened the car door, but Lei put a hand on my arm. “Take my car home tonight,” he said in an even voice. “I don’t need it tomorrow, anyway.” This meant he wasn’t planning on inviting me in tonight.
