“She’s a little younger than me, and I didn’t want to scare her off by bringing her over here,” I finished explaining, and I hated myself. Eugene looked surprised, but Nathan threw me a thumbs-up. My grandfather looked like he didn’t quite believe me, but my father reacted positively.
“Well, then, that is splendid news, Erik. We are happy for you and…?”
“Sylvia,” I repeated her name.
“Right, we are happy for you and Sylvia,” he said as he came over and shook my hand. I hated lying to him, but when he gave my hand a hard squeeze, I knew that he doubted me. I would have to do some explaining and soon.
“Are you boys done? Dinner is about to be served,” we all looked over to see my mother standing just outside of the room. “Five minutes,” she added, before she disappeared.
