Peter's pov
The smell of antiseptic was so f*****g suffocating.
I stood outside the emergency room with my hands balled into fists so tightly that my nails dug into my palms.
Cerene was still inside, and every second that passed without a doctor coming out made the anger inside me spread like poison through my veins.
I couldn't stop seeing my own wife as a villainess.
How could she do something so heartless?
The woman I had once believed was gentle had looked at Cerene with nothing but hatred. If anything happened to Cerene or the baby she was carrying, I would never forgive Caroline.
Never.
The emergency room doors slid open, and a familiar figure walked into the corridor wearing a white coat.
“Alex.“
The moment I saw him, something inside me snapped.
Without giving myself time to think, I stormed toward him.
He barely had time to look up.
"Peter?" he said, confusion flashing across his face.
I grabbed the front of his white coat with both hands and slammed him against the wall with enough force to make a loud bang echo through the hallway.
A nurse screamed. “Ah!“
Someone shouted my name. “Mr Lockwood!“
I didn't care.
My face was inches from his, and I tightened my grip until the fabric of his coat wrinkled beneath my fists.
"Where is she?" I growled, my voice shaking with rage. "Where the hell is Caroline?"
Alex stared at me, stunned.
"What are you talking about?" Alex asked, still trying to process what had just happened.
"Don't insult my intelligence!" I shouted, jerking him forward before shoving him back against the wall again. "I've seen the way you look at her. I've seen you hovering around her every chance you get, acting like her knight in shining armor. Don't tell me you don't know where she is. You're hiding her, aren't you?"
His brows drew together.
"I don't know where Caroline is," Alex answered firmly.
I laughed, but there wasn't a trace of humor in it.
"You expect me to believe that?" I asked, my grip tightening even more. "The woman nearly kills Cerene, disappears without a trace, and somehow her precious doctor friend knows absolutely nothing? Do you think I'm that stupid?"
"I said I don't know where she is," Alex repeated, his voice calm despite the position he was in.
"You've always been interested in her," I snapped. "Every time she was around, you found an excuse to be there too. You thought I didn't notice? You thought I was blind?"
Alex's jaw tightened.
"I cared about her because someone had to," he replied.
Those words hit me like gasoline on a fire.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" I demanded, shoving him so hard that the back of his head knocked against the wall.
"It means exactly what you think it means," Alex said, refusing to look away. "You were too busy humiliating Caroline to notice when she was falling apart."
My blood boiled.
I raised my fist.
Several nurses rushed forward in panic.
"Doctor Alex!"
"Sir, please stop!"
One security guard started running toward us.
Alex didn't even flinch.
"I don't know where Caroline is," he said again. "Believe me or don't. I haven't seen her since she left with you. I didn't help her disappear, and if you're looking for someone to blame because Cerene got hurt, you've grabbed the wrong person."
I stared into his eyes, searching for the slightest sign that he was lying.
There wasn't one.
That only made me angrier.
With a rough shove, I threw him away from me. He stumbled a few steps before catching his balance, straightening his white coat without taking his eyes off me.
"If I find out you've lied to me..." I said, pointing a finger directly at him, "I'll make sure you lose more than your job. Do you understand me? I'll destroy everything you have."
Alex let out a slow breath.
"You should spend this energy praying Cerene recovers instead of chasing Caroline," he said quietly. "Because if Caroline truly did what you're accusing her of, the police will find her. But if she didn't..." He paused, disappointment filling his eyes. "Then you're about to make the biggest mistake of your life."
I scoffed.
"There is no mistake," I said coldly. "Caroline crossed a line she can never come back from."
Without waiting for another word, I turned around and walked back toward the emergency room, my heart pounding with fury. As far as I was concerned, it didn't matter where Caroline had run to.
I would find her. And when I did, she would answer for what she had done.
But why was I having a dreadful feeling in my chest? Something like care and worry for the same woman I was supposed to hate right now.
I brushed it off before I could hypnotize myself into caring for that ungrateful woman.
