Nessa felt the ache in her head become more intense as she followed Jordan in the dark forest. Her ears caught every little moment that occurred around them; her eyes saw tiny worms crawling on the ground that she would’ve otherwise missed. She heard the crash of waves against rocks even though they were nowhere close to any of the beaches. Jordan’s mom had walked in just before they were leaving, warning them to not wander in the dark. But they had sneaked out anyway, carrying along with them some of the knives displayed on the wall. By now, Nessa assumed that everyone was aware of what had happened with Rachel.
