Visit from the Past

Mary POV It was Friday evening and I was back in the kitchen with Irma. The week had gone by as quickly as the previous one. After the incident on Sunday, I had gone back into the dining room with some caution. Irma had always been with me and usually Luna Annie too, which still surprised me. After all, I wasn't really one of them. Which of course depends on your point of view, in the eyes of the pack I belonged to Luna, as her property. Irma had explained to me that because of my status, I belonged to the pack like every other member, and to not feel left out. My status, the property of Luna and the Alpha. I didn't like the idea, but as long as it kept me safe, I didn't tought about it to much. No one had said anything against me since the incident on Sunday. On the contrary, everyone was always very friendly to me. In the evening, Irma's mate Tim usually sat with us. He was very nice and you could see straight away that he adored Irma and kissed the ground she walked on. He had explained to me that this behavior was normal among werewolves, when they found their fated mates. Mates were deeply bonded and loved each other unconditionally. It was hard for me to imagine trusting and loving each other so strong and sincere from the start. For the werewolves, it was the most natural thing in the world. They knew that one day they would find their mates, the perfecr match and then there would exist only that person for them. As always, my heart tightened at that thought. I had spent the last 27 years alone. I was avoided at the orphanage and at the city among the Humans too. That was the biggest reason for me, wanting to pack my things and travel to the other side of the world, after the end of my one-year contract at the pack house. I had seen a beautiful little island that just looked like everything I wished for. It hat 3 Raindays per Year, it was always sunny but not to hot and the beach looked amazing. On my last day here, I would take my suitcase to the airport and fly there. I had told Irma about my plans this week, and that was also the topic of our conversation that evening. "Aren't you going to miss it here?" "Irma. I didn't grow up like you. I never had a home here or a family like you. Of course it's nice here. I love the forest and the plants, but there are other places in the world like this. Some of theme even have a beach." Irma looked at me sadly, she couldn't understand why I wanted to leave. She had grown up here and would never leave the pack territory. "But you grew up here. And you're part of the pack now. Everyone's been nice to you all week. What happened on Sunday with Janelle was really an exception and won't happen again." "I'm part of the pack because I belong to the Luna and the Alpha. That's not quite in line with my human morals. And it's not the same as yours either. I never belonged to the kids at the orphanage or with the human kids at school. It's not different here. I'm tolerated as long as I work here. As soon as my contract expires, I won't belong here at the pack anymore." I sighed at the look of dismay on Irma's face. "It's okay Irma. I'll build a new life for myself and won't be the outsider anymore. I will send you a postcard from there I promise." And maybe I would fall in love and start a family. I said that in my mind, it was something I wasn't ready to share with Irma yet. "I understand what you're saying. It just makes me so sad because I could never imagine leaving the pack." I took a breath to tell her that we had a completely different relationship with the pack. But Irma raised her hand to silence me. "I know. You don't have a bond with the pack like I do. So lets change the discussion. Where would you like to go?" "Oh, there's a small Island group in Southeast Asia. When I saw pictures of it at school, I couldn't get it out of my head. I've always imagined traveling there one day." When we had geography lessons, I was fascinated by all these foreign places. But no place had taken my Interest like these small islands in South East Asia. Over the years, I had repeatedly searched for this place on the internet and looked at pictures of the Island. I had even started to learn the language so that I could live there one day. "Sounds nice, what do you want to do there?" "I don't know. I can cook and bake and speak a bit of the local language. Maybe I could work at a hotel. First of all, I want to travel there and see the island. Then I'll decide whether I want to settle there or not." Irma looked at me sadly, there were few reasons for werewolves to leave the pack. There were really only two, one was if you were cast out and became a Rouge, which was rare, according to Irma. The second was if you found your mate in another pack. One of the two mates then changes his pack. The Luna was from another pack and had switched to this pack for her mate, the Alpha. She had left her whole family. She had told me one afternoon when she had taken me for a walk. "Hey. I'm here for almost another year. By the time the year is up, I'll be getting on your nerves so much that you'll be glad when I pack my things and leave." I tried to cheer Irma up. "We werewolves have a very high tolerance for annoyance." We got dinner ready and took everything into the dining room. After we had tidied up the kitchen, we sat down to eat with Luna Annie at one of the large dining tables. Luna Annie was very excited. Tomorrow the Alpha would be back after his two-week absence. During the meal, Luna Annie told me lots of funny stories from the pack, about her, Irma, the Alpha and the Beta. I laughed so much that for the first time since my arrival, I was completely relaxed in the large dining room. "Josh had just run away from the Instructor and my mate was rolling on the floor laughing. The instructor and also the former alpha chased him all over the ground." Luna Annie had just finished one of the stories about the beta, his name was Josh or something like that. We all laughed, but my laughter died when I saw who was approaching our table. Tom.
