Mary POV To my surprise, I saw Luna Annie in an animated conversation with Irma. When I entered the kitchen, they looked at me and fell silent. "Mary, how are you? Your first week is over." Luna Annie said cheerfully. "Thanks, I'm fine, it's been a busy week with lots of new things. But I've had a lot of fun learning everything. I just hope I haven't forgotten any rules and made a fool of myself, like I do all the time with Irma," I said with a slight smile. Irma laughed out loud and told Luna what I had asked her that morning. Both women laughed while I turned my attention to the food. I took four of my home-baked loaves of bread out of the oven and placed them on a board. "Mary, shall we eat together in the dining room today?" Luna Annie asked me. I looked at her startled, the Luna wanted to eat with me? After the alpha, she was the most important person in the pack. "Uhh, you want to eat with me? Don't you have a special status and normally eat at your own table?" "What's your idea of me? I'm not a queen. I usually eat in the dining room or on our floor when I'd rather be alone with my mate." "Sorry. That's what I meant about embarrassing myself, I know nothing about pack life." "You will learn. The more you come into contact with the pack. I thought you might find it easier to eat with the pack for the first time with Irma and me." "All right," I finally said. Luna Annie beamed at me. "Great. You'll see, everyone will be fine and maybe you'll have some fun too." I laughed, sure if I had been around people maybe. "I have to get everything ready first." With that I turned away and got to work. Irma wanted to help me but I swarmed her so that she could continue her conversation with the Luna. This gave me some time to get myself ready. All too soon it was 6 p.m. and everything was done. Irma and Luna Annie took me for a walk around the garden before we finally sat down in the dining room. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, but nobody said anything. On the contrary, I even got some really nice compliments about the food or my bread. We were eating when Luna Annie's cell phone rang, she got up and left the room while she answered her phone. "Irma, can I ask you something?" "Sure." "Do you all have cell phones?" Irma looked at me quizzically. "Yes, most of us have one, why do you ask?" "I thought you could communicate with each other in your heads. Sorry, I don't want to be intrusive." Irma laughed out loud and drew a few glances at us, which made me very uncomfortable. "I see. Yes, we can communicate with each other via mind link, within the pack anyway. But the link only extends a little further than our borders. Alpha Marc is further away from us at the moment, so they have to use the phone." "Ah ok." I said, still embarrassed by the stares that were still on us. "Mary, I'm sorry I laughed. I always forget that you don't know some things that are completely normal to me. Is there anything else you want to know?" I looked into Irma's eyes and saw nothing but sincerity in them, she really wanted to answer my questions. "What was it like when you met your mate?" Irma's eyes began to sparkle. "I had just turned 18 and had shifted for the first time. When I woke up the next morning, I could feel my wolf, who was very excited. So I went outside and walked around aimlessly. When I got to the training area, I felt it. It felt like the earth stopped moving. We looked into each other's eyes and knew we were mates. It's difficult to explain, it was, or still is an attraction like nothing I had known before. On top of that, our mates smells special to us." "Like what?" "Well that depends, for me my mate smells like our forest and spring flowers." "Can you smell better than me?" "Werewolves have more developed senses than humans, so yes I think so." "Then you've never burned anything?" "No." Irma laughed again as she answered me. "That's handy." "IHHHHHHH! What is a Human doing here?" someone shouted loudly behind me. I turned around and saw two women coming towards me. One of them had her face contorted into a grimace and was looking at me in shock. She had long blonde hair and was wearing jeans with a crop top. When she saw me looking at her, she came stomping towards me. "What are you doing here? You have no right to sit here. Go away!" she shouted at me. "Janelle, Mary is the new cook, she belongs to the Luna and the Alpha, she has every right to sit here." Irma stood up for me. "NO! I will not eat with a human here. That's unacceptable!" "Then you can eat outside Janelle!" behind the woman, who obviously was called Janelle, Luna Annie had appeared, her face contorted with anger. "Luna... I." Luna Annie stood in front of her and interrupted her immediately. "Mary is under my protection and you will show her the same respect as you would show me or the others in the pack! She is human and grew up knowing about us. If I hear anything so disrespectful towards Mary from your mouth again, there will be consequences. Have I made myself clear?" Janelle whimpered in response and ran out of the room. I had goose bumps, I had never seen Luna Annie so angry. She had growled at the woman and bared her teeth. Like an animal and her Aura was almost been tangible. I swallowed hard as she sat back down at the table with us. "Sorry Mary, Opinions like that are rare in the pack. I shouldn't have left you alone." Luna Annie looked completely relaxed again as she spoke to me. "It's okay." I had been the outsider all my life, it was nothing new for me not to belong. At least I had someone here who stood up for me, so at least I wasn't bullied like I had been as a child. We talked for a while before I excused myself and went to my room.
