I wake up the next morning in my own bed. Was it Daddy who carried me to my room after I fell asleep? Remembering all that happened yesterday makes me feel happy again. Least until I go into the kitchen. "Where"s my momma and daddy?" I ask my auntie, who is in her usual place at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and reading scriptures. "Gone." "Where?" "Don"t know." "When are they coming back?" Willa sighs and turns away from reading to face me. "Can"t say, honey. No way to know, just like when they showed up here all unexpected." She goes on, "There"s orange juice in the icebox. How about I fix up some flapjacks before you get off to school? I"m hankering for some myself." "Okay," I mutter. I go pour myself a glass of juice, searching out the window just in case they haven"t left
