Heart In The Right Place

Roxie was livid as Stephan yet again dealt out punishment for her “reckless behavior and disobedience.” Or so he called it. She called it saving her friend’s life, even if it means going against him. “You let Jasper get turned by those things and none of you are doing a damn thing!” She yelled interrupting his sermon. The pack watched Stephan draw himself to height in the small living room. His presence dominating theirs making them naturally submit to him. “Let me be clear one last time,” Stephan boomed in a warning tone over them all, “Jasper Wynter’s grandfather made a deal with my grandfather decades ago. They can mate on these lands if the person is willing, same with being turned. You can question his choice in partner all you want, but Jasper Wynter has made his decision, and he has become one of them.” Looking at Davon and Yasmine, Stephan admitted, “He’s still however Yasmine’s son. And while he’s agreed not to come to the reservation if it’s going to be an issue, I’m saying it won’t be one. Correct?” The wolves agreed and Yasmine thanked them, but Roxie stood stubborn with her jaw clenched. Stephan stood over her and commanded she meet his eye, and when she did his gold eyes seared into hers. “I know you cared for him,” Stephan rumbled in his deep voice, “But you can’t interfere with a true mating. And he’s already been turned, there’s NOTHING you can do.” Roxie growled as she reminded him, “I can make who did it, pay for it.” Stephan’s face became dangerous as he reminded her, “Sure, if you were talking about the right vampires. And you’re not, you’re talking about his mate and her family.”  Nodding like it was obvious, Roxie tried to convince him, “Because they brought those psychos here, that vamp b***h got her fangs into him and now he’s dead. And it’s because he was around her!” Stephan blew out a deep breath, “I know it’s easier to turn your rage of the situation on to someone else, even the undeserving. But I won’t let you attack them.” Before Roxie could protest, Stephan growled, “If you do, you will be prosecuted by the elders and held accountable for your actions. Because pure intentions or not, you’re putting the pack in danger. And we will not go to war with a family over a crush.” Roxie stood scrubbed raw as she cried. Stephan tried to soften his approach, but Roxie bolted from the room. She ran for ten minutes to the opposite side of the reservation. Standing in the woods pacing and crying, Roxie roared as she sobbed out. She couldn’t stomach this, any of it. Suddenly her friend was there, and Lucy pulled her into a hug. Lucy didn’t need to say a word, she just held Roxie until her pain was numb and she was all cried out. But her mind was still made up.
