Jasper felt odd going back to school, as he walked in the halls, he could suddenly hear everything and everyone. No matter what they were talking about. “Ugh I wish we didn’t have that test in Ms. Brad’s class. I’d so skip to go over Andrew’s.” Jackie Lowe was saying.
Her friends all agreeing as their racing heartbeats told him they were just wanting her approval. Breezing past them, Jasper trained himself not to look when Jackie noticed him. “And Jasper Wynter has yet again glowed up to be even hotter.” She purred grinning as she observed him.
As he got to his locker, Jasper was sure he’d be cornered by the viper when Alaia appeared. “Long see, no kiss,” She chirped kissing him. Jasper chuckled as Jackie stalked past them with a scoff of disgust and looked at Alaia amused. “Nice one.”
Alaia winked as Stella and AJ came up to them. “Isn’t this the reason you two were both holed up throwing up together in Seattle?” Stella asked waving between them. “Too much in your face?”
AJ laughed as he joked, “Lucky asses got to go to the dispensaries and miss SATs. I want your luck.” Alaia laughed, “Dude we spent the majority of that time sharing a puke bucket and Netflix. The only parts of Seattle we saw were the take out places.”
Scrunching up her nose, Stella cooed sarcastically, “So romantic. But I still can’t believe your parents both let you two leave for Seattle just because you two were sick. Especially you Jas,”
Lying was becoming a second nature for Jasper as he said, “My dad has this big project coming up and couldn’t afford to miss meetings and stuff because he got sick babying me.”
Pretending to look for a book and seeing it in his locker, Jasper continued, “And with a lot of people in Alaia’s house she could have gotten sick, they just told us we could go. Besides it’s not like we’ve never been alone before and none of them know. What was the purpose of everyone getting sick and being miserable with us?”
AJ and Stella agreed that made sense and then caught Jasper up on what they missed. And as they headed to class, they all ran into Paige. Pale, sleep deprived Paige, who looked at Jasper with gaunt eyes, “Hey Jasper can I talk to you for a sec?”
Both Stella and AJ started to protest, but Alaia and Jasper heard the quiver in Paige’s voice. Could see her shivering even as a sweat broke out on her forehead.
“Yeah sure.” He said before squeezing Alaia’s shoulder. He followed her off as Stella whispered to Alaia, “I mean don’t get me wrong, the girl has rotten luck, but I still don’t trust her.” Alaia looked at Stella confused, “What do you mean?”
AJ draped an arm around Stella’s shoulders as he told Alaia, “She got attacked a few nights ago.” Alaia jerked back, “Attacked? By what?” Stella shrugged not knowing as she led them down the hall, “Some kind of animal.”
And the bell rung loudly interrupting any other questions.
