Unfinished Business

904 Words
Paige was sitting outside of her house like always. She didn’t go in until her mom came home, and when her mom did come home, she always made sure to lock her door, and push her dresser behind it. And slept with her stun gun. Rick hadn’t tried anything. Not yet. And she wouldn’t give him the chance. Shaking as the day became a cool evening, Paige’s thin sweater did nothing to keep her warm. The February frost lasting a lot longer than usual had her seeing her breath on the air. She was almost tempted to go into the warm house. But then she thought of all the time Rick’s tried to “accidentally” walked into the bathroom with her. Paling, Paige knew she’d just tough it out. Huffing hot breathe into her hands, Paige balled up to keep warm as she thought of the colleges the counselor had recommended. All of them nice and far away. But also, too expensive.  Paige knew she’d need to work to put herself through school and couldn’t depend on any assistance from her momma. She was too busy taking care of her man child. Rolling her eyes, Paige tried to be positive. Even with her being in rehab she’d kept up with her grades and assignments. Even with her buddying addiction to pain pills, Paige had kept up her grades. She’d go cold turkey for a day or two to do her work and even though those days sucked, and it’d been hard to focus she’d done it. It was as if she knew then she’d come out of the stupid rebellious action and want a real life. Not become trailer trash with a loser like Donny Shamus. She wanted to be more than what was expected of her. Unfortunately for Paige…she should have gone inside. Because as Donny came out of the shadows, he looked at Paige for a moment in wonder. “Paige?” Paige nearly jumped out of her skin and looked at Donny horrified. Stumbling back from the wooden fence she’d been sitting on, Paige looked at the boy in front of her. Donny looked paler than before, his icy blue eyes now glaciers as his blood hair looked professionally styled. But something was off with him. And it made Paige want to run, but she was frozen. “T-this isn’t possible.” She whispered in disbelief. Cocking his head to the side eerily, Donny smirked, “What is?” Paige shook her head, “You’re dead. They found your body!” Donny laughed, “Yeah I heard. Thing is, I didn’t stay dead.” Paige was confused and scared, but then she blinked and Donny was an inch from her. Snarling in her face, he bared his fangs as his eyes bled red. Paige screamed and fell back and started to run but Donny got in her way and Paige started to cry as he shushed her gently. “Why are you upset? I just want to talk.” Paige looked at Donny sadly, “What do you want to talk about?” Donny looked at Paige and then angrily whispered, “You told a counselor at the center that I r***d you. Why did you say that when you know that’s not true?” Paige sniffled, “D-donny I don’t want to talk about this-.” Before she could move around him, Donny got in her face, “No! I want to know why you had my parents looking at me like I’m so kind of p*****t! Why did you say it!” He roared quaking with fury. Screaming, Paige’s mouth moved on its own, “Because that’s what it felt like! You were pressuring me Donny, and whenever I said no you kept insisting!” Donny growled in disgust at what she was saying, “I didn’t hold a gun to your head and make you f**k me!” Laughing bitterly Paige reminded him, “No you tore at my self-esteem. Called me fat, ugly, worthless. You…you left me at a party where I knew no one and everyone was hopped up on E and Coke and a bunch of other shit.” Paige blew out a breath, “Look Donny, you and I were a toxic mix of two kids dealing with shitty ass home lives. And then we tried to find comfort in doing something that was slowly killing us.” Donny watched as Paige looked him over seeing something was off about him. Shaking her head, Paige whispered, “I don’t know what in the hell you’ve done to yourself. Or if this is some kind of stress dream from SAT prep, but you need to find someone who can help you.” Donny looked at Paige surprised. But he was even more surprised when she whispered, “Find someone who can help you before you hurt someone Donny.” Donny looked at Paige for a moment, and sadly admitted, “I already have.” Paige looked at Donny afraid and he smiled as his fangs flashed in the night sky.
