The next day was rather similar. I took her to school, then went to see Bobbi. The package with Juniper’s present had arrived and we needed to make some plans. Bobbi said we needed to be in church on Sunday. Madeline Shaw was telling people the reason Juniper hadn’t been in church was because she was ashamed to be around good people ever since she became Red’s mistress.
My sisters and the wives of the Cleaners were fighting every rumor they could with what they had. Madeline was spreading them as fast as we were countering them. I had no idea how aggressive rumors could be.
There was no ignoring the gossip. In this town, they think it means your accepting it and the rumor has some truth. We needed to make it stop so there wouldn’t be as much attention on what we were doing.
