CHAPTER 48: BAD BLOOD
David did not ask what happened. After the confrontation, nobody speak. Nobody dare to bring it even. He just left, and everything was back to normal, except that he isn’t as harsh as before.
He cooked, before he left, and Raquel couldn’t be feeling grateful for once. But that doesn’t mean she was already at ease.
Staring at the paper on her hand, she let out a loud sigh, “Am I doing it, right?” She asked herself.
The document she have gotten her hands onto contain the truth. It is her birthplace. Doctor Vergara gave it to her, before he left. He told Raquel that if she wanted the truth, then this place may be the key to every question she seeks.
“But this is what I wanted.” She whispered to herself.
Or more likely she was trying to convince herself to do so.
Her phone rings.
When she saw the name registered on the screen, her face hardened.
It is her mother. The mother she grew up with, who had been feeding lies to Raquel.
The call died down, but when she dialed her number again, Raquel did not budge on her seat. Not even afraid to envisioned her furious eyes, her glare she used to throw at her.
Whenever they beat her countless of times, Raquel would always asked whether they are her real parents, but now…now, she was certain that everything would be clear once the truth unfolded for her.
She needed to go that place to find out who is she, and why did they lie to her.
“I gotta do this.”
Taking bold steps, Raquel grab her keys, and was hoping for the truth. She marched outside. Her eyes have this fiery glint on them. But her steps stopped on the tracks, when she meet with the familiar emerald green orbs on their garage.
“Eliot.”
What is he doing here? She thought.
“What are you doing here?”
“We needed to talk.”
She rolled her eyes at his remark.
“Now, we’re back at being bossy again?” She sarcastically said.. “Why don’t you just turn your back, and leave me alone. Isn’t that what we both wanted?”
“Raquel, please.” He pleaded.
“Leave me alone, Eliot.” Raquel warned him. She picked up her steps and head to her park car, but Eliot was in pursuit.
“I know that I am harsh, I’m sorry—”
“I don’t need your apology, Eliot.” But she did. She wanted to hear it.
“Raquel.” He grabbed her wrist before she could pulled open the front seat of her car. “Just give me a minute, I know that I have been a bastard… I’m just mad, my father…”
“Whom you truly do not care.” Raquel faced him. “Tell me, what are you here for, Eliot?”
“To fix what we have, Raq.”
“Don’t start me with that.” She clenched her jaw. “I’m not buying it anymore.”
“But I love you, Raq.” Eliot looked at her. His eyes this time is far from the expression she saw at the diner. They were bright, genuine as if he was actually telling the truth of his confession to Raquel.
“You didn’t. I told you, you can’t!” Raquel shook her head.
She was in denial, or perhaps… she was afraid to risk, betting her heart in exchange of another excruciating pain again?
“You know that I can’t just do that.” Eliot stalked her closer. Raquel tried to move away, but she was cornered. Behind her was her car, and in front of her was Eliot whose face was an inched apart. Feeling him close, sobered up the loud thumb of her heart. Her chest fluttered.
His hot breathe was fanning across her cheeks. It felt warm, and he smells nice.
“I am crossing the line for you, Raq—”
“I didn’t ask you to, Eliot.” Raquel gulps. “There are lines you should not cross just because you wanted to… I told you that I am married, and what happened, what we are doing was a felony. I cheated from my husband….”
“He couldn’t even act as a husband to you, Raquel.” Recalling David’s mistreatment to her, Eliot felt mad. “But I… I promised that I am not going to hurt you—”
“Which part can’t you understand that I am f*****g married—?!” Raquel scowled at her. “Now, get the hell out of here!”
“Before that, I wanted you to answer my question.”
Raquel tried to push him away, but Eliot did not budge.
“Just stop it, Eliot.” But he pinned both of her hands.
“Just tell me…” Eliot was staring at her intently. “Do you love him? Do you love David?”
“Why does it matter—”
“It matters for me, Raq, whether I should still pursue you or not.” He was speaking with what his heart wanted him to. There’s no running, and pushing away anymore. “Now tell me, and don’t you dare lie, because I am not stupid, you felt for me, didn’t you?”
“Then, if you know the answer, why are you still asking?” Raquel was bold.
Eliot blinks, “You didn’t…”
“Isn’t that what you wanted to hear?” Raquel pursed her lips. “Now get the hell out of my face, before I lose my patience.”
“Wait.” Eliot stopped her.
The anxious look on his eyes fades. Her lips formed in a smile.
“What?”
“Won’t you kiss me—”
“Oh hell no, may I remind you that we are still in David’s house—”
But the moment was cut short.
The gate was automatically pushed open, revealing an uninvited guest.
“s**t!”
At first glance, Raquel knew who owns the car.
It was her mother, and there’s no doubt that she was there with Grace.
“What’s wrong?” Eliot asked her.
“Don’t asked me, but we need to hide.” She lowered herself.
Eliot do the same.
“Who is it?”
“My mother.”
Raquel is not wrong either.. When the car parked, it was her mother accompanied by Grace, who showed up.
She knew that they are up to something.
“Ma!” Grace stomped her feet, annoyed. “Why are we back here again? I thought you hated David now?”
“I did, but I also hated the fact that your sister is ignoring my calls.” Mrs. Roswell sounded furious. “Let’s go, and I’ll teach your sister some lesson.”
Raquel let out a relieved sigh, when her mother did not notice them.
“That was close.” She peered, making sure that the garage is clear, before pulling Eliot with her.
“Where are we going?” Eliot asked, he was confused.
She rolled her eyes, “To your car, and before you ask some questions, I’ll explain it to you after we leave this place.”
What choice does she have than to involve Eliot on her life?
The moment he found her, Raquel knew that he’s in, and there’s no way she can push him away again after her confession.
