CHAPTER 32: THE ONE TO BLAME
Samantha was shaking. She was inside her car, but she wanted to go out and just throw out everything she ate. Fear crept on her arms, while recalling what happened earlier.
She was supposed to meet a friend, when she spot Italia and Gustav being lovey dovey with ech other. Full of jealousy, the envious Samantha was blinded. She didn’t know what she is doing at first until there are series of screams and shouts, yelling from the road.
And that woke her up from what was really happening.
She hit her!
Samantha had hit Italia Mercedes!
“Oh god!” Guilt tripped, she cried.
She isn’t supposed to be the one killing Italia out there! What if the press find out who was the owner of the car? It would certainly ruined her career!
Her teeth chattered. Samantha was freak out, and paranoia began creeping all the way to her skin.. She don’t know what to do.
But only one person came into her mind.
“R—right.” Shaking terribly, she began to di all his number.
It take a couple of rings before the thee person on the next line picked up her call.
“What is it, Sam?” It is Jake and he sounded groggy, as if he had just been woke up fro his sleep.
But that was least of Samantha’s worried for now. She have a bigger problem as of the moment.
“J—jake.” Tears began trailing on her eyes.
Her cheeks are starting to get damp, while her lips quivered.
That caught Jake’s attention. It was far from the Samantha he saw on her condo. It isn’t at anger anymore, but she sounded scared. Anxiety laced her voice as if she is in deep trouble.
“Sam?” Jake asked. “Are you crying? Did something happened again?”
“I—it’s just...” Samantha was frustrated, she pulled her hair. “I—I felt like I have really done something terrible this time.... It’s horrible...J—jake.”
“Okay, I wanted for you to calm down and breathe, Sam.” Jake’s grogginess was long gone. “And then speak slowly.”
But it isn’t working. Samantha couldn’t find the calm he was speaking. Right before she dropped the bomb.
“I killed someone—” She wept inside her car. “I—I killed somebody, Jake.”
Jake absorb it at first. He did not speak before asking, although he have an idea about whom she was referring to.
“Who?” But he wanted to confirm his suspicion. “Who did you kill, Sam?”
“It’s Italia...” Samantha wailed. “Italia Mercedes.”
Jake’s eyes widened.
“Oh god, Gustav is really going to go after me.” Samantha hurried her face on her palms, the words she uttered are unreadable and muffled by her cries.
But when Jake recover from his shock, that’s when he realized how serious the matter was.
He blew out a loud breathe and ask, “Now tell me, Sam. Where are you and—” He paused and gulps. “Did anybody see you?”
“No one—”
“That’s good.”
“—except for Gustav.”
“Oh shit.”
They are really in a serious mess, because there’s nothing in hell that Gustavio Salvador would let it slipped. Now that Italia...has been terribly hurt.
The surgery ends. Italia was rescued, but that doesn’t guarantee that she is already safe from danger. Watching her sleeping face and the peace that she seems to be at, Gustav just wanted to continuously asked, why?
Why is it her, when it should be him?
“Italia.” He touched his hand and bring it across to his cheeks.
Black bags covered his eyes but he pay no heed. It was just the two of them who was present at the room. Zamiel went out to talk to the authority about what happened and trace the whereabouts of the owner who hurt Italia.
It doesn’t seems fair. She was lying there, she looks alive, although she is still holding to the life she has, but could lost it in any moment.
Gustav knew that he could certainly lost her and that making is chest heavy.
According to the doctors report, she had a head trauma leading to concussion and there are no assurance when she would wake up.
The doctors couldn’t tell.
“Wake up, will you?” He was almost pleading for her to open her eyes.
Those eyes that always captured Gustav whether they are sad, full of happiness or with anger. Thy just mesmerized him, and now—he couldn’t even catch a glimpse of it.
It feels impossible. And thinking that she was close, but she felt far from him.
“I missed you, baby.” A tear fell from his eyes.
He missed her so bad that he couldn’t help, but blame himself. He was at fault. If only they just stay in the mansion. If only he just ignored Monica then she wouldn’t stormed out and runaway from him just like what she has been doing before.
Then perhaps, the accident wouldn’t happen and Italia was laughing with him, smiling and cherishing the moment. She isn’t supposed to be at the hospital and lying here with her eyes closed together.
RINGS.
His phone rings, but Gustav had made no love that he wanted to pick it up and answered it. But the caller do not have any plan that he wanted to leave him alone.
“f**k off!” Gustav glanced to where it is.
His mood is ruined. He would have cursed to the caller, only if he had not seen the name that was registered on the screen.
It’s Zamiel and it looks urgent.
He blew a loud breathe before picking his phone, “What?”
“You told me yesterday night that Italia was hit by a white Mercedes, right?” He asked.
“Yes.” Recalling the events made him clenched his teeth.
Whoever was driving that ducking Mercedes should pray. Once Italia woke up, Gustav wouldn’t spare him another fate to escape law and his grasp.
He would make him pay. Certainly, he would hunted him wherever he is.
“Well, my men trace the owner of the car.” Zamiel began. “And you wouldn’t believe it.”
“Why?” He frowns.
“At the last minute... After the accident, it was sold and the plate number was quickly changed to be registered to another name, but my men manage to gather enough evidence about whom it may belongs to.”
“Who?”
“You have the answer.” Zamiel uttered. “It is Samantha, Samantha Montreal, that woman who announced herself as your fiancé, Gustav.”
“Do you really think it is going to work?” Samantha looks worried as she sit there inside Jake’s penthouse while holding a fresh mug of coffee on her hand. She is still traumatised, but unlike before, she is much calmer.
“I’m sure of it, besides I have already burnt all of the documents that is connected to you and that car. I paid a few and that man to change your plate number.” Jake reassured her.
“What about the CCTVs around the area?” Samantha bit her lips.
“I took care of it, so there’s nothing you should worry.” Jake sits beside her. “Do you trust me?”
“Y—yeah.” Samantha lowered her head. “I’m sorry that I have a lot of questions.”
“It’s alright.”
“And Jake?”
“Hmm?” He look at her. But as he turned his head to her direction, Samantha was also looking at her. Their face was an inched apart and they could feel their breathe fanning across their cheeks.
“Thank you...” Samantha whispered.
Silence fell between the pair. Then slowly, Jake’s lips move inches to her lips. Samantha closes her eyes, but it never came when they are disturbed by a loud knock on his door.
“Who is it?” Jake was annoyed.
He marched to the door, opening it without much further ado only to get shunned on his feet upon seeing who is it.
“You...” Jake trembled.
“Surprise?” Gustav lighted the cigarette placed between his lips.
And at that moment, he looked rafter ruthless.
Samantha Montreal. Hearing the name, Gustav already knew who she is. The woman who always get on his nerves with her false claim that result for Italia’s jealousy, and facing her and the male she was together with filled him with anger.
“S—stop!” Samantha cried out in despair, while Jake lay there, grunting with pain. His nose is broken. His shirt is bloodied.
When he showed up on their front door, they looked surprised and Gustav knew why. They thought that they have gotten away from it. Playing with the law as if they are stupid.
“P—please... Don’t hurt her...” Jake’s cough blood.
He couldn’t feel his entire body. His eyelids are heavy but what much worst is the fact that he felt like he was under his mercy, and Gustav isn’t somebody who is just going to give it away.
“Please?” Gustav laughs coldly.
His face are hooded. His eyes are dark, but the pair could feel the fury that was brewing on those orbs. He was like a merciless king who was prepared to lashed out his wrath across until he was satisfied.
Jake never believed first that Salvador’s are scary. He always think that it because of how society viewed them, but facing Gustav now, that’s how h realized how wrong he is.
They are actually merciless.
“I’m sorry! I—it is my fault, please leave him alone.” Samantha pleaded, while being held by two of his men. Even them, they show no remorse. There are no regrets, even a slightest hint of emotions that could be easily read.
Watching the only person that cared for her, Samantha’s heart breaks into pieces. After losing her uncle, she knew that she have no one. But when he showed that he cares for her. When Jake started to express his concern, that’s when knew that she isn’t longer alone.
“I am t—the one who was driving that car, so please—” She was trembling. She wanted to fight back, but she couldn’t. “I—it is my fault, because I was blinded by jealousy.”
“What rights do you have to be envious?”
“W—what?”
“I am f*****g asking you what the rights do you have to be jealous of her!” Gustav’s voice boomed across the four towering walls.
He is not hiding back. He was clearly showing his anger.
Samantha felt scared.
But what rights does she actually has? Nothing, but delusions that perhaps one day Gustav would actually looked at her the same way he does with Italia.
Those gestures and the love she could decipher from his eyes.
She is a witnessed of it.
“I—I don’t.” She meet his eyes.
If Gustav stared with Italia out of love, then he was staring with Samantha with those eyes that seems to loathe her existence.
“B—but is it wrong to get envious although I know that you won’t feel the same?” She asked bitterly in a low voice.
“Do you really think that I would like somebody like you?” Gustav spat at her.
“I know you won’t, but it isn’t wrong to hope—” Samantha lowered her head. Her eyesight are already blurry. She can no longer stand the fact that she was being insulted by the man she used to admired.
“Then it was just a hopeless dream.”
“I know.” Tears began falling from her eyes.
She was well aware from the beginning how hopeless it was.
Gustav would never looked at her the same.
“That’s why you hurt her.” Gustav clenched his jaw.
It was taking a toll not to hurt the woman in front of him. He was full of anger, of hate and madness, but he was trying no to lay a hand on her no matter much he wanted to. It is because he knew that in spite of what happened, Italia wouldn’t like it at all.
Samantha cried and waited.
“I am not hurting you because I don’t want to be like you, but don’t think that I am letting you slip with my finger.” He threatened the pair.
With that said, two police officer showed up, and Samantha clearly knew what they are after.
She did not hesitate to offer her own hand.
“I know.” She smiled sadly.
One of the authority handcuffed her, “you have the rights to remain silent, and for an attorney, Miss Montreal.” He recited the law.
Samantha shut down her orbs.
“I’ll go in peace with you only if you can promise me one thing.” When she opened her eyes again, she meet his.
“And you still have the nerve to make request now?”
“I’m sorry, but I’ll be shameless, because I know that you are going to hate me.”
“I’m glad that you know that.”
“Bur can you let him go?” She was referring to Jake.
“W—what?! No!” Jake was totally against with the idea.
“I am the one whose at fault, and I poisoned his mind, so he should be out of the picture.”
“Sam!” But Jake’s plea fell on deaf ear.
Gustav looked at her, “If you could promise that this would be the last time we are going to see you then I might consider it.”
“I assured you.” Samantha smiled sadly
“Then it is settled.”
At that night, Samantha was arrested and punished, while Jake was left there....weakly calling for her name.
