CHAPTER 51: THE ACCIDENT
Escaping the SUV didn’t come easy. It was handy job, no matter how much Eliot tried harder.
“Damn it!” He cursed.
For an instance, he maneuvered the car in front of a ten wheeler truck, driving across to the same car that he have, but the driver seems to have its eyes fixated across to them. He never lose sight of Eliot and Raquel. The chase continued.
“Can’t you lose him?” Raquel bit her lips, her eyes are filled with fear.
“I am already trying, but this bastard won’t just let us off easily.” Eliot gritted his teeth.
He was losing his patience easily.
“What are we going to do—”
That’s when her phone rings.
RINGS.
She turned her head away from Eliot to look at however may be trying to call her at this moment, only for her heart to skip a bit. It did not flutter. The name cause her anxiety to rise up on her nape.
It’s David.
Eliot could see her reaction on his peripheral vision. He have a feeling who it was.
“Don’t answer it.”
It is David. Raquel’s husband.
“Eliot—”
“Just buckle up, I won’t let that bastard to catch up with us.” Eliot glance at her before bringing back his eyes to the road, when Raquel screamed.
“O—oh my god! Eliot look out!”
“s**t!”
The SUV came out of nowhere and blocked the road. The two were just fortunate, when Eliot stepped on the brake, and with a clenched jaw stopped the car before it could hit the one in front. If they crashed, Raquel knew that the shards of glass from the windshield would tore off their skin.
Her chest was beating wildly.
“O—oh god.” She was shaking horribly.
Who wouldn’t? Raquel felt like her life flashed before her eyes.
Eliot quickly unbuckled his seat belt to check up on her, “Are you okay?”
“I—I’m fine.” But clearly she’s not.
Who the hell would be fine here?
When Raquel looked outside, she saw that the front door of the SUV was pushed open.
“Eliot, look.” She gulps.
“We needed to get out of here.” Eliot was serious.
“How?”
How can they escape this situation, when they are cornered already?
“Do you trust me?” Eliot looked at her intently.
“You didn’t need to ask.” She did not hesitate, when she said that. “You know that I do.”
“Then trust me now, Raq.” Eliot goes back to his seat. His grip was tight on the steering wheels. “Buckled up, Raquel.”
One man stepped on the car—no, it was three armed men, who was carefully walking to Eliot’s car. By the looks of it, they doesn’t seems good news at all.
“Eliot, I’m scared.” Raquel admitted.
“Don’t be.” Eliot grab her hand. “I got you, Raq.”
When one got closer, and at that critical moment, Eliot started the car. It happened to fast. The men coughs, shielding their eyes from the dust before he drove it to the side of the road, where the river meet halfway. Flowing, when they crashed.
“ELIOT!”
Raquel’s eyes widened.
She didn’t know that he’ll settled with this crazy idea.
The impact numb her. The force slammed across to her like a brick wall the moment that the seatbelt tore off from her weight. The water is cold. She could tell, when it slipped past from the door and underneath the car. And the river was filling it faster.
“R—Raquel, are you okay?” Eliot groans.
His forehead is bleeding, when his head hit the steering wheel.
“Shit.” But he ignored the pain.
He quickly turned to his side, and there he found Raquel who wasn’t moving.
“Raq?” He called again.
There, he earned a soft moan of pain. Eliot was relieved.
He didn’t know what he is going to do, if something happens to her. He unbuckled his own seat belt and carefully grabbed Raquel. When he made sure that she is not stuck on her seat, Eliot tried to open the door of the car, but it wouldn’t budge from his kick.
“Oh, c’mon.” His breathing was ragged.
Another minute and they could possibly drown inside the car the longer they stay.
He gave it another kick, and another one until the door budge, allowing him to pulled Raquel out of the vehicle, although the latter remain unconscious.
Eliot didn’t know where to go. He isn’t familiar of the place, but he lets his instinct for survival to kick in.
BANG. BANG.
“s**t! Cease fire! Madame told us to bring them both alive.” Giovanni, the man who was chasing after the pair hisses at hi gunmen. “Shut! We lost the girl!”
“We can still track them, Sir.” One of his men suggested, it was Arturo, who is working as Giovanni’s gunmen for so long he couldn’t remember.
“Enlightened me.” He is furious.
He did not expected that Eliot would be brave enough to pulled that stunt.
That Duke, huh. He thought.
“Before they left the Smith’s mansion, I have already attached a tracker on his car—”
“That would be useless, that car was probably sinking down below.” He blew out a loud breathe.
“But Sir—”
“Just call the others and alert them. In any minute, I am sure that Eliot and Raquel would show up.” He can tell. “If they do, don’t soot them, captured them alive and immediately report to me, you got that?”
“Copy, Sir.” The other one nodded his head.
Giovanni have one last look at the river, shaking his head in disappointment, “My, that big fish slipped, when it could had been millions.”
He was talking about Eliot, whom they had been told cost one (1) billion, when brought alive, and Raquel as a bonus.
Eliot felt tired, his muscles are all burning from rigorous swimming across the river banks and Raquel is still unconscious.
She isn’t moving at all.
“R—raq…” He was cold, and so is she.
Eliot reached out, but his own vision are already turning vague, blurry, when he heard approaching footfalls.
Are they the men, who was indeed trying to captured them? He hope not, because at his state, he stand no chance to fight against them.
“Oh my god!” But it isn’t, the voice is the woman is the last thing he heard before the darkness consumed Eliot, blinding his vision with a small hope…not for himself, but he still place Raquel in front of his priority.
“Raq…please be safe…” He whispered before he fainted
Is she dead? Raquel hope not.
“Uggh…” She was groaning, when she woke up.
Raquel could feel the burning sensation on her arm, and her headache was much worst than before. She felt tired, and she could fell a pang on her chest as I’d she sucked a large amount of water resulting from the pain.
Water. At the mention of it, this reminds her of what happened yesterday. Eliot and the SUV, the men and the…the river they crashed.
Raquel gasp. Her eye widened, worries flashed before her.
“E—Eliot?!” Panic seized her stomach.
Did they caught him? Them?
She didn’t know.
“Oh, if it isn’t for my sleepyhead patient.” A man showed up from the door.
“Who are you?!” She demanded. “And where’s Eliot—argh!”
“Easy there, you haven’t fully recovered yet, girl.” The middle age man walked in an attempt to get closer at her, but she raised her hand.
“D—don’t you dare!” She coughs.
However, the man did not listen.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t you do that, when you are a patient in my hospital, girl.” The man chuckled lowly.
“W—what—” Her cough was terrible.
It is making her throat hurt.
“Relax, I’m doctor.” The man checked her vitals. “I know what I am doing, now laid back, and let’s see what’s wrong with you, but you know you were lucky.” He added, while checking the monitor on her side. “With that amount of river water? You could have died, you should be thankful that Anita found you.”
“A—Anita?” Her voice turned hoarse.
Who is Anita? Raquel is confused.
“That nice old lady, who bring you and your friend here.” He turned his eyes to Raquel and bent low. “Now open your mouth, let’s check how bad it is.”
Left with no choice, Raquel oblige.
“Not too bad, but it could get worst.” He said, before pulling away. “I know that you haven’t fully trust me yet, so let me introduce myself.” The doctor grinned. “My name is Jerome Gonzales at your service.”
“Where’s Eliot?”
“Eliot?” Jerome asked when he realized something. “Right, your friend. Well, why don’t you turn to your left and you’ll find him, but for now—” Jerome glanced at his wristwatch. “—I still have to check on some of my patient, so adios.” [`goodbye]
Doctor Gonzales left, and true to his words, when Raquel turned to her left side, there she found Eliot, but same at her state before, the man is unconscious.
Truly he is, but Raquel is relieved that he’s alive and breathing.
“Eliot…”
