CHAPTER 50: CONTROVERSY
“I heard that your mother-in-law stopped by, David.” Mrs. Smith said, his mother drinks from her cup of tea prepared by her own personal maid.
She was clad on a sophisticated formal dress that was hugging her curves, although she was already at 45 years of age. The older woman looks much younger, but it is her strict face that repelled some to approach her, nor having any thoughts in mind to dare talk to the might Mrs. Smith.
“They did.” David held no surprise, when his mother brings up the subject. He knew her well, but what made him curious is the fact that she summoned him out of nowhere…just for what? To have a tea?
No, somethings definitely going on.
“—But I just wanted to ask why call me here in your office?” He continued.
He’s no fool.
“Very well, always skeptical, son.” Mrs. Smith seems satisfied. “But bueno, since you are asking, let me return he question back to you, David.”
“What’s going on, Ma?” David frowns.
“I should be the one asking you that.” Mrs. Smith’s face hardened. “What’s going on, David? You and Raquel, I wanted to know what has been going on with the both of you.”
“We’re alright—”
“Don’t give me that bullshit” Mrs. Smith spat. “You can’t fool me. For all these years, I am not stupid, so quit talking about the fact that you are okay, but the fact that you are letting your wife cheated on you under your nose, David!”
His mother was outrageous.
But what she said is what caught David’s attention.
“Cheating?”
He heard her correctly, right?
“When I thought that you are very skeptical.” Mrs. Smith shook her head disappointedly, before placing an envelope on top of the table that was separating the two. “Open it up, this would explain what your wife had been doing behind your back, David.”
His chest skip a beat.
Slowly, David picked up the envelope. He hadn’t believed his mother first, only if he haven’t seen the photographs.
They contain Raquel…but with a man. She’s with a very familiar man..
“Eliot Duke.” The man, who shamelessly threatened David on his own house.
His shocked turned surprised, when he saw them…kissing, so intimate with each other. But what fueled to the fire was Raquel and Eliot’s n***d body captured on the parking lot, after Eliot was told that he is supposed to marry Grace, Raquel’s sister.
“What is the meaning of this?” He was enrage.
When he thought that Raquel wouldn’t do anything to angered him. He was ready to fixed their marriage, when she vent out her feelings, but seeing everything and how much she enjoys fooling David, his sympathy and guilt disappear.
“You are still asking me, when you clearly just saw that your wife is cheating on you, David?” Her voice drips with sarcasm.
David did not speak. He couldn’t tore his eyes off from pictures. His eyes are blazing with anger. Storm brewing as he clenched his muscles, his jaw locked. Madness spread across his chest.
Oh, how much David wanted to ruin those smiles!
Mrs. Smith leaned her back on her swivel chair, “If you only disciplined her much tighter, it wouldn’t have happened, David. Oh my, what would our friends going to tell us? That we are stupid?... Oh, my son, who thinks he have her on her throat.”
“Where is she?” When he lifted his head, he looks murderous.
“I didn’t know where she is, David.” Mrs. Smith taunted her son. “I am not her husband after all.”
“Stop playing some games with me, Ma!” David screamed. He stood up. “I know that you have some connections. You probably hired someone to followed Raquel, so where is she?”
“What are you going to do, if I really know?” Mrs. Smith raised her eyebrows. “You didn’t love her, so why care now, David?”
“She’s my wife.” David glared at her. “And you should not care about what I am bound to do, because I have every rights, Ma.”
“But I do.” Mrs. Smith leaned closer to watched him. “I care, seeing that my son looks as if he is going to murder somebody…”
Because David will.
“Raquel, hold up.” Eliot looked at the rear view mirror.
“What’s the problem?” Raquel asked.
“I think we are being followed.” He frowns.
He’s no fool. Ever since they left the house, Eliot noticed a black SUV that has been tailing them around. He never lose sight of it, one time, then it would reappear behind as if trying to conceal the fact that it was following them.
Whatever it was up to, or whoever it is… Eliot doesn’t feel good. His guts are already telling him that something is going on.
Worry flashed before Raquel’s eyes, “Are you sure?”
“I am certain.” He maneuver the car.
Fear crept on Raquel’s chest. She bit her lips, when her anxiety spread across her body. She have an idea who may be behind them. It’s either one David’s men or somebody hired by her mother. But neither of the two put her at ease.
If it is David, then did he know that she is with Eliot?
That wouldn’t result to anything good.
“Let’s change our way.” She gulps.
“I know.” Eliot glanced from the mirror. “Don’t worry, I’ll try to lose him out of our sight, so we can still go to that place, Raq.” His words are reassuring.
For a moment, Raquel felt like she didn’t need to worry no more. Eliot was here to keep her safe… but she knew not for a long time.
“I trust you, Eliot.” Raquel buried all her doubts.
For the very first time, she entrusted herself to Eliot, although afraid, and was hoping that no troubles would be waiting for her after this day, but she felt different. As if whoever was following them already meant trouble as it is.
Oh god. She pray silently.
When David left, Mrs. Smith have a strange smile on her lips as it protruded.
“Now, we’re even, Lauren.” She chuckled.
The door of the room located inside her office was pushed opened. A woman elegantly walked with prudence.
“Very well, Amanda.” It was Lauren Duke, who triumphantly smile as if she’s up to something.
No, Lauren was really up to no good…this time.
