Welcome Home...or Not
Katherine Tomsen had forgotten the silence of her home village. And she’d forgotten the peace of Heart Cove’s streets as the feeling of safety wrapped around her.
Until it flowed through her when she got home.
And for an hour, a glorious hour, she reconnected with that home as she walked down streets she’s known her entire life, until it was loud and clear in her blood. She was home and her wants and desires of why she came home were clear.
She wanted this feeling back and it was home that could only give it.
Safe at eleven at night, or usually safe when it was just the people of Heart Cove. She’d gotten to her parents' house without a hitch. She’d worried, she’d been gone too long. In the time she had been gone, she had sent letters and trinkets, pictures of her life, but it’d all gone unanswered. Worried her elderly parents were no more, it was as she got there and was greeted by a woman she didn’t know, her mom appeared.
Beaming happy Katherine. chirped, “Hi mom.”
Only to get a frank, “What are you doing here?” In response.
That was three weeks ago, and the energy was still fraught as Katherine settled in. Now living in the cottage, she was sure would never feel like home again, Katherine found herself enjoying it a lot more than she ever thought she would when she was a teen. Still living with her parents but having more space from them, she was grateful.
Having dealt with the eyes of judgement enough, Katherine could almost still feel them when she heard her phone trill with her alarm. Knowing she had work soon, she sighed as she stretched her slim body before rushing to get ready.
Suitcase and duffel not really unpacked, Katherine found a cute dress and sweater to go with boots and a scarf before braiding her hair into a French braid that fell to the small of her back.
Light makeup being too much work, Katherine only grabbed a lip gloss as she hurried outside seeing the time. Eloise at the back door, her aquamarine eyes already on her escaping daughter, Katherine pretended not to notice her mother as she rushed to the side of the house.
Seeing Ms. Colson reading a book on her porch, Katherine shouted a happy good morning making the old woman smile back. Grabbing the bike, she’d had since she was fourteen, Katherine was surprised the air hadn’t gone out in it. But as she held the handlebars and felt nothing but Camille’s presence, she rolled her eyes.
Of course, even her bike had been up for lease at one point.
Not wanting to be spiteful and make life harder by getting off and walking, Katherine began peddling to her new job as remembering the offer of employment made her smile. She had no clue as to why Hannah Shaw had offered, but the idea of her own money had been amazing. Having once upon a time babysat her younger siblings, they’d been cool up until Katherine left and Hannah was shunned. Two actions that made early twenties women happy to see each other when they’d ran into each other after their whole debacle at the pack castle.
“I want you to work with us at spellbound.” Hannah had pleaded, “We’re a little short staff with my aunt on her honeymoon right now.” Surprised since she hadn’t heard of Tabatha Shaw marrying, Katherine had still done a little whoop of happiness for her and agreed without thinking.
Because she did need money and loved being around her witch friend. And it was an excuse not to linger at the house staring at her disappointed parents who were probably wondering where they went wrong.
So, it was a win-win.
Only now as she pulled her bike into the alley knowing it would be safe, Katherine saw Camille’s aura there too and winced a little. She knew she should be numb to being second best to her older, prettier, and wiser new sister. But no, the feeling of either being replaced by her, or jealousy at everything she had was still coming in waves.
So much so, Katherine wasn’t paying attention to who was watching her.
Not until the wind was knocked out of her when she was suddenly picked up and pushed against the wall of the alley.
Breathless as she calmed down to feel who was holding her tight, Katherine was speechless as she looked into the eyes of her growling wolf, “You’re not running away anymore little pixie. You’re all mine.”
And then she was kissed breathless.
Maybe she should explain…
Because Katherine knew it was weird. There was no meet cute happening and yet she’s happily being kissed. She gets the confusion, so let’s rewind here.
It happened on the day of Aiden Smoak’s heir announcement ceremony. As the little prince was being fussed and loved on by his parents as well as hers, Katherine had felt like the odd one out. Getting double takes that felt pointed or accusatory, Katherine hadn’t meant to glare meanly at one of her old school friends.
Having been no longer friends before she left, Katherine watched the beautiful girl pale as Katherine nastily rolled her eyes before turning away.
Katherine knew it was a little bitchy, if anything the poor girl had only been one of the many followers that treated her that way just to do what everyone else did. Either way, Katherine had no patience or care for it as she felt her stomach churn as the whispers directed at her or about her, burned her ears.
Turning to her parents cooing at Aiden as they stayed by Camille’s side, the snub was noted. So, when she was walking away and neither noticed or cared at the time to try and stop her, she’d felt the disregard and knew it wasn’t in her head. Not told to come and join them and become integrated into the new life and family they seemed to have created, Katherine was kept at arm’s length.
And what was worse, was her feeling like they were okay with her being left on the outside of their new lives. Which left her defenseless and exposed when she was cornered by Ida Grim. A notorious grouch, the old siren was as cold blooded as her ancestors who dragged men under the sea.
A nasty grin that didn’t do her wide face any favors, the cruel woman barbed, “Well I see the notorious Heart Cove’s very own scandalous barbie has returned.” Not in the mood for her, Katherine tried to sidestep her only for Ida to place her wide hip against a chair blocking her from getting past.
“You know I’m so happy for your parents.” She stressed as her ugly mustard-colored eyes seemed to pin Katherine to the ground. “They were so lonely and sad, not to mention disappointed when you left.” Knowing the hit was mostly true, Katherine felt punched when the vicious words kept coming, “It’s so great that a stranger could come along and take care of them. Give them the love of a proper daughter who doesn’t have, well, such wild ways they must explain away.”
Seeing Katherine kicked and thinking she was down, Ida wasn’t holding back as she finished, “Well here’s hoping that your reputation doesn’t proceed you and you can still find some life for yourself here. I’m sure the village people of Heart Cove will forget.” Hearing a snicker behind them to see a group of older women looking at Katherine like she was something nasty, Ida felt more justified as she taunted, “Or maybe not.”
And just when she thought she’d get the tears and sadness she so desired, Ida was left stunned when she faced nothing but disgust. Anger and disgust.
“I see your still old, bitter, and horrible as can be. Nice to know somethings don’t change. But you can’t teach an old b***h new tricks I suppose.” Mouth falling open, people around having heard what Ida said, now heard what Katherine said as the young Pixie taunted, “And you calling me a slut after you won’t even tell your kids who their real father is? That’s comical.”
Paling as her eyes widened in horror, Katherine’s widened in amusement, “Right, you didn’t see me when you were hooking up with your married lover. But he saw me, I bet he was on pins and needles thinking I’d say something to his wife.”
Ida looked at her daughter and son not paying attention to her getting a verbal slap. You can win by getting actual proof of them in the back of a shack with a very married man and his cousin…and his brother-in-law.”
Looking ready to faint, Ida started to open her mouth, but Katherine shook her head slowly at the half-hearted excuses, “You’re nothing but a bully and it’s pathetic giving your age.” Silence as her mouth became a thin line, Ida was unable to say a thing as Katherine warned only once, “And I’ll warn you only once to not come for me again Ida. Learn now that while you can make up lies with zero back up, I actually have proof of your w***e activities. So do you.”
Blushing hot red in the face at the words she’d hissed at the younger Katherine coming back to haunt her, so did the mocking laugh Katherine did so much better.
“Exactly, so now the time you realize that what I do in my bedroom? Is of no concern of yours.” About to speak and possibly ruin the reputation she was so proud of, Ida wisely hushed as Katherine’s eyes narrowed dangerously, “Or I can tell everyone about whose bedroom you’ve been in. And we’ll see who has a harder time walking down the street by the time I’m done.”
Knowing she couldn’t handle it, Katherine knew they were spotted when she felt the young girl come closer as she threatened her mother, “Keep running your mouth Ida, and I’m going to ruin your life and your relationship with your kids. And it’ll be no one’s fault but that big ass mouth of yours.”
Stepping back as Ida’s daughter Paulette came over, she was surprised as Katherine chirped, “Hey Paulette, look at you girlie, all tall and pretty.” Making Paulette blush as Katherine winked before looking at Ida as if daring her to say anything else.
But the kicked b***h turned and hauled her daughter away with her tail tucked between her legs. Barking at her child to never speak to Katherine, Paulette was clued in then something was up between them. But as her mother refused to answer and she’d have to go to the older girl eventually? For now, Paulette listened.
Leaving Katherine to feel she won for a second, she then felt eyes on her and turned to see none other than the s**t starter herself. Eyes sharp like knives, they stared like Katherine should be dead, and they wished she’d hurry up and do so. Josie’s look was worse than the others somehow.
Like Katherine, deserved the hate and disgust she received when in fact she knew she didn’t.
And while on one hand Katherine wanted to confront her? She knew now wasn’t the time or place as her parents cooing over their “grandson” made her realize she’d embarrass them further if she started with Josie.
Turning on her heels, not in the mood for the side eyes from Josie or her posse of mean girls, Katherine knew she had dirt and the fire. But she was already feeling her anxiety spike because of Ida. She couldn’t allow Josie to get her riled up too.
Then she’d be ready to fight and if her parents were embarrassed of her before? Having a public drag out and knock out round with her enemy might make that embarrassment, shame. Shamed to the point they would walk around with bags over their heads.
Something she couldn’t do to her parents as they stood glowing like Christmas ornaments beside Camille. Their taller, prettier, healthier tree that made her look like a midget tree with barely any branches.
“Whatever.” Dismissing them like they dismissed her, Katherine walked to the woods not caring about the stray glance she got.
