Walking slowly as her wedges made her feet hurt, Katherine wanted to kick them off.
But no way in hell could she handle stepping in wolf s**t in the moment.
Walking until she found a stump far away from the party, Katherine was lighting up a joint when she heard, “Didn’t anyone ever tell you, that’s bad for you?” Smiling a little, Katherine taunted, “Bad things end up being good things to help you get through it.”
Looking at Nostradamus Valik, Katherine beamed at the handsome man as his butterscotch gold eyes glowed at her, “Hi Katie-bell.” Not upset weirdly at him calling her the cute play on Tinkerbelle, the childhood nickname coming from him instead made her grin, “Hey Nostradamus, how you?” Holding out her joint, he accepted it with a happy, “Just fine and making it so far. And yourself?”
Realizing she couldn’t say the same, Katherine was surprised when she heard herself say, “Thinking about taking the earliest train to Belgium. I have a cousin there who’d put me up…I’d be better off there than here.”
When she realized what she said, Katherine exhaled knowing it was the truth.
She didn’t want to stay in Heart Cove nearly as much as she thought she did. With whispers and glares coming from the young to the old of the community she felt judged and tired already. And it wouldn’t get better. “You shouldn’t let a bunch of nosey ass busybodies get to you, darling.” Nodding to where Ida was, Nostradamus could see the old shrew more clearly as she gossiped and lied with Bethel Bradshaw about Katherine.
“They are bored and need something to entertain themselves with.”
And if it wasn’t her, they’d be picking at someone else for even lesser sins than being a teenager.
Something proven by his existence since he came to this pack. “It’s not fair though.” Katherine whispered feeling burned out, “I just got home and already I feel depleted with having to fight for my right to walk down the sidewalk without someone giving me a nasty glare.”
And for what? Because she kissed a boy.
For all the hell she was catching, Katherine kind of regretted not going to second or even third base. At least then she’d have a story and experience to back up all the horrible things being said about her.
But then…wouldn’t it make them true?
“No.” Nostradamus had seen where her mind went, he passed her joint before gently whispering, “No one should have had an opinion on what you did or who you did it with honey. It’s not their f*****g business who you f**k. It’s them acting WAYYY out of line just because they feel it’s so scandalous how it was first…discussed.”
Discussed? More like shouting in a nasty, petty, and frankly childish way.
Rumors and hate swirling for an eighteen-year-old that had been unjustly crucified and then left to feel unwanted and shunned like a true adulterer.
Something no one should have had to face.
“I’m sorry kid, for everything. I should have spoken up-.” Shaking her head, Katherine whispered, “I wasn’t yours to defend.” Knowing that, Nostradamus weirdly for a second wanted her to be. If only just to have someone as desperate loneliness kept sneaking in and telling him to find someone.
But when he tried to feel for the connection it fell flat as the sweet pixie that had always been kind to him, only shined as another Camille figure to him. A friend and someone to see again as family, but never someone to lust or want.
How disappointing…
“Maybe not in that way,” Nostradamus conceded as he stopped looking for hope in a dead end, and instead looked at the sky, “but you always kept people from bullying me. All your pixie cousins thought you were weird for being so nice to me.” Trying not to laugh since Nostradamus hadn't really needed defending, the bigger and taller dark cloud had just been looked at wrong.
Not liking it since Nostradamus had done nothing to deserve the looks, she’d made it known they were friends when she sat with him one day. Being vicious whenever she heard someone talking spit about him, she’d be bold and yell, “I’m sorry what did you have to say about Nostradamus? He’s right here if you need to talk to him. Maybe get to know him better before spreading lies and rumors?”
Left red face and embarrassed, a lot of her pixie kin had pulled away from her because she’d embarrass them like that.
Which she didn’t care about at all at the time. Deducing that if they were fake to him, smiling in greeting and then talking s**t when he wasn’t looking, she knew they’d be that fake to her. And low and behold…
“I just want to be somewhere I’m wanted. And it’s not here.” Nostradamus felt a sense of change in the air and felt someone’s urgency. “Don’t worry darling. The signs of where you need to be are around, just…lean into them.” Stroking her hair, she watched him stand before promising, “I’m finding you later so we can hang out.” He sent her a drooling look, “You’re like one of the few people I can actually say that like to hang out with me.”
Giving him a grin, Katherine teased, “It’s an honor then. Let’s me know I’m the real cool kid.” Laughing since no one called him cool, Nostradamus left Katherine to stand and dust herself off. A good high from her bud and a little less tense thinking EVERYONE hated her, Katherine started to leave back to the party.
Breaking out of the trees, and then realizing the ceremony was not even starting yet, Katherine was awkward standing there.
Her parents were talking to people of their community and Katherine didn’t have anyone else she considered a friend. Or at least not one she could see anyway.
It was as she was debating hiding in the woods again to not look like a loser in front of everyone that she heard a soft growl. One of appreciation…
Hair on her arms rising as she turned slow, Katherine’s senses slammed into her…
“Mate?”
He was tall as hell. That was the first thing Katherine had noted.
Tall and built like he’d eaten Thor.
Sexy, with a scar running down his neck to his chest, Katherine fought the desire to run her tongue over it as his artic blue eyes pierced her like bullets. “H-hi?” Taking him in and realizing she didn’t know him; the huge man came closer as she kept trying to see if she could place his face. She had seen a lot of kids she’d grown up with over the years and most had indeed changed with the two, almost three years she’d been gone.
But as long black braids with different strings and charms landed on his large chest, Katherine knew the tall man in front of her wasn’t someone she grew up with. No glow up would let her forget the beautiful man in front of her or at least those beautiful eyes.
“Hi.” He grinned a little as she suddenly peered over his shoulder. Listening in and hearing the ceremony start, he told her causing Katherine awkwardly to ask, “Do you want to go to that?”
Making her mate honestly snort, “No. I came out of respect for Alpha Elijah. He asked me to come even though I’m not officially pack.”
Staring at the man with the brilliant smile that peered down at her, Katherine’s heart fluttered as he drawled flirtingly, “I’m much happier to be alone with you.” Taking that as their sign to duck away and feeling every sense of euphoria, Katherine was walking them back to a little spot in the woods when she asked stupidly, “You’re not…you’re not from here? Pack I mean?”
Shaking his head as he glanced around casually, “No,” he smiled as she stopped and his hands came up gently to hold hers, “Henry Foy. I just got here from Alaska. You?” Her softs hands linked with his naturally, “I’m Katherine Tomsen, I’ve lived here since I was a child. I’m just returning though.” Confused since he was sure he’d met her parents but had been under the assumption they were the alpha female’s only, Henry started to ask.
