Katherine slept for two days while her body healed, and Henry didn’t budge from beside her. Holding her as they both floated in the steaming pond they weren’t even pruned. Just out of time floating in a state of daze. Katherine didn’t remember much of it.
She went in and out of consciousness. Only hearing his voice soothing her when she was awake Katherine was calmed at the knowledge that at least she was safe. She was with him.
Whimpers as her power bled through her and made her veins glow blue through her skin as magic burned her blood. Flowers growing as her power escaped in uncontrollable bursts, Henry watched them blossom in trees and on leaves in the water.
Falling from the trees overhead slowly as more grew, Katherine held on to Henry as they fell around them slowly in a rain and the petals clung to their skin.
Not moving when someone approached and tried to tell him he could leave her, for the fifth time, Henry got sick of it and finally just spit out, “Yeah, I don’t need permission to leave my mate. I just don’t trust any of you.” Not surprised by the anger but a little hurt since they would never hurt Katherine, they started to tell him that.
Only when they stopped lying that their actions hadn’t been harmful. And the guilt came back remembering their past behavior and they all scurried away with their heads bowed in shame.
When Katherine finally woke up and her eyes could stay open, she was grateful he was the first person she saw. Hugging him tight, she whispered, "Thank you for not leaving me.” He kissed her head, “Of course mate. I was not going anywhere.” Breathing out tiredly she blinked confused as her dry mouth made her head hurt, “What day is it?” He sighed breathing out, “No clue. It’s been two. And it’s going on late evening today. So almost three.”
Nodding as she tried to remember what day it had been before she’d gotten there, Kathrine realized because of her depressive state she didn’t know the date then either. Sighing, they heard the footsteps and the silky voice state, “It’s Thursday dear. The twelfth.”
She looked up and saw an auntie of sorts, the fairy was a healer and her tribe helped with births. Births, war healing, and illness. They were all beautiful and as the blue hue to their skin shined in the day, they approached slowly, “How are you feeling child?” Katherine sniffled as she looked away, “Fine Madame Delores.” Sad to see her so uncomfortable with her presence, the woman asked gently in their fairy tongue if she could help her.
Knowing a healing session would help soothe her encouraged Katherine to nod as she knew she’d feel less shitty as her stomach still turned and her head hurt.
Happy when the women joined them in the water, Henry still didn’t move from her side. He instead held tighter, as they chanted around them. Steam rising higher, and water hotter, he held Katherine tight as tattoos on her wrist suddenly glowed as did her eyes. Slumping when they stopped chanting, the forest fell quiet as Katherine released another wave of power.
Nausea and headache passing, she breathed out deep as Madame Delores told her she should feel better to leave within the hour. Patting her head, she whispered something that made Katherine flinch but nod.
David and Eloise approaching out of concern, they watched the Fairies leaving the water nod to Katherine before going back to their bungalows on the other side of the colony. When they were gone, it left the older couple staring at the newly mating.
Beautiful as Katherine stared at Henry happily they melted as she gushed blushing, “Thank you for staying…again.” He smiled widely, “And again, I’m not going anywhere darling.”
She curled into his neck, “I want a bed. And a burger.” Laughing deeply, her parents did too and when she glanced at them, both could see the distrust. Sitting on the banks of the water, Eloise whispered, “We’re sorry. We had been so petty in your decision to leave we ignored when you told us how you’d be contacting us.” Seeing her mama holding up a letter she’d written, Katherine’s heart skipped a beat as Eloise confessed, “So, when Bartha began hiding your letters, we never even knew we had gotten anything.”
Looking at them shocked Katherine whispered, “She hid them?” David nodded as he explained, “She hid everything. Something about an old grudge against me…it doesn’t matter. It’s bullshit and,” he sighed heavily, “it doesn’t matter.” He shook his head, “I should have known you wouldn’t just not contact us in the first place and came to get you.”
Meeting her eyes, David rasped “I understand you wanted your independence, your own character out of a narrative I built. But…it hurt when it felt like we lost you completely. You’d already pulled away so much here and then when you left-.”
Katherine looked away, “I pulled away here because you both treated me like something foul you stepped in. I left because no one, not even the two of you, could see I was hurting. I understood you being mad at me, but the stuff with Josie…it wasn’t right. It never will be.”
They knew that and Eloise whispered, “We know darling. We were wrong in not defending you. It should have never gone this far, and I’m sorry for not being the mother you needed. I failed, I acknowledge, hate it, and I want to fix it..”
Looking at her hands locked with Henry, the wolf nudged her head, and she closed her eyes as David asked helplessly, “What do you need…for us to have the potential of being a family again?”
Katherine breathed out, “We’ll always be family, I just…need time. And space.” David understood and Eloise did as well. Both just sat with them for a while and when Katherine’s veins finished glowing, they finally told him she could leave the water.
David made the request, and Katherine said she would think about it.
Until then, she left with Henry.
