her provocation

“Who is here?” Mona immediately screamed, jumping on me in fright. We looked around with wide opened eyes in fear. It was when I registered my surrounding. The whole corridor was completely deserted, filled with dry leaves and torn papers, winds whistling very faintly, giving the whole place a creepy background. “Mona… wh… where are we?” I asked her while stuttering hard in fear, holding her tightly into my embrace. She had wrapped her hands around my neck, and legs around my waist, trembling hard in fear. “A… at the bac… back sid… side of .. the stadium.” She answered, shivering hard like a dry leave in strong wind. Well, I am a normal human being, and like others, I also afraid of ghosts. And if all those movies and novels described correctly, this place was a perfect place for a wondering ghost. “L… let’s g.. et out of here first.” I suggested and without wasting a second, started running with all my strength, holding Mona in my embrace in the same position. “Is there a ghost here?” she asked me frightfully. “Shut up.” I scolded her for scaring me more. “What do we do, Char, if he decides to follow us for disrupting his peace?” she didn’t stop questioning though. “Then I will throw you in front of him and, of course, he must have seen you dragging me here.” I threatened her angrily; my heart was now thumping aloud against my ribcage. “I.. I am your best friend. How can you do this to me?” she yelled at me, crying as if I had done wrong to her. “Why on earth did you choose this place from all the other places in the school?” I yelled back in fear and anger. “Mona…. Char…. What happened, girls? Why are you running as if you have seen ghosts?” I stopped in my tracks when our PE teacher, Mr. Hampton’s voice struck my eardrums. I immediately spun on my heels, moving towards them. My heart stopped beating when I saw Mr. Hampton coming towards me, Adam, Natalie and the whole cheerleading squad were behind them. My whole body shuddered hard in anger and agony when I saw Adam holding Natalie’s hand protectively, an amusing smile dancing on his lips. So, is he proud of what he did to me? Who the hell does he think he is? Just a dog in heat… Mona immediately jumped down from my embrace but held my hand tightly. Natalie had a provocative smile on her lips, and it took me all my will not to scratch her face when she rubbed her plastic b*easts to Adam’s arm. So, this is what boys these days like, huh? Not pure love but an outlet to release their s****l urges? I was so naïve to think that pure love existed. May be in the past, but not in today’s world. “Mr. Hampton… quickly called the security. I …. I was coming back from the restroom whe… when I saw two people coming out of the boy’s locker room, an… and then they ran towards the back alley of the stadium,” Mona said to Mr. Hampton hurriedly, sounding frightened. I snapped my head in her direction, completely confused by what she said. “Wh… what are you talking about?” Mr. Hampton asked her worriedly while coming towards us. “You must hurry, Mr. Hampton. The… they were sn.. sneaky, an… and when I and Char called them, th… they pulled out knives…. This… this (she showed her hand to specify the length of those imaginary knives) long.” She replied, still sounding scared and excited at the same time. “O my god!” someone from the cheerleading squad screamed in panic. “Don’t scream. Everything is okay,” Mr. Hampton immediately shouted at them while stopping in front of us. Meanwhile, more people filled the corridor. It seemed that the event had ended and that was why, everyone was going back to the main building. There are indeed two locker rooms at the back side of the stadium-one for girls and the other for boys. I don't know why Mona lied, but I decided to play along when I saw Natalie wiping sweat from her forehead. You dared to play games with me, now let's see how your now boyfriend handled this. Natalie doesn't like to play, keeping her innocence for the perfect one card. It wasn't a secret that she has been in s*x*al relationship after she turned sixteen. And yet Adam decided to name her as his girlfriend. I don't know why I found him attractive earlier. I was now calmed enough to recompose my thoughts, and after witnessing him kissing Natalie as if there will be no tomorrow, I thanked my cards that I had never let him kiss me. “Please, Mr. Hampton. I am not lying. They must still inside the school premises. Please check the security footage.” Mona insisted desperately. “Alright, alright. Don’t panic. You all, go back to your classes, and stay inside until we ensure that everything is okay.” Mr. Hampton instructed all of us. “Mr. Hampton. Mona must have seen wrong. H.. how can any unauthorized person enter the school?” Natalie stammered hard, stopping Mr. Hampton from calling the security. “You want to say th.. that I am delusional, and see things in broad daylight?” Mona accused her, while moving towards them, her hands were now on her hips. I sighed and put my hand on her shoulder from behind. “Or you don’t want everyone to know what you did in the boy locker’s room before the race?” she added further in a mischievous tone. I am ashamed to admit that the way colour drained from Natalie’s face, and Adam went into shock. I didn’t know what Mona saw earlier, but now the picture was clear to me. Served him right. “Enough, all of you.” Mr. Hampton shouted while glancing at Natalie and Adam. I don’t know what happened after Mona dragged me away from the stadium. So, I had no clue about why Mr. Hampton was so angry towards them. I could see him shooting daggers at Adam through his eyes. “Everyone,” his commanding voice boomed the whole corridor. “In your classes now.” “Come on. Let’s go.” I urged Mona in a low voice and started dragging her towards the other end of the corridor. I don’t want to stay in the same space as Adam and Natalie. “Charlotte.” I heard him yelling my name, but he was no longer of my concern. Both I and Mona increased our pace as if we were chased by an army of ghosts. “Are you sure that you are okay now?” Mona asked me worriedly after we stopped inside our class. I smiled weakly while walking towards my seat. “What’s there to be sad about? Boys who like girls like Natalie because they have no problem with having intimacy to any extent. I am boring because I don’t want a fleeting fling.” I berated myself nonchalantly, but tears filled my eyes again. Is it easy to forget your first love-entanglement so easily? Even if it is only for six months or less than so? “You are not bored, Charl. Don’t berate yourself for that p*ick. You are just not good at judging characters. Morover, to do these kinds of things, you must feel a spark, an... an urge to do. You... you just didn't feel that with him, that's it,” Mona slapped my arm playfully while scolding me, but what she said in the end sounded right. In most romantic movies or novels, we see or read about those sparks. She is right. I never felt that urge to kiss Adam or get too close to him. I smiled, packed my bag, and threw it on my back. “Shall we?” I asked Mona, who was still packing her bags. “Yeah… almost done.” She mumbled and I waited for her to finish. I looked at the door coldly when I saw Adam and Natalie entering the room together, holding hands tightly. “Talk about bad luck.” Mona muttered, but I looked away immediately. I had no desire to see a s*umbag and a s*ut flaunting their love to everyone. “I called you before. Why didn’t you stop?” I looked back at Adam with a huff. “Are you talking to me?” I asked him, sounding bored while pointing a finger towards me. He knitted his brows, clenched his jaw, clearly not expecting my reaction. “O come on, Char. You are not sulking about him proposing to me, not you, are you?” Natalie asked me in her shrilled nasal voice, making me nauseated, playing with one loose strand of her hair, head tilted a little, a provocative smile dancing on her red-painted lips. I dry heaved, facing them, making them flinch backward. “Hey… what happened?” Mona shrieked in panic while holding me by my shoulder. I glanced at them one more time and dry heaved once again without masking my disgust at them. “Uhhh.. nothing… just allergic to nasal voices.” I answered, clearing my throat, catching my breath before looking back at that shameless couple. “Sorry… were you saying something?” I asked them in a hoarse voice. “Ha…. you know what?” Natalie once again opened her mouth, taunting at me. “Grapes are sour. I am sure that you have heard this phrase, right?” she asked and I snorted in disdain. “For your information, Natalie. I hate grapes.” I replied sassily, one hand on my hip, one holding the strap of my bag, my brows c****d, challenging her to say one more word, and I would put her in her place.
