I looked at her and saw the shock settling in. The way her face had gone pale. The way her hands were trembling slightly at her sides.
"You didn't know I was the CEO?" I asked, though the answer was obvious.
"Huh? How am I expected to know? You literally just resumed work." she countered, and there was something sharp in her tone now. Accusatory.
I looked away, unable to hold her gaze. "I figured it out yesterday. When I saw your file. Your picture." I forced myself to continue, to stick to the story I'd prepared. The partial truth that would hide the bigger one. "And I knew we wouldn't be able to work together. Not with our... bitter relationship. That's why I fired you. So…"
"Really?" Hailey's voice cut through my explanation like a blade.
