Chapter 13

Beep…. Beep…. Beep

Lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by noisy machines. In the distance I can hear Trent talking, not sure who he talking to. I feel his presence near me. I can feel him touching my hand, kissing it. “Avery, baby you need to wake up soon. I miss you so much. Baby, you cant leave me, I love you” he whisper into my ear. I try to open my eyes, but they are too heavy. I want to tell him I can hear him but no words come out of my mouth. Then I feel and hear nothing. Darness. Silence. I must be dead. I’m leaving him behind. Wait. That light, I can see a light. I feel my body go towards the light, my eyes not as heavy anymore, I flutter my eyes open, bright lights overhead. I snap my eyes back shut, I move my hand to shield the light as they flutter open again. I take in my surroundings, a bright white ceiling, the smell of disinfectant. I’m in hospital, obviously. Why? What happened?

Then I remember the altercation at the office, Melissa pushed me to the ground, I banged my head. That explains the pain in my head. I try to sit up, a mask over my mouth, cable attached to my arms, the beeping of the machine changing while I try to move around.

“Ms Benson, please stay still, I will call the doctor.” A young lady wearing a nurses uniform, gently pushing me back against the bed. A few minutes later an older lady comes in wearing a white coat. “Ms Benson, so good to see you awake. Let me just check your vitals and then we can chat, ok?” I nod my head as she starts to take some cables of my arms and the removes the mask from my face. After a few minutes, she starts asking questions like my name, what I remember of the accident. She says its to make sure I have no memory lose.

Just as the doctor is finishing writing on my file, the door slams open and Trent comes rushing in straight to the side of my bed. “Avery!” He yells on his way round the bed. “Baby, you are awake” he grabs my face in his hands and starts kissing my head and caressing the side of my face. “Trent, I love you so much” I sob into his chest as he pulls me in for a hug. “Careful Mr Colton, she may be awake but she is still fragile” the doctor tells Trent. “Sorry, Sorry. Baby, you ok? How’s your head? Has she been given any pain meds?” Trent starts blurting out questions to the doctor. “Yes, all meds have been administered. Her vitals are good, memory seems stable. She will just need to rest and hopefully in a day or two she can be discharged.” The doctor explains to us, while Trent gets comfy on the side of the bed.

The doctor and nurse soon leave the room to let me rest. Not that I will get much rest with Trent fussing over me. It is sweet that he cares but I need to get the questions answered in my head. “Trent, baby, please just sit down, I’m fine at the moment. Maybe a little hungry, the nurse will be back with food.” I tell him as I pull his arm to sit in the chair next to the bed. “I know baby, oh god I have missed hearing your sweet voice” he says as he holds my hand in his and kisses my knuckles. “I know, I have missed you too.” A silence falls between us just as the nurse returns with some tea and toast and a selection of jams. I thank her and she leaves again.

“Trent, the doctor didn’t say anything about the baby?” I whisper, scared because she never mentioned anything about the baby.

“The baby is fine sweetheart. No complications with the baby at all.” He assures me as he helps me to pour my tea.

“How long was I out for?” I ask sipping the sweet tea, delicious.

“Nearly 3 weeks, baby” he says with a sad tone.

“Oh my.” I gasp as I rub my hand over my belly, a slight bump has grown since its been 3 weeks. “Everything is ok baby. They checked the baby every day, to hear the heartbeat and stuff” Trent explains as he reaches over and places his hand on top of mine.

“What happened to Melissa?” I ask, hoping she has been locked up for a while. I feel Trent stiffen beside me at the mention of her name. “She is awaiting trial, sweetheart” he tells me as he helps clear up my now finished plate of toast and teacup. “What will happen to her?” I whisper as I lay back on the pillows. “Not sure, its in the hands of the court baby” he tells me as he tucks the bed covers over my body. “You rest now. I’m going to call Aiden and the others to let them know you are awake baby. Everyone is going to be so happy” he reaches over and presses his lips on my forehead hard. “I love you” he whispers as he leaves me to rest.

I slept for a few hours, I woke to find Donna and Aiden sitting on the coach, eating muffins and drinking coffee with Trent beside them. “I hope you have left me one” I say as I try to sit up on the bed a bit. Trent rushing over to help. “Easy baby, take it easy.” He tells me as he props up the pillows. “Avery, so good to see you awake, how you feeling?” Donna asks as she comes over and gives and gentle hug. “I’m ok, I think. Still a slight headache, but the doctor said that was normal” I explain just as the door opens and the nurse from earlier approaches with a tray with my medication on it. She tells me the doctor will be round in a few more hours to check on me again and with that she leaves.

We sit and chat for a while, until Aiden says that he and Donna have to attend a business dinner. We say goodbyes and they leave promising to visit tomorrow. Trent lets out a deep sigh and gets comfy on the side of the bed. “You look like you have not slept in weeks?” I say as I caress his cheek. “I haven’t baby, I couldn’t sleep knowing you were not beside me in our bed” he leans down to press his lips to mine in the most gently way. “Well, get your butt over here and sleep. I cant have you too tired to nurse me back to health” I tell him as I shuffle over to give Trent space to lie beside me. I lift my head so I can use one of his arms as a pillow as he places his other arm around my front and pulls me closer to his body. “I have waited too long to have you in my arms, sweetheart. I really thought I lost you.” He whispers as he kisses my hair. “I’m not going anywhere, Trent. You cant get rid of me” I say as I snuggle closer to his warm chest. Silence envelopes around us and we fall asleep in each others arms.
