“Was Ada alright when you told her about Katya?” my dad asks me from the front seat of the SUV.
“She was upset but not sad,” I try to explain. “Like she was relieved, kind of. I don’t think she wanted to tell me about all of that, though.”
“That is understandable,” Peter says. “After everything we know Barrett did, I can only guess what horrible things he said to her.”
I hadn’t considered that. “The way that she spoke about him,” I begin. “It’s like she didn’t need to tell me he’s horrible, but like I was already supposed to know that. Maybe she thought because I knew he sold the baby, but it feels like there’s more. I wish I had thought to ask her then.”
