“You can shift back, kiddo,” Seth smiles at Basil as she stays curled in Carrie’s lap. “We’re all here to keep you safe.”
Basil lifts her head but lays it right back down. It’s so late, and she looks exhausted.
“She had to run some,” I admit. “I couldn’t carry her in my mouth the entire way. I tried.”
“No one would have expected you to,” Seth tells me. “You did so well, Ada. Truly.”
Carrie smiles at me. “You did!” She looks up at Seth and bows her head. For a moment, I’m reminded he’s the king. I guess I’ve gotten used to him.
