Emily’s POV
Two weeks had passed since the incident in which I discovered Jacob and Felicity's affair, and I couldn't get through the night without crying. I had known Jacob for half my life and was used to his presence. We attended the same school, grew up together, and shared memories. I wasn't expecting to lose him all of a sudden.
I was hoping he had changed his mind and would show up outside my door asking for my forgiveness. However, there was no chance for reconciliation anymore. I had to bear the pain of seeing them flirting around, as they had already made their relationship public.
It stung my pride to see people looking at me with pity in their eyes. They even assured me that the pain would pass and that I could go on with my life without Jacob. Naturally, I agreed with them. I didn't want to be depressed for the rest of my life over a jerk guy. But right now, all I wanted was peace of mind, not people constantly tapping on my shoulder for sympathy. It only made me feel even worse about myself.
It was expected that Jacob would be willing to give up everything we had for Felicity. Standing next to his new girlfriend would surely lower every woman's confidence, and she was so gorgeous that many men had fantasies about her. So, Jacob thought he had won a grand prize for having Felicity. Little did he know that what he had picked up was bronze rather than gold.
C’mon! What else did Felicity have to be proud of, aside from her looks and her hot body? She was known for her low IQ. She wouldn't have been able to pass her course without the help of her father, who served as the university’s director.
I was heading to the football field to hang out there for an hour before going home. My last class was canceled today because our professor informed us he had an urgent matter to take care of. I was a second-year journalism and mass communication student.
Felicity was one of my classmates in some subjects, but luckily I didn't have to skip class to avoid her because she was always absent. As I said, she was so well supported at our university that the professors were powerless to fail her.
Absolutely a corrupt system. But it was Felicity's loss, anyway, that she did not pay much attention to her studies. We couldn’t foresee our future. If fate were to play tricks on her, she might be wealthy today but become poor tomorrow. If that happened, she would surely be laughed at by the people she belittles.
On the other hand, I wasn’t blaming Felicity alone. Jacob would never cheat if he truly loved me, and I had no plan to win him back. Geez! He was not the only man in the world!
In fact…
"It's raining men!" I yelled at the top of my lungs, confident that no one could hear me because I was in the middle of the football field, far from the department buildings.
My eyes widened when I heard the voice behind me shouting 'Hallelujah'. But when I turned around and saw my friend, Claire, smiling broadly at me, I immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
"Amen!" we both said, laughing together.
“So, how’s your heart today? Is it still bleeding?”
I rolled my eyes at Claire. “C’mon! You know, I’m not that weak!”
“It’s okay to cry, my dear friend. Let out your heartache, I will listen.”
“I’m sorry, but I have run out of tears.” I punched her shoulder.
“Ouch!” Her face was wrinkled while touching her shoulder. “I hope you try boxing. I’m sure you will win.”
"By the way, I'd like to thank you, Tara, and Emma for being there for me when I was at my lowest."
Claire sat on the grass and took a potato chip pack from her bag, which she shared with me when I joined her.
“Don’t mind it. We are always here for-" Claire didn’t finish what she was saying as she clicked her finger as if she remembered something. “Yes! I have something to tell you!”
“What is it?”
"On Saturday, we'll have our girls' night out!”
The look of excitement on Claire's face vanished when I showed no emotion at her announcement. Didn’t they get tired of asking me to go with them for a night out? I wasn't interested in partying and having a good time in a place where everyone was drowning themselves in alcohol. As I disliked crowds, I preferred to spend my free time watching movies or reading books in my room.
“We won’t take no for an answer, Emily!” Claire exclaimed, her eyes narrowed. Her expression indicated to me that she would go to any lengths necessary, even if it meant dragging me.
“You know me very well. You can’t drag me to a place like that.”
She put her hand on my shoulder and guided me to take a look around the huge football field. “Can’t you see, Emily? The world is too big to lock yourself in a small space. C’mon! Now that you have your freedom and no strict security guard around you, why don’t you try something exciting?”
Jacob was the strict security guard Claire was referring to. My ex-boyfriend had a ton of rules to follow. He always wanted me wrapped; I wasn't allowed to wear a provocative dress. I noticed he didn't want me to do anything to enhance my beauty, particularly with makeup.
He seemed to be afraid that I might be taken away from him. Imagine how proud and confident I felt to learn that the university's heartthrob was so deeply in love with me. So, who would have thought that his feelings for me would change?
“So, have you already figured it out?” Claire pushed me gently to get my attention as she could see that I fell in deep thoughts.
“Figured what?”
“That your ex-boyfriend is actually suffocating you. Although you two may appear to be the ideal couple, your relationship with him is actually very toxic.”
“No, it is not like that. We just love each other so much."
Her eyes widened when she heard me. “Seriously? Do I need to punch you?”
"Look, Claire, even I have imposed so many restrictions on our relationship. You know how he was so protective of me because we were childhood friends before we started dating? He respects me so much.
“Emily, your ex-boyfriend is also a jerk, OK? He went to Felicity because he couldn't get what he wanted from you. Do you get it?”
I took a deep breath and nodded, “Yes, I get your point.” Ex-boyfriend…My lips curved into a bitter smile. It hadn't completely dawned on me that Jacob and I parted ways.
“Jacob is having fun with Felicity. They are partying like there’s no tomorrow. And look, what are you doing right now? Do you have a plan to be depressed forever?”
“Alright! I will go with you!”
Claire gave me a big grin. “That’s my girl! We will enjoy it!!”
“Yes! Let’s party!" I shouted.
