CHAPTER SIX

1965 Words
Emily's POV “Are you okay, Emily?” Tara asked worriedly as she parked her car in front of my house. Through her eyes, I could tell she was waiting for me to whine about my pain. Even though I tried to act like nothing had happened after a fight with Jacob, my friends could still sense the pain I was trying to hide. We all agreed to call an end to this night because our mood was already ruined and there was nothing we could do to bring back the good vibes. I didn't want my friends to be affected as much as possible, but what should I do? I could no longer act like everything was fine. We had already dropped Emma and Claire off at their home. My house was in the opposite direction, so Tara took me last. ”Tara, I’m really okay. Yes, it hurts, but this night has opened my eyes in some way because I can now clearly see Jacob's true colors.” "You're right," she nodded, "but if you need someone to talk to, I can sleep in your room tonight." She was about to unbuckle her seatbelt when I quickly stopped her. "What are you doing?” “I know you need company, Emily.” “Thank you for your concern, Tara,” I said. My face softened as I tucked the stray hair from her braids gently behind her ear. “But I know you are tired and need rest. I'm okay. I will not end my life because of that as*hole, so don't worry." I was therefore supposed to reassure her by giving her a cheery smile, but since I couldn't fool myself, a melancholy grin was instead plastered on my face. “See! You’re not okay!” she muttered. "Of course, I'm not okay, but believe me when I say that I will be fine." I uttered weakly. Tara nodded after realizing that I didn't have the energy to argue with her any longer. I drew her closer to me for a hug. She knew what this hug was for even though I didn't say anything. Without the support of my friends, how would I be able to endure this pain? They were the last people who could help me at this time, since I couldn't tell my parents about my heartaches. My family was still unaware that I had ended my relationship with Jacob. Aside from the fact that my parents treated Jacob like their own child, they were also confident that I was in the care of a good man. I didn't want them to be affected if they discovered the truth. Both sides of the family were anticipating a wedding in the future. Everything was perfect. It was almost like a fairytale with a happy ending. My dream, however, was like a sandcastle that crumbled under the weight of a strong wave. It was best to keep quiet in the meantime, because I didn't want things to get out of hand, especially if my overprotective father found out what Jacob had done to me. "I have faith in you to get through this; we are just here for you. We will find you another boyfriend, way better than Jacob!," Tara said empathically, her eyes turning into thin lines. She closed her hands as if crushing something into them. People had no idea that behind Tara's sophisticated and elegant appearance concealed a childish trait. She was also called a "playgirl" because she got into so many relationships and ended them just as quickly. It was absurd to learn that she had broken up with her boyfriend because he had arrived five minutes late for their date. Or if the guy forgot to pick her up after class or didn't buy her a chocolate bar. She was crazy, yes, but she was far from being liberated. We knew the real Tara. She was like a lost soul longing for the love and care that her parents had failed to provide for her. True happiness was not something that could be purchased with money. Maybe Tara had all the things that most people would have to work hard to get, but she was still lonely. Tara rolled down her car window after I exited. She wanted to see me enter my house, but I pinched her cheek this time. “Ouch!” “As I said, don’t worry about me. Go now.” “Alright! Alright!" she hissed. "Bye, Emily!” Even though Tara’s car had already left, I continued to wave. It took me some time staring blankly at the road before I looked up at the sky. There were no clouds forming, so I had a clear view of the bright stars and the full moon. The pleasant weather was the polar opposite of how I felt right now. What had just happened still bothered me. My mind kept returning to Jacob's words. I had no idea that, in addition to being a fantastic athlete, he was also a master of deception. I wanted to give him a standing ovation for being a genius liar. It was okay if he fell out of love with me. I would easily accept that fact. His cheating was also not an issue to me now. But my heart was about to explode from the realization that the person I admired and almost put on a pedestal was actually a jerk. My family was already sound asleep since there were no other lights on besides the lamp posts in the front yard. Thank goodness I didn't have to sneak inside just to hide my outfit. Worse, I told them I was going to spend the night studying at a classmate's house while secretly crossing my fingers. They wouldn't let me leave if I said that I was going to the bar, so I had no choice but to lie. We even had to stop at Tara's house for me to change clothes before going to bar. I took the spare key hidden under the flower pot. As soon as I entered the house, I went to the kitchen and looked in the refrigerator instead of going upstairs to my room. After getting my father's beer cans, I dashed back outside. A humiliating incident happened to me before we left the bar. I had to first drown myself in alcohol in order to fall asleep because I knew it would give me a nightmare. If my parents woke up and discovered me getting drunk, I would most certainly receive a severe scolding. It was safer to drink these beers in the park nearby. Old Wood Hill was a quiet community with a low crime rate. At this ungodly hour, people could feel safe walking around without fear of harm. Unless a gang happened to be passing through our neighborhood. However, it had been a month since a strange howl woke us up from sleep. There was a time when people gathered outside to try and locate the source of the howl but were unsuccessful. My head was spinning, and I was having trouble keeping my balance as I walked. I was quite dizzy from drinking too much at the bar. I didn’t even know how I was able to make it into the park. I chose to sit on the bench and started drinking one of the beer cans. My tongue had become somewhat accustomed to the bitter taste. I hoped that drinking would help me forget the embarrassing incident at the bar. Before leaving the bar, I decided to follow through on my words to Jacob and prove to him that I was serious about losing my virginity. Of course, I chose to seduce the most handsome man dancing at the disco bar. Fortunately, I did not fail to capture his attention. The next thing we knew, we were wildly dancing on a small stage, making us the center of attention. The crowd was cheering on us to be more daring, while my friends were trying to stop me by pulling my hands. But, because alcohol had taken over my system, I didn't hesitate to go any further. I even danced seductively in front of the handsome stranger. It was satisfying to see Jacob's angry expression while drinking his wine in the corner. Also, for the first time, I outshone Felicity. I had no idea that I would have the most humiliating night of my life. It was very foolish of me to be unaware that I was on the edge of the stage as I closed my eyes to feel the music and as my hips swayed seductively. The blinding camera flashes and the crowd's jeering laughter shattered my mind as I fell from the stage. I was sprawled on the floor with my arms and legs spread, looking like a frog with my underwear protruding from my skirt. To assist me with standing up, my friends pushed the crowd aside. They pulled me out of the bar. Although the parking lot was close to the entrance, I felt as though it was far away because I was struggling to move my legs. I couldn't even bring myself to cry. My mind was blank. As we got into the car, my friends wanted me to let it all out. Yes, I wanted to scream and let my tears fall, but I didn't know how because I couldn't get any words out of my mouth. Instead, I remained silent until my breathing returned to normal. On the other hand, they respected my silence as we drove home. The sudden howl nearly made me jump out of my skin, bringing my thoughts back. My head was thrown in the direction of the rustling noise. It terrified me when I saw two shadows moving so fast across the street. I didn't think a normal person could keep up with that pace. So what was I seeing? I blinked several times to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. But no matter how hard I squeezed my eyes shut, I couldn't figure out what the two shadows were. Every move they made was as fast as the wind. I swear they were not human! In my desperation to quickly leave this place, I threw the beer can and ran fast, leaving behind one pair of my high heels. This wasn't really my lucky night because I could hear my skirt tearing as I was running. I could see my house when someone appeared in front of me out of nowhere, causing me to scream loudly. As the lights in each house turned on, the man grabbed my two arms to keep himself from falling to the ground. His tattoos were so familiar. I recognized his face with the help of the light from the lamp post. It was the man I met in my favorite hidden place! His blood-splattered white shirt shocked me. I could tell by the volume of blood that he was badly injured. "What happened?” I asked in a trembling voice. The guy grunted and panted in response. I was about to ask him again when I started freaking out because I saw my neighbors—who had been roused by my scream—coming out of their houses. What would happen if my father saw me in this provocative torn outfit with one heel and thigh exposed? What would be the consequences? I’ll be dead! I shifted my gaze back and forth between the guy and my house. The moment my family's lights turned on in the house, indicating that they had awakened and saw the blood dripping from his body, my vision turned black. I passed out and fell to the ground.
