"Daniel?" Marlene sounded drowsy as she said my name, and I pulled her closer to me so that her back was against my chest. I had my arm around her, and my hand had moved to rest instinctively over her stomach as we slept. It made me feel better to know the baby was protected under my hand; I couldn't help thinking that it was my job to protect them both. I had enough money to give her a good start in her... their... new life, and Marlene would have everything she needed to be happy and safe. Or safe, at least... She was pregnant, and she was going to have to spend the next few months alone. She was hardly going to be happy with that.
