Chapter 6

_Alyssa's POV_ My heart pounded in my chest. I tried to calm myself down but it was no use. Logan was here, standing in my doorway, and I couldn’t think straight. My wolf, Athena, stirred restlessly within me. She could sense her mate and she felt attracted to him. It was difficult for her to resist the mate bond. But I wasn’t like her. I knew better. He had wronged us—wronged me. And I had to stay in control. Logan stood there, tall and confident, holding the bouquet of roses like he hadn’t shattered my world once before. His smile was calm, too calm for what this moment was. “Alyssa,” he said again. “I have come to see you.” Before I could respond, my mother, who was still by the door, turned to him with a questioning look. “And who are you?” she asked, her voice carrying a tone of concern. She looked between us, probably wondering why a stranger had just shown up at her doorstep with flowers for her daughter. Logan shifted his weight slightly, his smile not fading. “I’m Logan,” he said, his voice smooth and charming. “Alyssa’s mate.” The words hit me like a punch to the gut. My mother’s eyes widened in surprise as she looked back at me. “Your mate?” she repeated. She looked at me, waiting for confirmation. “Alyssa, is that true?” I couldn’t speak. My throat felt like it had closed up, and all I could do was stare at her, my lips pressed together tightly. How could I explain this? How could I tell her that, yes, he was my mate, but also the last person I wanted to see right now? I glanced at Logan, his eyes still fixed on me, waiting for me to acknowledge him. When I didn’t respond, Logan stepped forward, his voice gentle. “I saw Alyssa yesterday at the ball,” he began, addressing my mother directly. “She bumped into a waiter and spilled juice on her dress. I tried to approach her, but before I could talk to her, she disappeared. The waiter had ruined her dress, and she left before we had the chance to speak.” He paused, his eyes flickering back to me before continuing. “The moment I saw her, I knew. She is my mate. I asked around if anyone knew her, and someone named Sophia told me she was her cousin. Sophia gave me Alyssa’s address, and that’s how I came here today.” Sophia. My blood boiled at the mention of her name. Why did she have to tell him where I lived? I had tried so hard to avoid him and now she had unknowingly handed him the key right to my doorstep. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. I didn’t want to be angry at Sophia, but right now, all I could feel was rage. She had no idea what she had done. She didn’t know that Logan was dangerous, that he wasn’t the kind, charming person he appeared to be. My mother, still processing everything, turned back to me. Her eyes were filled with questions, confusion, and a hint of concern. “Alyssa, is it true?” she asked again, her voice softer this time. “Is he really your mate?” I couldn’t bring myself to speak, so I just nodded slowly. The weight of the situation pressed down on me, but I had to remain calm. Even if the situation had spiraled out of my control, I couldn’t let Logan see how much this affected me. He didn’t know that I already knew about his intentions. He didn’t know that I was aware of what would happen in the future. If I played along, I could keep him from suspecting anything. I just needed to stay composed, and when the time was right, I would get my revenge. My mother seemed to relax slightly, though she was still cautious. “Well… I suppose this is a surprise,” she said, glancing at Logan again. Logan smiled. “It’s understandable,” he said smoothly. “We haven’t had the chance to really talk yet.” I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to remain silent. Every word out of his mouth made me want to scream. But I couldn’t. I had to stay composed. Everything was still under control, even if it didn’t feel that way. Logan turned his attention back to me. “Alyssa,” he said gently, “I know this is a lot to take in. I know that we didn’t get the chance to talk yesterday, but I came here because I wanted to make things right. I wanted to explain myself.” I stared at him, my heart pounding in my chest. Did he think this was some romantic gesture? That showing up with flowers and a charming smile would make me forget everything? He didn’t know that I already knew what kind of person he truly was. He didn’t know that I had seen the future, that I had seen the devastation he would bring. But I had to play along. For now. “Thank you for the flowers,” I said, my voice steady, though it felt like every word burned in my throat. “It was thoughtful of you.” He smiled, clearly pleased that I wasn’t pushing him away. “I’m glad you like them,” he said, his tone sincere. “I didn’t want to wait any longer to see you.” My mother cleared her throat. “Well, this is quite a bit to take in,” she said, looking between us again. “Why don’t you both sit down and talk for a bit?” I tensed at the thought of sitting down with Logan, but I nodded, keeping my expression neutral. “Maybe later, Mom,” I said, offering her a small smile. “It’s still early, and I’m not sure I’m ready for all of this right now.” She frowned slightly but nodded, clearly unsure of what to make of the situation. “Alright, honey. Whatever you’re comfortable with.” Logan didn’t seem bothered by my reluctance. In fact, he seemed almost amused by it. “I understand,” he said smoothly. “I don’t want to overwhelm you. But I do want to spend time with you, Alyssa. We’re mates, after all.” I forced a tight smile. “I know,” I said, my voice calm. “We’ll talk soon.” Logan nodded. He seemed to be satisfied for the moment. “I’ll be looking forward to it,” he said, his eyes lingering on mine for a moment longer before he turned back to my mother. “Thank you for letting me stop by.” My mother, still trying to process everything, gave him a polite smile. “Of course,” she said, though I could tell she wasn’t entirely comfortable with the situation either. As Logan finally left, the door closing behind him, I let out a long breath I hadn’t realized I had been holding. My mother looked at me, her concern clear in her eyes. “Alyssa,” she said softly, “what’s going on?” I shook my head, not ready to explain everything just yet. “I need some time to think,” I whispered. “I’ll tell you later, Mom. I promise.” She nodded, though I could tell she wasn’t satisfied with that answer. “Alright. Just… take care of yourself, okay?” I nodded, trying to offer her a reassuring smile. “I will.” As soon as she left the room, I sank onto the couch, my head in my hands. This was getting more complicated than I had anticipated. But I had to stay focused. Logan didn’t know that I already knew everything. I just needed to be patient, play along, and wait for the right moment. The moment when I would take him down.
