_Alyssa's POV_ His grip on me was strong, firm, and for a moment, I couldn’t speak. I looked up, my breath catching in my throat as I took in the sight of the man who had just saved me from falling. He was tall, well-built, with broad shoulders and a lean, muscular frame. His dark hair, slightly tousled from the chase, framed a face that was strikingly handsome, with sharp cheekbones and dark eyes that seemed to pierce through me. He was so close. Too close. His face hovered just inches from mine, his breath warm against my skin, mingling with the cool night air. My heart was racing, though not from fear anymore. It was something else entirely. I was drawn to him, an unfamiliar pull I couldn’t quite explain. His scent—earthy, masculine, with a hint of something wild—intoxicated me, making it hard to focus. “You alright?” he asked. His lips were so close to mine, just a breath away. I could feel my pulse quicken, and for a brief second, I wanted to close the gap between us, to feel the warmth of his mouth on mine. But I shook the thought away, my cheeks flushing with embarrassment at how quickly I had been captivated by a stranger. I swallowed hard and nodded. “I—yes, I’m fine,” I managed to say, though my voice came out shakier than I had intended. He smiled, a slow, teasing grin that made my stomach flip. “You didn’t look fine a minute ago. You almost went over the edge there.” “I wasn’t paying attention,” I admitted. I tried to look anywhere but at his eyes, afraid of what I might do if I did. “Thank you for catching me. I…I didn’t expect anyone to be out here.” “I saw what happened back there.” He tilted his head, his gaze softening just a bit as he looked me over. “At the ball. When you ran off, I was worried something was wrong. So I followed you.” My heart sank for a moment, and I couldn’t help but glance back toward the ballroom, half expecting Logan to come charging after me. “You were at the ball?” “I was,” he said, his eyes narrowing as if he could sense my hesitation. “I saw the way you ran out, like you were being chased by something—or someone. Thought I would make sure that you were okay.” I studied him for a moment. His presence was calming, reassuring, but there was something else—something dangerous lurking beneath that calm exterior. I could sense it. He wasn’t just any man. No, this man was powerful. His aura, the way he carried himself, it all screamed strength. And then it hit me. He was a werewolf too. My heart gave a little jolt. “You’re a—” He smiled, a knowing glint in his eyes. “Like you, yeah. I guess you could say I’m a bit of an Alpha.” I blinked, unsure of what to say. My instincts screamed at me to be cautious, but the warmth in his eyes, the way his voice was so smooth, it was hard to be wary of him. “I don’t even know your name,” I said, suddenly feeling self-conscious. He chuckled softly, his dark eyes gleaming. “And yet here I am, saving you from falling off cliffs.” He reached out a hand toward me. “Damon.” I hesitated, then placed my hand in his. His touch was warm, sending a strange spark through me. “I am Alyssa.” He didn’t let go of my hand right away. His thumb brushed over the back of my hand lightly, almost absentmindedly, but the simple touch made my heart race. “I have to say, Alyssa,” he said, his voice dropping lower as he leaned in just a little closer, “you’re hard to miss. Especially when you’re running away like that. It got my attention.” My breath hitched at the way his dark eyes lingered on mine, a playful grin pulling at his lips. He was flirting, and I wasn’t entirely sure how to react to it. I hadn’t been expecting to feel this way—not after Logan, not after everything I had been through. “I didn’t mean to cause a scene,” I said softly, pulling my hand back. “I just needed to get away.” “Well, I am glad I followed. Otherwise, who knows what would’ve happened. You’ve got to be more careful, you know?” There was something about the way he said it, half-joking but with a hint of genuine concern, that made me feel warm inside. I wasn’t used to this, to someone showing such kindness without expecting something in return. “I’ll try,” I replied. “But thanks. Really. For saving me.” “You’re welcome, Alyssa,” he said, his tone gentler. “Wouldn’t want anything happening to you.” He stepped back slightly, giving me some space, though his eyes never left mine. “Look, it’s late, and I don’t feel right letting you walk back alone after everything. How about I give you a ride home?” I hesitated, my heart pounding. Part of me wanted to refuse, to keep my distance. After all, I didn’t know him, not really. And after Logan, trusting anyone—especially another man—felt dangerous. But Damon didn’t seem like Logan. His energy was different. But still, I couldn’t shake the feeling of caution that lingered in the back of my mind. “I don’t want to bother you,” I said, glancing away. “You’ve already done enough.” “You’re not bothering me,” he replied smoothly. “I would be more bothered if I let you walk off into the woods alone and something happened to you. Besides, what kind of guy would I be if I didn’t make sure you got home safe?” I looked at him, my mind racing. His offer seemed genuine, and there was something in his tone that made it hard to say no. But still, I wasn’t sure. After everything I’d been through, trusting anyone felt dangerous. “I don’t want to be a burden,” I said again, trying to keep my tone light, though my nerves were evident. “I’ll be fine, really. It’s not that far.” “Alyssa,” he said softly, stepping just a little closer. “You’re not a burden. You’re not bothering me. And I’d rather know you’re safe than leave you out here alone. Please. Let me help.” His voice was so sincere that I felt my resolve begin to waver. I still didn’t know if I could trust him, but there was something about the way he spoke to me, the way he looked at me, that made me want to believe him. Finally, I sighed, the tension leaving my body. “Alright. If you insist.” He smiled, a slow, satisfied grin that made my heart do that strange flip again. “Good. You won’t regret it.”
