So intent had Alain been in his conversation with Joby, and so concentrated had he been on reading her mind to make sure she wouldn’t double-cross him, that he had failed to notice the slight nullity that signaled the approach of telepathy interference caps. They masked their wearers’ thoughts so well that his mind had to be open and receptive to pick them up.
He turned first to glare accusingly at Joby, angry that she had somehow set him up. But he could see from her mind that she was every bit as startled and frightened as he was. This was a surprise to her, too.
