Lyssa
Emilia pulled her car into our driveway next to a vehicle that wasn’t there when we left. Both of us gave each other a confused look before getting slowly out of the car. As I walked around the car, I noticed a California license plate on it, the sight of it making my heart drop. Everyone I knew before moving here is from California, and none of them did I care to see again. Considering how today has already gone, it would be my luck if one of them were to show back up in my life now.
“Hello? Can I help you?”
Emilia’s voice pulled my attention away from the car to where she was standing on the other side of her car. Following her line of sight, my eyes landed on the figure standing in the shadows of the porch. My heart dropped even further as my sister’s voice reached my ears.
“LYSSA, OH THANK GOD.”
She came running down the stairs, gripping the railing with one hand as tightly as her fingers would allow, while the other hand held an oversized hat to her head. You know, one of those large beach hats you see rich women wear in the movies. Yeah, that was my sister holding one of those to her head, with her skin-tight barely covering her cheetah-printed outfit, and her ankle-breaking high heels that matched the rest of her clothes.
“I was sure I had the wrong house again. Did you know your phone number goes to some angry guy who yelled at me to stop calling? He was so rude, claiming the number didn’t belong to you anymore. As if you would have changed your number.”
Rolling my eyes was hard not to do, but I managed to keep it internal and not outright roll my eyes at her. Only she would think to continue to bother someone because she refuses to believe someone else would do something like change their number. On top of keeping my eye roll at a minimum, I had to suppress a burst of laughter as Emilia mouthed “what the f**k” as she continued to watch my sister “run” towards me at a surprising speed now that she was off the steps. I barely had time to react as she reached me and threw her arms around me as if she and I didn’t have issues.
“Oh god, I have missed you.”
“Yeah, well, that makes one of us.”
Getting my hands between us, I pushed her off me and took a step back. Hurt and shock filled her face.
“Lyssa?”
“Brooklyn, why….”
The sound of a motorcycle pulled my attention to the sleek black motorcycle pulling into the driveway behind Emilia’s car., as if my day needed any more drama. I mean, really, I wasn’t ready to deal with this man yet. I haven’t even gotten a chance to sit down and think about anything that happened a little bit ago. Then again, Brooklyn’s long whistle had my head snapping back in her direction, just in time to see her move her gaze slowly over Goose.
“Holy s**t, no wonder you have stayed for so long. Who is he?”
Red-hot anger burned through my whole body. In another life, I would have thought she was joking, but after everything, there was no way in hell I was going to give her the answer to her question. Then again, my mouth has a mind of its own sometimes.
“You have got to be f*****g kidding me right now. Do you ever try to go after any men I haven’t screwed?”
Turning, I ignored her shocked look as I watched Goose, who stood next to his motorcycle, looking everyone over. Crossing my arms, I cleared my throat, drawing his attention to me.
“What?”
Goose glanced at my sister quickly before looking back to me.
“I was just going to see if we could talk, but it seems like you have a guest?”
I shook my head.
“She was just leaving.”
“Um, no, I wasn’t.”
Both Goose and I looked over at my sister, who was now glaring at me.
“God, Lyssa, I haven’t seen you in something like a year, and you have been nothing but a b***h to me so far. I drove all this way and everything, getting lost so many times.”
Scoffing, I rolled my eyes for real this time.
“Are you for real right now? No, you know what, don’t answer that. I know you are. Still so self-obsessed, you probably think you never did anything wrong. And right now, I just don’t want to deal with you or whatever bullshit you brought with you.”
Stepping around her, I ignored Emilia as I passed her. I know she is going to want all the tea, but for now, she was going to have to wait. I needed a minute to myself. Though if I was being honest with myself, I wanted Goose to follow me, something I was sure wasn’t going to happen as I let my front door slam behind me. Tears blurred my vision and began streaming down my face as I dropped myself onto the couch. The anger I felt for my sister boiled over through my tears, which only made me angrier. I didn’t want to cry, but when I was this angry, I couldn’t help it.
