“She is wolf now,” I say softly, though Ellie is already asleep and can’t hear me.
I’m surprised that I can feel it. I didn’t realize what it was when I felt it with Harald, though it makes sense I would feel it since I am the one who turned him. I didn’t turn Catherine, though, yet I can still feel it. It’s the same feeling I had when Ansuz took his first breath. A new wolf being welcomed to the world.
I look at my beautiful family lying next to me. Someday, Mani will ask to be made wolf, and I do not know what I will do. I do not want her to have this pain. It is too late for this thought, so I place my hand on my wife’s hip, my arm protectively over the things I value most, and fall asleep.
