"Eh?!"
"You're kidding aren't you?" I added.
Jackson shook his head. "Why would I lie to something that is a fact," he explained. He tilted his head to face me making us stare at a close distance.
These mafia have a handsome and beautiful appearance including Jackson. He is almost the same as Charles but Jackson seems the opposite of Charles' nature, in short, Jackson has a warm and childish nature.
"You're almost like Charles," I muttered.
Jackson snorted loudly and immediately broke our gaze, he chose to look back at the sky.
"That's why there is a saying don't hate people too much. Otherwise, your child will be similar to the person you hate," Jackson said ambiguously.
"I do not understand."
Jackson sneered, shaking his head. "Women are hard to understand."
My brow furrowed. "Are you making fun of me?" I asked because I caught the sarcasm in his words.
"Do you think?"
I looked away, slightly annoyed by his words. However, upon further thought, Jackson's parents indirectly hated Charles, was that so?
Jackson's fingers shot up in the air again, this time I think he made a flower shape.
"Flower?" I asked.
"Yep, right!" he replied cheerfully.
To be honest, this is the first time I have found a man who looks mature but is actually like a child, in contrast to his image which is a thousand percent mature.
"What time is it, Jackson?" I asked.
Jackson seemed to take an old watch from the pocket of his jeans. He gave it to me. This thing is very antique and looks luxurious at the same time.
"I got it when I killed that arrogant old geezer," he said causing me to quickly throw the watch at him.
I immediately woke up from my bed. "You killed an old geezer for the watch? Are you kidding me?"
Jackson also rose from lying down, he took the watch that was thrown beside his body and looked at the watch closely.
"If I don't kill him, he will kill me. That's Rosie, life, kill or be killed," he explained which left me gaping in disbelief.
And I don't agree with what he said. "Then why should there be violence when there is a good way to go?"
Jackson chuckled "That's the difference between normal humans and mafia. We have different rules, where if we want to reach the top of the food chain then we have to be savage and s*******r everyone at the bottom."
"We also have a good way, by being our subordinates," he continued.
I also shrugged my shoulders, not really understanding this kind of conversation, because my life was never as complicated as theirs before. If one could say right now was the time when my complicated life began.
"I don't know, I don't understand," I said to end this conversation.
I stood, looking at the sun which is now scorching. It was time for me to go back into the house and listen to Charles' explanation of David.
"Me first, the sun has started to sting," I said goodbye to Jackson who didn't respond to me at all.
I also didn't care and tried to get out of this maze which turned out to take a long time. My stomach was struggling to eat and my eyes were swollen from crying earlier.
Unsteadily, I entered the castle and found everyone sitting and standing anxiously in the large room as the place they called the 'gathering'.
Daniel who looked at me first, after that he ran to me and hugged me worried. "Are you okay, Rosie?! Where have you been huh!?" he asked frantically.
Because of Daniel words earlier, we are now the center of attention and everyone is coming to us or rather me.
"Where have you been, Rosie?! We're worried about you," Adam said with wide eyes.
"I-I'm from the backyard," I answered fearfully.
Everyone now breathes a sigh of relief, I don't know what the relief is for. I'm just looking at them confused at this point.
"Rosie!" The sharp, heavy voice seemed to pierce me.
Charles, the owner of the voice approached me with an angry look. I should be the one angry not him!
Plak!
The slap hit my cheek. The former slap warmed me making me hold my cheek which now feels buzzing and trembling.
I'm at a loss for words, really! What was on this man mind that he dared to slap me?
"Why did you slap me?!" I asked furiously. And it seems like everyone wants to know that too.
Charles didn't answer, he grabbed my wrist roughly, almost making me cry. This is the true character of Charles that I just discovered.
"let me go!" I struggled and grabbed my wrist which was starting to turn red.
"This hurts Charles," I mumbled, and my eyes filled with tears.
Charles didn't let go of my hand, he even held it tighter to make my blood flow stop.
"Stop Charles!" Danial snapped and he let go of my hand from Charles.
Danial made himself a shield for me to take cover behind him. Ah! my eyes blurred by these tears and my cheeks started to throb, so painful.
"You don't have to be like that!" Danial snarled at Charles which only made him angrier, it seemed.
Charles pushed Danial shoulder, "Mind your own business!" Charles hissed and he looked at me making me look away.
"Come here, Rosie!" Charles ordered with an emphasis I would certainly not obey. It's the same as getting into a crocodile hole.
"Not!" I answered loudly.
Danial is still loyal to be my shield from Charles anger.
Charles eyes began to darken indicating he was about to go berserk, I was very afraid of him.
"Come here or your brother will die by my hands," his threats made my heart barely beat.
Everyone was upset about what Charles had just said, as if they didn't expect Charles to take my brother as his prisoner.
Adam was now starting to come forward and grabbed Charles by the shoulders trying to calm him down by whispering something I couldn't hear.
Charles yanked Adam hand off his shoulder. His mind seemed to be clouded by a fog that he didn't even want to listen to his leader.
"I just want my wife!" growled Charles.
Charles looked back at me. "Rosie, let's go home," he said in a soft voice.
For some reason hearing his soft voice made me even more scared. I shook my head at him in response.
"No! We have to go home, now! So come here, Rosie," Charles insisted.
"He's chosen to stay with Charles, stop forcing him."
"Shut up Danial, I have nothing to do with you. She is my wife!" snapped Charles.
Everyone was now looking at me, waiting for me to give Charles an answer. But sadly my answer is still no, because I'd rather be here than at home, at least here is Danial who will be my shield if Charles gets angry.
"Charles, can we just stay here. I hate being alone in that mansion," I pleaded softly, hoping it would melt his heart.
"No! I won't let you run away again like before."
I nodded slowly. "No Charles, if I run away there's no way I'll come back here. I was just in the back garden and got lost in the maze," I reassured him.
"That's right Charles, there's no way he can escape from this place anyway. Our castle is in the middle of the forest," said Adam, who helped me reassure Charles.
Charles rubbed his face roughly, then he sat on the arm of the sofa. "Okay, but don't think you can escape, Rosie!" Charles threatened, making me nod quickly.
"Come here now," said Charles.
Honestly, I didn't want to because that slap had traumatized me being close to him.
"You didn't mean to slap me again?" I asked doubtfully.
Charles eyes widened in surprise.
"You all can go back to your rooms, except Rosie," Charles ordered and for some reason they complied.
Finally all gone. Actually Danial was reluctant to leave me but Charles gaze made him give up and finally left. Now we live alone in this big room. Charles advanced towards me making me back away from him. I'm afraid he will do what I'm afraid of.
Seeing me back Charles put on a disappointed look on his face, "Come here honey," he called and I was too scared to even approach him.
Charles came back to me, making me keep backing away and finally I couldn't go anywhere else because my back had hit the wall.
Now, Charles was in front of me. His gaze dimmed. He raised his hand making me close my eyes in fear.
In fact I didn't feel any pain, it was just that I was wrapped in something warm and comfortable. I opened my eyes slowly. Turns out Charles hugged me. I just stayed in his arms even to breathe it didn't feel brave.
"I'm sorry for slapping you," he said, surprising me.
"I'm afraid you'll go and disappear for good," he continued again in a low voice that flowed from his lips.
"I'm sorry Rosie, I'll try not to hurt you again."
I nodded in his arms. "I forgive you Charles," I replied. After that I returned his hug to make him comfortable or I could say that I was comfortable in his arms.
