“Hawk!” I exclaim loudly, hoping Wade will hear me and not come out. Hawk seeing Wade would be a disaster. Not only is he dad’s robot righthand man, the feud between us the W-pack is personal to him. His wife was killed by Wade’s uncle.
He looks suspiciously at me. “Why are you spooked, Princess?”
I swallow my saliva and try to think on my feet. I can’t believe that I am about to save Wade. Well, he saved me too. We can be even.
“You startled me. What are you doing here?”
“You were not inside,” he responds with his usual emotionally detached one-liner.
“I told you to come back after the party. Are you are spying on me?” I accuse and look suspiciously at him.
“I am doing my job,” he says with the same expressionless face.
“Does that include invading my privacy?” I press on and fold my arms across my chest. “Here you are near the woman’s bathrooms,” I add and see his expression turn from stoic to surprise.
He knows how protective my Dad can be. Any questionable behaviour on his part can get him eliminated.
“I was just checking on you. I will go,” he says quickly and turns away.
“No need. I don’t feel like attending the party anymore. Let’s go home.”
He studies me for a moment before nodding. Whew! That was close.
I have just gotten into bed when I receive a private call.
“Got home safe?”
My heart flutters at hearing his voice. Something is wrong with me.
“Why are you doing this, Wade?”
“Calling my woman?”
“I am not your woman. Why did you warn me about the chef?”
He laughs and I am irritated with myself for smiling.
“I have fallen for you, Lira.”
“You can’t!” I cry out, shocked. He knows how dangerous this is for both of us.
“Tell my heart that. Maybe you will succeed, because I have failed. I can’t keep this inside anymore.”
I don’t even know how to respond to this.
“Lira,” he calls on to me.
“You can’t just drop this on me, Wade. How do I know this is your way of getting to me or earning my trust so you could lead me into an ambush?”
“You don’t believe me.”
I can hear the disappointment in his voice, but he can’t blame me. I don’t even know if that is all an act.
“It is hard for me to.”
Surely he must know how hard believing him will be for me.
“If our packs were not rivals, would you believe me, Lira?”
“I don’t know, Wade,” I respond in earnest.
“Can you forget my last name for a day and let me prove myself?”
“This is a dangerous game, Wade.”
“Don’t I know it? Don’t you think I have tried to suppress this?”
“Please stop calling me,” I say and drop the call.
I don’t know why I did that, but everything about him scares me now. A few days ago I was convinced that I hated him, but now I am a confused mess. I kissed him back twice and I can’t stop think about it.
I decide to stay away from school until I have my head in the right place. Convincing my parents that I have a headache is easy. The difficult part is ignoring Wade’s calls.
Three days later, I can no longer pretend to be sick because Hawk is being so dramatic. He has googled everything that could be wrong with me and convinced Dad to get a neurologist and neurosurgeon because doctor google said I could have a brain tumour.
I am walking to my classroom when I get pulled to one of the locker rooms.
“You have been ignoring my calls,” he accuses and traps me between himself and the wall.
“ You should not be calling me,” I remind him a fact he seems to ignore.
“You are in denial. It is not going to change how we feel about each other, Lira.”
I look at him in disbelief. “We? I don’t have feelings for you!”
He is jumping the boat now. He chuckles and reveals his irritatingly perfect set of teeth.
“Oh, really? Let’s test that, shall we?” he says and covers my lips with his.
I know that I should push him away because he is proving a point, but I can’t. My heart just melts with his every touch. Like a spell, I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him back.
He breaks off the kiss and chuckles.
“Exactly!” he beams as if this is a good thing.
“You need to stop being in denial, then we can deal with this.”
I let out a sigh, defeated.
“We can’t deal with this, Wade. Don’t you know what is at stake?”
“I love you, Lira.”
“What?” I ask, shocked.
He has said a lot of things to me, but this is the first.
“You heard me. I don’t plan on staying away from you. You either work with me on this or we will be caught.”
“Wow, turning to manipulation now. Such a gentleman!” I sneer while he wraps his arms around my waist and places his forehead against mine. He is so close I can feel his heart beating against mine.
“I am terrified of this too, Lira, but I can’t bottle my feeling inside anymore. My pack and the H-pack have collaborated and plan to wipe all of you out. I can’t lose you.”
“Wade,” I call to him. This thing between us is doomed before it even starts and he knows it.
“I know. I am betraying my blood by telling you this. I don’t think I can stop the attack on your pack. The best I can do is warn you when danger lingers your way. Please answer my calls because I can’t lose you,” he pleads and I completely melt.
“Why did you not just tell me how you felt instead of being an ass?” I inquire because he has been mean to me since first grade.
“I was in denial. Can we start over?” he asks with cute pleading eyes while I roll my eyes. He must know how hot he is.
“Fine. What have you got?”
He chuckles, makes eye contact before lifting my chin up with his finger, forcing me to look at him.
“Hey, Gorgeous. I am Wade and I am absolutely crazy about you.”
“Too cheesy,” I tease, my cheeks burning. I can’t believe that I am blushing because of Wade.
“Come on, Babe. Don’t be so hard on me. I have never had to state my case to a woman before,” he pleads and blushes his lips over mine.
“Yeah right,” I roll my eyes at him. He has hooked up with almost every cheer leader in the school.
“I am serious, Lira. They just landed on my lap. You are very hard to please,” he declares while I roll my eyes again.
“Well, your proposal needs a lot of work. I am not convinced that you even mean it.”
“Oh, come on! Sasha would have dropped her panties by now,” he complains, his words getting to me. Most girls here would have dropped their panties for him before he said a word. I hate that he even compares me to them.
“You are right. That is why we can’t be anything you and I.”
Even if Wade was not from W-pack, he is too much of a player for me.
“You are jealous,” he accuses with a grin. Now I want to slap him.
“I am not. Thanks for saving me, but it is best that we stay away from each other,” I say, pushing him away and heading out. His next words catch me off guard.
“I am sorry.”
I turn to look at him. I have fought with him so many times. Wade does not know how to apologise as far as I know.
“That was disrespectful. I should not have brought up Sasha or any other woman for that matter. I only hooked up with them to get over you. It did not work. Babe, please just hear me out,” he pleads, taking me back to where we were before Sasha came up.
“Wade,” I call to him, defeated.
“It’s you, Lira. It’s always been you. Give me a chance to prove myself,” he continues to plead. I wish I can turn him down and never look back. That is safer for both of us, but I can’t.
“Let me think about this,” I finally concede.
“Okay, but don’t ignore my calls,” he negotiates and flashes me his breathtaking smile.
