Emilia woke up with the feeling of dread sitting like a ball in her stomach. She couldn't shake it the entire day. Her and Blair went shopping, got their nails and hair did, and when she was coming back, a cold feeling went down her spine. Walking into her dorm room, Emilia didn't even fake enthusiasm seeing her family waiting for her. Instead her heart fell into her stomach and she grimaced when she saw them.
Julian and Ricardo had both raided her fridge for food, Roberto was stretched out in her chair, and her parents were sitting on her couch. Walking in slowly Emilia whispered, "Um...hi." Pamela got up and embraced her daughter before pulling her back at arms distance to observe her. "You look a bit thin, are you eating enough?" Emilia nodded and then asked dumbly, "Um why are you all here...in Ireland?" Ernesto stood, "Well we came to see if you were done with this nonsense."
Emilia looked to her father confused, "Nonsense? You mean school?" Roberto yawned, "He was trying to see if he could force you into coming home now that you've rebelled." Emilia looked at her older brother before looking to her father, "No, I'm happy here and I'm not coming home. I could have saved you all a trip if you'd called first."
Ernesto glared at his daughter, "You're testing my patience girl!"
Emilia groaned, "Why because I'm not interested in doing what you want? Well here's a news flash father I'm an adult, I'm not obligated to do anything you want!" Ernesto got pissed then. "Obligated? Little girl I starved so you could eat, I bought the clothes you wore, the shoes you put on your feet. I saved and sacrificed more than you could imagine so that you could have it all! And you tell me what you're obligated to do?!"
Emilia rolled her eyes refusing to be guilted, "So I could have all of what? A life inside a house with no one but you! Forced to marry some guy you approved of!"
Ernesto scowled at his daughter before he turned to his wife, "Talk to her!"
Pamela flinched but pulled her daughter to the side, "Darling, since you been here you've changed and while we're happy you got this opportunity I just think you come on home with us. I mean you got what you wanted now come on home and we can get you enrolled in online classes."
Emilia looked at her mother dumbfounded, "You want me to give up Dublin, Ireland, so that I can go to school online? Be trapped in a house where I have no say so over MY life?" Pamela looked at her daughter without knowing how to respond.
Emilia pulled from her mother, "God I need a drink." Emilia grabbed her bottle of scotch from the mini bar and poured herself to glass. Fixing one for Roberto when he asked with his eyes for one. Ernesto watched his daughter with critical eyes and she turned to him. "Papa I would have saved you flight miles and money if you'd had called, but I'm not going anywhere."
Ernesto sneered at his daughter, "Why? You spread your legs for one of this Irish punks? He the reason why you don't want to be bothered with your own family?" Emilia felt her temper flare, "Why is that the first thing you jumped to?" Ernesto scoffed, "I may be old girl but I'm not dumb! You've been doing something out here you wouldn't dare do at home and now you think you can talk to me any kind of way!" Emilia killed her glass before topping herself off.
Ernesto watched his daughter nurse her second drink and looked down at his phone. Turning to his wife who looked at him nervously he sighed and said, "Javier is here." Emilia turned to him confused, "Huh? Why?" Ernesto scowled at her, "Because he's in love with you and he wants to marry you. So you will accept his proposal when he comes up here or I will disown you girl!"
And then Javier walked in. He smugly walked into the room reeking of Gucci Sport and walked to Emilia confidently. He got on one knee and asked her loud and proud to be his and marry him. But Emilia saw through the asshole and his smarmy ass proposal.
Looking from her expecting father, to her desperate mother, to her curious brothers, Emilia looked back at Javier and confidently announced, "I'd rather jump through a helicopter propeller." Javier had stared at her shocked before getting up and snarling, "I can do better and hotter. Your virgin ass isn't worth this f*****g headache." He then stormed out with a side note for Ernesto to not call him again.
Ernesto pleaded for Javier to wait but he was gone. Ernesto turned to his daughter and boomed, "Do you realize what you just gave up? He's a doctor and-." Emilia filled in the blank eagerly, "A womanizing, douchebag who will be testing himself for STD's more than actual patients."
Ernesto looked at his daughter disgusted, "Who are you? You are not the little girl I raised!"
Emilia slowly nodded, "I know."
Walking to her father she looked him over, "I am far from it papa." Walking away Emilia started to go to her room but Ernesto said it then, "You will no longer be family if you continue this! You have broken your mother's heart with leaving and now you've dismissed the opportunity-." Emilia sniffled feeling the tears about to come, "What papa? To be Javier's house wife? To never lift a finger as he does all the work meanwhile I knowingly sit back while he f***s around on me? Why don't you have any faith in me?"
Ernesto looked at his daughter confused, "I am the best student. I make all A's and I barely try anymore. I was perfect in everything but you never trusted me to make any choices. You smothered and dictacted everything that I did until I couldn't tell what I wanted from what you wanted!" Ernesto tried to fight the truth but it all came pouring out of her, "I hated my life papa, all I had was my family. I had no one else, and I was alone surrounded by the people who were supposed to love me!"
Roberto pipped up then, "Whoa hold on kid, we do love you. We just want what's best for you!" Emilia turned to him, "Oh really? So leaving me in a house with no one but our tyrant father and passive mother was best for me? I lived my entire life on lock down while you all went out to enjoy your lives! I was stuck in that house for years and instead of saying anything you all just added on to it! "Keep her inside dad" "Don't let her do this" "She's too young for that". You did nothing while I starved for any connection to anyone other than Marisol and mom."
Ernesto gruffily added, "Javier-." Emilia screamed, "I'm so sick and tired of hearing about that over dressed man w***e! Papa I get it, you see him as a younger more successful you, and I'm so sorry I'm not okay with settling for some half ass marriage. I want to choose who I be with, I want to get married for love. Which I know is so pathetic for you to hear, but after everything you've taken from me, I deserve a choice in who I marry."
Pamela sniffled feeling overwhelmed, "Darling, please calm down."
Emilia shook her head, "Quit telling me what to do! God do you all not realize how much you made me second guess everything! How you made me feel so idiotic and useless!" Ernesto shook his head slowly, "Baby girl...we never wanted you to feel that way..." Emilia laughed mockingly, "Really father? The man who told me the only thing I was good for was cooking and settling? The man who was so sure I'd be somewhere in alley going through withdrawal right now? You destroyed my self esteem, you made me hate everything about myself until all I wanted was to just kill myself! You controlled, dominated, and bullied me into every decision until this one! And now low and behold here you are trying to bully me back!"
Ernesto stuttered out stupidly, "Y-your mother is so sad-." Emilia rolled her eyes, "My mother is sad, because to fill her void of an unsatisfying marriage she put all her energy and time into me. Now she has nothing but you! My mother is so miserable because she's trapped all damn day in the house with you! A void, emotionless monster who does nothing for her but take and take until there is nothing left. Face it Ernesto you are the down fall of this family!"
Ernesto was offended then, "I have done everything for this family!" Emilia nodded, "You are right. You have caused every dumb and reckless thing your son's have done to forget your voice in the back of their minds saying "You're not good enough!". You have taken a woman some used to call fiery and passionate into a submissive house maid!"
Ernesto watched as his daughter began to undo her bracelets, "And worst of all you have driven your daughter who used to feel so ugly, so stupid, so worthless, that she cut herself and then ran to another country just to get away from YOU." Emilia showed her father and bothers her wrist and watched them pale. "I was so alone, all the time. I always had to deal with you putting me down and making me feel like less than what I am. I haven't cut since I got here Ernesto, but the moment I saw you I wanted to."
Ernesto looked at his daughter hurt and watched her smile at him bitterly, "You were right, you have done everything to this family. But I am done letting you do it to me father. Now get out."
