Louise POV
I hate this feeling of helplessness. I check my phone, trying to see if I have messages and calls but nothing. As for Axel, what’s taking him so long?
I look outside and paces again. I hope this won’t blow up. I have a race to get too. I need that championship! I stamp my feet, damn, If I know this will happen to me... I would have crippled that man.
It was all his fault!
I huddle at the corner and check the news, thank God, me being in jail isn’t in it yet. But I doubt it will last for long. I bite my lips and decides to call my assistant.
“Where are you?” I ask her as soon as she answers.
I can hear the blaring sounds of music from the background. Looks like she’s having fun and I’m here, freaking out!
“I’m with my friends, Louise!” I can barely hear her.
“Having fun!? I’m in a freaking jail!” I shout at her, and there’s no response. I can hear what seems to be a shout and a few curse words. “Don’t you curse me!”
“No, I’m not! I was just so surprised!” Finally, there’s the silence, and I can hear her properly. “What happened that you got yourself landed in jail?”
“I beat up a senator’s son,” I answer to her.
“s**t! That’s hardcore! A senator’s son? Are they pressing charges?” Lea asks me. She’s like a friend to me. Not much of an assistant but a confidante.
“Why do you think I’m in jail?” I ask her as I roll my eyes. “Isn’t it obvious?”
“Damn!” Lea curses again. “I’m coming. Did you call your parents? Do you know how detrimental this is for your championship, right? And did you forgot the ambassadorship for the women empowerment?”
“That’s why I need you here! Two heads are better than one! And you know I can’t call my parent’s, right? My mother’s still livid because I didn’t go to finishing school. And my father’s angry because I didn’t work for him after graduating, you know that only a few people know of my racing career, right?”
“I know,” Lea sighs. “But they need to know, right? What if it explodes on the news?” Lea asks me again.
“I don’t know,” I say to her. Knowing my mother, she might just disown me.
“You know very well that you’re newsworthy, right? Not to mention the senator’s son, you’re the heiress to the Archer fortune. Your mother was the top model when she had you, and your father is the CEO of a billion-dollar company. What do you think?”
“Lea, don’t make things worse, will you? I’m trying to think here,” I say to her. “I called Axel.”
There’s a pregnant silence over the line until Lea sighs.
“You’re aware that you’re getting dependent on him, are you? What will you do if he breaks the engagement?” Lea says to me. “He’ll never have anything to do with you.”
I frown.
“Shut up! If he breaks the engagement, then, fine. I’ll be happy. You might not know, I might be the first to break it,” I say to her. But deep down in my heart, I dread this thing. It feels like sooner or later, something like this will happen.
“Really?” Lea sounds disbelieving. “Anyway, bye.”
I sigh and stretch my legs. f**k, it’s cramp! I slowly pull it, trying to find a comfortable position. I close my eyes, trying to calm my racing heart. Our talk has placed so many thoughts in my mind.
So many what-ifs. I don’t know what I’ll do if Axel... finds someone. I hug my legs and decides to not think about it. But the question has been placed in my heart. I doze off to sleep.
“Louise... Louise...” Someone’s shaking my shoulders. My neck hurts, I stretch it and look up. It’s Axel! He’s here. He didn’t fail me.
I smile at him. Axel’s the only one I can trust to run to me every time I need him.
“I knew you’d come,” I jump on him. His body feels warmth, chasing the cold away. He smells nice too. I miss this man. It has been six months since I’ve seen him.
I miss his voice, his laughter, in fact, everything about him. Every time I come home, I always find reasons for Axel to come see me. Sometimes, I purposely get into trouble so that he’ll come.
It’s pathetic, right? I keep telling him that I hate him, but the truth is, I love him. I don’t remember when maybe it was when he saved me from drowning. Or that time when he took a hit for me.
I don’t remember but all my life, he’s the only man that has entered my heart. I’ve traveled the world, but I always come home to Axel’s arms. He feels like home. His arms are the place where I can be who I am.
“Axel,” I whisper in his ears. He continues to carry me. I hook my legs tighter around his hips while we pass by police officials.
“Don’t talk,” I can hear the anger in his voice. “We’re going to talk inside the car and not here.”
I tense. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean for this to happen. I was just having fun.”
“I said don’t speak,” Axel grits his teeth. “Why are you so light? Aren’t you eating properly? What have you been doing?”
“I... I’m traveling,” I say to him.
“It doesn’t mean that you have to starve yourself! Do you still have money?” He asks me in a low voice. Axel thinks that I’m no good, and I have no means to support myself. I frown. There are times that I want to tell him that I’m not a good-for-nothing, but he won’t see the need to contact me.
I won’t be able to talk to him. Pathetic, right?
“Sir, sir, sir...” A police officer comes running after us. “Please, sir.”
“If it’s about the charges, talk to me. No need to disturb my client,” Lawyer Smith stops the officer. “Anything that has to do with my client, I’ll take care of it.”
“Louise, Louise... what to do!?” Lea comes toward me, running. She’s in a panic. “Hi, Axel. Louise, there are so many reporters outside. What to do?”
“Don’t worry, I’ll deal with them. Just cover your face,” Axel says to me. My hold on him tightens while Lea arranges my hair. “Let’s do this.”
